These sticks, instead "l being whips, approach nearly to the oinn ns"!is of clubs, adapted to beating and t ru-ting rather than whipping, and their we:e|;i, and the force with which they are ppde.l, are such us to cause a bloodshot or gangrene condition of the llcsh. These im plemeiitji are u>al on repeated occasions to f> rec the frightened beasts into and out of the ear-, yards, lanes, wcigh-scales, and in divi ding them into lots to suit purchasers. Tim persons conducting these operations, intent on their purpose, are not sparing ::s t ? the freiiueney and weight of their blows or eneryv of their thrusts. The poor beast, m addition to tiie pain he sutlers by the first inllietion of blows, is made the more sore and sensitive by each successive beating, until the pain resulting' from the aceumu l.iti <1 bruises and soreness mint be intense and cruel in the extreme. In addition to tiii- the cattle are so thickly j Kicked into the ?virs as to barely leave standing room. The sujl'oeatiug elleet of this is such as to he highly detrimental to health even in tem perate weather, and how much more i- their d.M'oinfort when so arranged during sutuiner I'eat. In this condition they are swayed heavily wnn-t ??aeh other and against the sides of the ? o's. by the oscillations incident to rapid rail ' el travel. In addition to the bruises and v< mod- received is the constant strain upon t '??? nerves. The cattle are moreover sub jected to great privations for want of food, Wit?T, a,ud rest, (loaded to frenzy by this initiation of ids, they light and hook each 1 f ?f. and thus add to their sad condition. \nd what i- their condition on arriving in Baltimore * Famishing from want of food,1 v> t:.-r, and rest, bruised, sore, weak, and ' 'but, decidedly unwell, with shrunken ear ? debilitated nervous systems, deranged er^ans and functions of life, and in a very '?'i'-ti d Mate of \ itality, little, if any thing, short of diseased. lint their abuse does not *?' ? j? here. Our instincts revolt at the ?U e lib^t, and medical science confirms the decision prompted by intuition. Another of the occurrences resulting from the practices here cited is the following: here rattle are to be weighed to the pur chaser w bile ullve, the purchaser selects those w Inch Wi 11 yield him the greatest weight of saleable material in proportion to the gross weight of the animal. The result of this is that lank and piunt animals are selected in preference to t hose w hich have partaken more plentifully of tood ami water. . A moment's reflection will show that lhe?e are precisely the animal- that have sntiered most from the hard treatment reeelvcdduring1 their journey to liaitimmv, and hence arc the least heaiihy of the lot frout which they are selected. The rejected animals were probably, before ?t trtingon their journey, the strong, henJiby. m ister steers of the herd; liave fought their way better as a aim! their weaker neighbors in the ear- and through other hardships, and consequent'y arrived in the sale yards in a less debilitated condition, with appetites whieh induce their tilling themselves with food and water to a greater cxb lit than the mere debilitated and worn- >ut of their herd.
