She has a population of 600,000 as bright, in telligent and refined people as can be found in any of the eastern states. Could the eastern states re alize this, were they fully acquain ted With our surroundings and the development of the territory, the so lution of the problem would come quickly. With a population of 600, 000 we must have a large number of children needing proper educa tional facilities which they cannot obtain under a territorial form of government, %nd this alone should insure admission, While we have five nublic. institutions of learning, built and supported at great expense by the territory, and many other public schools of a local nature, yet in our territorial condition we are deprived of many facilities which we would have as a state/' NULLIFICATION MEETING. Seely's Office Exchange, March 9th, 1888—Meeting called to order by Chas. DainStfel who stated the pur poses for ftt'iich meeting was called, and who hoiittihated John Nelson to act as ch&irtaian of .the meeting, motion wife seconded and Mr. Nel son was elected to preside. Motion made, seebnded and carried that C. N. Wood act as secretary for the meeting. Meeting asked as to their pleasure as to what should be done, by the chairman, and on the request of.Beyeral the call for the meeting was read by the secretary together with the names subscribed to same. AJtter reading of the call, motion made by Dr. Reno that the chair ap point a committee of five to draft resolutions embodying the senti ment of the citizens, present as to the action taken by the city council in regard to electric light plant for this city, at their meeting Monday evening last. Motion was seconded bttt^bpfore being put to a vote it Was suggested that it might be well to hear fifom some present, bearing on the subject Dr Swaine was called for who responded and in quite a lengthy ta% gave his views on the subject of lights for the city, the action taken by thfeoity council, the reasons that led ti&same, etc. Commissioners Hanly, /Lawrence and Albrecht were present and be ing called out gave thejf reasons for voting as they did Messrs. Damerei,/" McCumber and Lauder were caDRed on and made re marks. They, did not qnestion the honor or integrity of the members of the city''council but thought this action somewhat hasty, ill advised and extravagant when taking into consideration our present heavy burden of taxation. They thought more time should have been taken for discussion pf the subject and for getting the views and expression of the people who have the bills to foot and the taxes to pay. Mr. Lauder in particular, was opposed to all things in the .nature of sub sidies, or the giving away Without any consideration of valuable fran chises. Both Mr. McCumbcr and Mr. Lauder were inclined to think the council had entered into a con tract which was not legally bindihg Qh the city and Which could be an nulled by proper action. Mr. John son made a motion that.the meeting pais a resolution of itpproval or oommendation of our c|ty council in their actioii, taken last Monday eVeniag? the motion was ruled out of order by the chairman. After some further discission by various gentlemen the.f6llowing resolutions were introduced by Mr. Damerei and were carried by a vote of the meeting 1st. It is the opinion of this meet ing that the city council have acted unwisely and hasty by makipg a contract: wth the'Electric Light Co. whereby the property of our tax payers Will be assessed for the space pf twenty*one years. 2nd.
