Mellette brs been at Indian apolis since' election bothering President-elect Harrison about the Dakota question, and being unable to persuade 1ilm to make any rash ^promises, now gives out that the general is ho fool, but that he thinks fr Dakota's future was never so bright as it is now. Those meddlesome and 'impudent south Dakota "State" officers make a man tired. Mr. Donnelly was defeated for representative by 34 votes of which fact the local paper, The Tribune, Ijsays: "Mr. Donnelly was beaten simply because he dared go out into the state and advocate the election of Mr.Merriam as governor. Had he stayed at home and made an active canvass in his own behalf he would have been elected but he sacrificed himself to save the state ticket, and it is beyond a question that his efforts did save it. And while he was doing this, alleged Republicans at home were stabbing him in the back." Grovert New Job. WASHINGTON, NOV. 16.—The latest effort of political gossips to dispose of President Cleveland's future was made public yesterday by the publication of a story to the effect that Senator Gorman's fre quent visits to the White House since the election were for the pur pose of inducing President Cleve land to become president of the B. & O. railroad after March 4. The story as published says Mr. Cleve land has accepted, and that a meet ing of directors will be held Dec. 15, when the President will be formally chosen. It is Adjutant General Harden. Bismark Tribune: Governor Church has appointed J. W. Harden, the democratic candidate for con gress, to the office of adjutant gen eral of the territorial milita. This is a recognition of Mr. Harden which will be appreciated ly the democrats who know how faithfully he carried the banner of democracy against overwhelming and certain defeate. General Harden succeeds General Jenkins who recently dierl in New York. The new adjutant general is a veteran of the late war, having served under Sheriden dur ing that great commander's inteest mg campaign. H. L.
