IN SIX STATES Progressives Tjiy to Use So Called Initiative-to Show , They Were First for Equal Rights California" LEADING WASHINGTON, D. C-, Oct 23. In the general election two weeks from today women will vote In six States, California, Washington, Idaho, Colo rado, Wyoming and Utah, a fact, which campaign managers of the vat lous parties have taken Into consider ation. While the progressive party was the only one of the three lead ing political organisations to give its official stamp of approval to the equal suffrage movement,, the republican and democratic leaders have .shown their appreciation of the importance ot that movement t by enlisting the services of women, workers with an eye to the result ot the six slates In which women have been granted the full rights of the franchise. Those six states have, a total representation In the electoral college ot 3S totes, divided as follow: -i California 13, Colorado 7, Idaho-.,Utah 4, Wash ington 7, Wyoming 3. According to the last census Cal Ifornia has a total of C71.3SG women (eligible to vote, fpi) the other five states tne figures - are- as follows' Colorado, 213,425: Btdli, 85.72a ;- WaaV ington, 277,727; Idad. In 189ft -Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burrpach received 173 votes The cbolc$jthen devolved tip on the house of .representatives, with the result that Jef(erson was elected. in IXZ4 none ofrfthe candidates for president receive enough electoral votes to elect, andthe -choice again devolved upon the house ot reuresent- aties. when John Quincy Adams was cnosen in 1S40 Zachary Taylor de feated Lewis ("ass 'by just thirty -six votes. In 1870 'Rutarford B. Hayes defeated Samiyl j.l..Tilden by one vote, and In )SSGrbVer Cleveland defeated James O.'jjalinc by thirty seven votes. In addition to the six states In which women Jjave been gicn the right to vote ror president there are numerous other states in which they have the rights of limited suffrage In fact, there are in the United States today only nineteen-states which have no form nf suffrage for women, and even in some of those there are cit ies In which women have the right to vote for schoolpllcials and on tax matters The nineteen states Srfc Nevads., Texas, Missouri. Arkansas, Mississippi, lndiamr. Kentucky, Ten nessee, Alabama, Florida. Georgia, South Carolina. North Carolina, Vir ginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Maine.-1 Kentucky May, Vpte. Women. Kentucky already has felt the en terlng wedge and rTore the presiden tial election in 1915; It is very likely that half a dozen tf'more states will have adopted woman suffrage, in ad dition to the six now on the roll. In the election two weeks from today the voters of Oregon, Kansas. Michi gan, Wisconsin and' Arizona will vote on the adoption of constitutional amendments grating the full rights of suffrage to women. The equal suffrage leaders ate confident that out of these five" states pome are hound to vllp through In spite of all the opponents can dp, and a good many thousand voters bf th& "weak cr" tex will bo addVd to the present million and a quarter after Novem ber 5. So far the equal suffrage cafese has scored its greatest victories in the far west. No state in the east or south has vet granted to women 'the full suffrage rlghs. In Ohio, where a vote on the blatter was taken this summer, the cause was defeated It Is believed, and not without reason, that the result In the Buckeye state will Influence the vote soon to be taken in Michigan and Wisconsin In Wisconsin the suffragists are fighting hard and have strong hors of suc cess. 'It is generally conceded, bow tver, that Kansas Is more likely to adopt the amendment than is any of the other states In which the matter Is to be voted on rgxt month. ' The woman suffrage movement ha3 made less of an impression on the old south, so far as practical results are concerned, thariton'any other se tion of the country; Hut even her the agitation Is beginning to be felt, and It Is not improbable that the suf fragists will Include JLouisiana, Geor cla and one or tweftothers in the list or "camHftlgn, states'" within another year or two. i.
