We esteem good sense and we love vanity we do for the person we love more than for the person we esteem. Excess of ceremony was always tbe companion of weak minds it is a plant that will never grow in strong soil. Courtage is evinced in words as much as in deeds, and in acts of omission not less than those of com mission. It is a great defect not to know how to make the most of our quali ties but what a great quality to know how to make the most of our defects No life can be well ended that has not been well spent and what life has been well spent that has bad no purpose, that has accomplished no object, that has realized no hopes? Nature can do much to render a a countenance attractive, but char acter accomplishes far more. The beauty which is of feature merely catches the careless, wandering eye. The beauty which is the reflex of character holds the eye, and eventu ally wins the heart. The hero who saves life does not catch the vulgar fancy like the hero who destroys it. Human sheep admire the butcher and cljant his glory. Comparatively few know a hero when they see him, or even suspect that the loftiest deeds of true heroism are wrought around them every day. There are three wicks to the lamp of a man's life—brain, blood and breath. Press the brain a little, its light goes out, followed by both the others. Stop the heart a minute, and out go all three of the wicks. Choke the air out of the lungs, and presently the fluid ceases to supply the other centres of flame, and all is soon stagnation, cold, and dark ness There is a great deal of virtue, in the five W's. Don't be ashamed' to ask Why? or When? or Who? or Which? It fras the philosopher Locke who, wlien he was asked how he had contrived to accumulate a mine of knowledge so rich, yet so extensive and deep, replied that he attributed what little he knew to not having been ashamed to ask for information, and to the rule he had laid down, of conversing with all sorts of men on those topics chiefly that formed their own peculiar pro fession or pursuit.
