SANTA GLAUS' HAY N0TGET LETTERS No Notice Received by Local Postmaster About Alak- mg Delivery Here Unless the recent order Issued by Postmaster General Hitchcock lifting the- ban on mall addressed to Mr. Santa Claus, North Pole, reaches Post master Casstdy very soon, several let ters addressed to that gentleman will bo forwarded to the dead letter of fice. Nearly a week ago Postmaster General Hitchcock Issued an order authorizing all postmasters to deliv er "Santa Claus" letter to such char itable institutions us may desire to give attention to the requests, but ns jet the Hlsbee lwstoffice has re ceived no notice of the order. in former years as the Christmas season approached many thousands of letters were received for S. Claus, North Pole, and given to charitable institutions who asked for them in order that poor children making re quests might not be overlooked. For some reason this order was with drawn but the recent decision of Post master Hitchcock re-established the old custom. It the letters fail to benr stamps It will be necessary under the law for the postmaster to forward them to the dead letter office, but In that event he Is authorized by the new or ' Uer to submit the names and ad dresses of cliaritable organizations that are filing to look to the wants of the writers. The advices received here state that Sherwood died at St. Joseph's hospital In Albuquerque. Of fine appearance, well groomed, of pleasing manner, he was extremely likable and numbered friends by the hundred. SSmy are th kind expres sions that are heard of him coupled with words of regret that he has past ed beyond the divide. During his career in the early days of Arizona among his other oc cupations he was a dispatch and mail carrier and went through the perilous times when ihy renegade Apache wero on the war path. In Disbee there are' many who can and do remember kindnesses whicn he showed them. He left here about six years ago but returned for a visit about a year since and when he leit at that time went to Albuquorquo where he resided until his death.
