Nov. 19. Amaze ment and disgust have been ex pressed on every side since the extraordinary spectacle pro-i scnted by tne rioting women at the Ko:burghe-Goelet wed ding. Representative women has tened tb condemn the acts of their sisters as un-American, as well as unwomanly, and to repuciate in behalf of. New New York womanucod the fran tic display. Following are a few exprc3 sions of opinion obtained in in terviews with well-known men and women: Mrs. Francis Hodgson Burnett. "That such morbid curiosity should have actuated so great a crowd as that which made tho wedding of iuesuay a marked event ta of itself astounding and perplexing, especiallv in view of the fact that the great majority are described as being respectable, w e 1-dressed wo men. What finally suggested it self to me is tnat, poking back upon the history of all great mobs in fact, all up hea vels, such, for instance, as the French xevolution the mobs seem to become hysterical and lose all reason." Mrs. Puss "age. "I did not auenc the Roxburghe-Goelet wedding, nor have I read the accounts of it to any extent, but I am told that women lay oo - lu thp pews, hid In the c- cellars and. did otner uuheard-cf things It Is a sign of degeu eracy in a general way. "Such a spectacle as wa presentee by the women at hi wedaing would not occur abroad. They are impossible women, and, like those who will take flowers from funeral emblems, have no respect for the sanctity of the occasion. "No, I certainly do not con sider them representative American women." Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst. "I call the rowdy actions of the well-cressed women 'out side of St. Thomas' church dur ing the Roxburghe-Goelet wed ding silly and disgraceful, it is a sorry exnlbition of bad manners, bad breeding and vul garity. It is a sad commen tary upon our vaunted repub licanism. If the stories are true we ought to blush for our manners." Jacob A. Riis, Slum Worker.. "When I read the accounts of well-dressec. women who crawled into a coal hole to catch a glimpse of a few dia monds I was remlnaed that Here is much work to be done at the cthc- end of society also." o THREATEN TO STRIKE.
