We would advise Mr. Roosevelt to keep shy of New Orleans and, per haps, to establish cossack posts around the White House to ward off the aprpoach of Hon. W. S. Parker son, a lily white republican of the Crescent City. Mr. Parkerson is a northern gentle man who went to New Orleans some .years ago to practice law. He fared well with the people and became en amored of the southern city, its rich and almost regal social life, and al though a republican, sympathized, as should, with every cause of law dnd order. When next heard from by the public Mr. Parkerson was leading the popu lar mob that broke open tho parish prison and lynched some 'steen or more of the Italian mafia who had murdered a chief police officer of the city. Mr. Parkerson wore no mask. He did not hide his light. He stood up and boldly justified the whole af fair. Since then he has been fighting for a white man's republican party in the South. He is opposed to Roosevelt ideas of negro equality. He also op poses the president for doing other things that he says are incompatible with the principles of the party of Abraham Lincoln. At Tulano uni lversfty, in New Orleans, Saturday night, he called Mr. Roosevelt a "Ca ligula." What do you think of tHal? WHERE THE PEOPLE "ARE AT." x The republican leaders do not know where the people "are at." The signs of the times jae mixed up in the polit ical heavens, and the wise men now engagedIn Washington are not able o"fig-ire out "horoscopes that pleaso M their hopes and inspire confidence at "" tEe White House. Cuban reciprocity is all right. It vill go through in a lame and laggard way that will show how feebly tho re publicans themselves desire to keep their promises to a clean and free na tion. - i The Boys From the '"Ould Sod" Take Inspiration From the Endearing Strains of "Wearing of the Green," and Carry Erin's Banner to Victory. Mike Hannon, captain; Michael Ca sey, anchor; William O'Neil, Tom Cal lahan. Charles Nolan, John Sullivan, and Daniel Donnelly. Those are the good Irish lads that gripped the rope on Sunday night with the sturdy boys of Slavonian birth, and perched aloft the green banner of victory. It was a great pull. It is doubtful if there ever was in the history of tug-of-war contests a more determined team of winners. It is certain there never were better losers. Each team did their best. This may be acknowledg ed at once from the time taken in the contest. Just think of sis brawny men on each side, tugging on the rope for two hours and fifty-five minutes. Think of these six men against six men, with all the powerful energy and a hall full of enthusiastic admirers all pulling for their sides with words of encouragement to tho brave lads, with as much inspiration as their pride of nativity cculd command. It was a contest that will be talked of for months to come. When tugs- of-war are mentioned in the future, it will be to refer to the contest that was pulled off on Sunday nFght. When the owner of the Swim at Lowell dropped into the Annex last Thursday night, Mr. Markey bumped up against a Slavonian enthusiast, and the subject of a tug-of-war was men tioned. Mr. Markey, the gentleman referred to, stated that he thought the Irish team was just a little the best that ever was. The Slavonian in his mind doubted this statement, and expressed his doubt openly and above board, and backed his impres sion with the remark that his doubt was accompanied with a thousand dol lar bank roll. Mr. Markey only had the small change amounting to five hundred in his pocket at that moment, but he stated to his friend that if he would stand there right there for about ten minutes, he would take a chance at that thousand. No sooner said than done. He hopped lo the tele phono and called 'up "Xiike Hannon, and related the aforesaid doubt to Hanncn. . That was all that Mike wanted. In the twinkling of an eye, Mike was in an airship, and landed at the Annex almost before Markey could get away from the 'phone. Mr. Hannon, in a businesslike way, hunted up M. E. Cassiday, who also had a new airship tied to the front gate of his home, and the genial M. E. was soon at Han non's side. In a few moments more the two sides were in the midst of drawing up agreements, and each posted their forfeit money and sign ed the articles. PRICE BAKING POWOCr. CO-CHIC'SO It is with pleasure that we call the attention of our readers to the fact that the Continental Building aud Loan association of California has sent its representative to Bisbee for the purpose of establishing their sys tem of co-operative banking in our community by which the industrial and wage earning class can de posit a portion of tlieir earnings and receive a fhir consideration of In terest for same. We all know what a good savings bank means for any industrial com munity and especiall one that makes a specialty of handling small monthly deposits and pays a reasonable inter est for the use of money. McKInley was omnipotent while alive, he is inv pOfent since he is dead. Mr. Roosevelt once showed signs that he was -sane enough and brave enough to pursue an American policy of equity in trade relations with the world, 'sacrificing no "essential Amer ican manufacturin'gIntereat, Tint put ting the question of fair competition to the test in all foreign markets. But the saddest of all the falls that Ameri can statesmen have suffered is that of Theodore Roosevelt, who, for a re nomination to the presidency, has sac rificed his independence, "his honest views and his political fame of the future, to the pirsilanimous demands of the trade-worms of his party. He has given up a patriotic splendor for a partisan limelight and exchanged a national name for an incidental selling-plater chance to win a stake. This is the reduction to which Theodore Roosevelt, t3e man with an Ego, has reduced himself. The opportunity thus presented to the democratic party is one which we trust the leaders are not unabfc toi comprehend. The people of America believe in their Inner souls that the future prosperity and ascendancy of trade rests upon a right policy of reciprocity. The idea that we can force the whole world to trade with us on our absolute terms is fully -exploded. They do not have to, and McKinley so declared. Hence 'they will trade here, there and everywhere at their pleasure and profit." If wc do not offer them 'superiorlerms, then we are out of the deal. Democracy ought to spell democracy, and if dem ocracy does not mean reciprocity, then the United States has become a Chin ese autocracy where the favored few are always to be preferred to the pos- stDie many. til 9:30, little squads of men might have been seen wending their way along the paths to the Opera House, until at the latter hour that spacious building was filled to overflowing. The sightseers filled the space on the floor, they stood in the windows, they looked over the, shoulders of the per sons in front, they stood on tip toe, and they eagerly watched that 'strain on tho rope for three hours, all but five minutes. And the audience cheeered and roared as each side bent their exertions to outpull the other. (Continued on Page Five.) n. LADIES There will be a special song service given at the FirstfM. E. Thousands of dollars are paid out monthly in salaries to our citizens and yet how very litUe is put away to provide for the wet day that is sure to come to each of us and how soon we will need it none can tell. A careful analysis of the plans out lined by 4he Continental Building and Loan Association will convince the most sceptical that they are beyond question a substantial institution and offer nothing but what can reason ably be expected from money careful ly invested. Each depositor, no mat ter how small his account, is a partner In the bank and participates in the full net earnings of his capital invested, thus although the deposit may be too small of itself to accomplish much, yet when placed with the deposits of over 15,000 other depositors it pro duces sufficient capital to transact an immense business. Monthly deposits with this associa tion can be withdrawn at any Ume and carry guaranteed rates of Inter est ranging from C to 10 per cent per annum. Thus the man who is not sure of his income can safely carry his savings account with the Contl- nental Building and Loan association, Knowing that should it become neces sary to withdraw it, ho can dp so on demand. Many people dealing with "local and eastern companies in the past, have found it difficult to realize ready cash in time of need without suffering a heavy loss. Hence have thus formed unfavorable opinions of Building and Loan institutions, thinking, perhaps, they were all alike in this respect. To such we would state that a careful examination of the plan of the Conti nental Building and Loan association would reveal the fact that they have adopted a system far superior to that of their competitors and a plan which insures the same consideration to the deplsitor as that given by the suc cessful savings band. This feature should insure to them the hearty endorsement and patron age of the citizens of Bisbee who are content with good security and a fair rate of interest for their sav ings. Mr. Reynolds, the special agent of the above company, is presenting the special features of his association to the people of Bisbee on an honest basis, and anyone who meets him will be convinced that he is here to do business only on such a plan as will insure the continued good will and patronage of his clients for this, "The Poor Man's Savings Bank." Mr. Reynolds informs us that he will meet those desiring information concerning this association at any time convenient for them and we would recommend that our people give him a chance to outline their plan of banking and draw a contrast Detween an up-to-date institution and one working on an obsolete plan in use zo years ago.
