building and that tbe building rent

ato vicinity of tbe business and resi
dent portion of tbe county seat and
therefore tbe committee recommend
that the connty furnish either by
purchase or erection sufficient and
comfortable buildings at such a dis
tance from the business portion of
town as would be most consistent
with convenience and good sanitary
measures

therefore represent that the business
of the office of sheriff is so conducted
tnat we are unable to make any sug
gestions

We proceeded to make a thorough
examination of tbe jail and found tbe

cells and corridors in a very cleanly
condition also the surroundings on
the outside in frood order tbe pris
oners exprueeed themselves aa be
ing well treated by tbe sheriff and
bis deputy and that tbe food fur
nished was clean and pleanty of it
Everything is as far aa we could de
tect in a safe condition for tbo con
finment of prisoners
We would recomsaead that a piece
of ground be purchased from tbe lot
of Mossrs Welton Beecher and
tbe jail yard enlarged by moving
back tbo fence so that a walk could
be made entirely around tba jail thus
materially adding to tbe safety of
tbat institution would also recom
mend that more ventilation be given
to tbe cells thus adding greatly to tbe
comfort and health of those confined

has never missed a meeting of the
Board of Supervisors during his ad

tion of Province of Quebec Tbia
mineral baa been found to occur in
nearly all of tbe Provinces of the
Dominion but aa yet no mining has
been dune outeido of tbe eastern
townships In tbe tewnahips of
TbetfordBrougbtonColerraine and
at Wolfstown and Danville mines
bave been opened and a large quan
tity of minoral has been taken from
them Tho Tbetford mines are bow
over tbe principal producers and
their output is rapidly gaining favour
in the Americao and European mar
kets so excellent is the quality of the
asbostos mined The Bolton Aabes
tos raciting uo aro carrying on ex
tensive mining operations on their
property iu Tbetford and employ
eight miners and workmen the
monthly output averaging about
seventy fire tons King Brothers em
ploy forty hands at their mine in
tbe same township and produce
about thirty live tons monthly The
Johnson Companys mines in Tbet
ford are yielding a very superior
quality of asbestos and in fair quan
tity Tbe force employed does not
exceed sixty hands and tho output
averages two toss daily Tbe veins
of asbestos on this companys prop
erty are of a most superior quality
and a largo proportion of tbe pro
duct of its mines is shipped through
out tbe year to all parts of tbe globe
especially to the European market
wberu tbe demand is beginning to
overrun tbe supply One of the firms
in Europe who have been using th
companys asbostos has secured the
contract for supplying Her Msj6ty V
navy with asoestos goods and has
fuither obtained orders from the
Indian sate railways and from
many of tbo most important railway
compHUies in Europe tho leading
European iron and steel mannfact
urers engineers and steamship com
panies are also supplied with ssbesto
goods by tho firm referred to Tbe
mill board manufactured from the
Johnson Companys asbestos ban
beon tested both in England ard
Scotland before government officials
and managers of public works by
steam boiling wator and blow pipe
and has in every instance with
stood tbe testa most satisfactorily
mines will be opened and tbat a
greatly increased quantity of aabes
tos will be produced in Canada
during tbe next few years Canadian

It appears from official tables sajs
the Age of Steel that tbe product of
tbe Lake Superior copper mines for
tbe month of April May and June is
considerably larger than for tbe
corresponding time in 1883 Since
January 1st the production of min
eral has beon 19334 tons aa against
16441 tons for the first half year in
1883 Calumet and Heel a show an
increase from 10125 to 1210 tons
Last year the Lake mines produced
about WUUUlMJ pounds There is
good reason to expect tbat this will
bo increased to 70000000 in 1884 It
must be remiimberod too that this
represents tbe output of our Lake
Superior mines alone Arizona is
counted on to produce this year 20
000000 pounds Montana 4000000
Missouri and other places not incln
ded in nlove 2000000 Iu the aggra
gate therefore the amount of our
copper product for the year will not
be far from 100000000 pounds
Wbero is tbe enormous amount to be
marketed The great producers in
all pans of tho world are stuggling
for its markets Tbe consumption
of tbo United States is not far from
78000000 pounds and 10000000
pounds of Lake are already con trac
ed for abroad This loaves a bal
ance of over 10000000 poundwbich
rucst le a constant drawback to any
improving in values
