B. .Roads, an old and highly respected pioneer of this Ter ritory. On the 29th ult, deceased, in company with W. G. Poindexter, started in a email boat to cross tho river. About the iniddio of th river the boat struck a suag and turned over. Roads got on a sand spit and stood for a moment up to his waist in the water, when he suddenly sunk and has not been seen since. Poindexttr saved himself by clinging to the boat. The deceased was formerly n residsnt of Pima County but for the past few year?, has ben living at Yuma where he had accumulated considerable property. He was well and favorably known throughout both counties and his sudden death has cm', a. gloom upon the spirits of many a warm friend. ANotelOSntertainment: Quite an exite meat sprung up oh 3Uhday evening last at the announcement that a sham battle was about to came off at the Papngo rancherin, between party of 20 or 20 Merican on one side and and as many Papago Indians, who personated wild Apaches, on the other. At 4 o'clock, p. m., the scene was crowded by about 1500 spectators eagerly watching for the opening of the combat. The Papagos occupied a position among the shrubbery,- a short distance from their rancheria, and stood in line awaiting the command of their Chief. The Mexicans took a position about 200 yards in front, armed with rifles loaded with blank cartridges, Mat ters being at lemth satisfactorily arranged the I'apago Chief gave the signal by a whoop, and hardly had the sound reached the andienca befoie the Indians had disappeared prostrat ingthemselveB upon the earth in such manner a3 to hide themslvea entirely from view. They now commenced a crawling march toward tho enemy, starting to their feet at times and bounding -forward, at the sama time despatch ing arrows at the Mexicans, and falling fiat upon the earth when the latter fired a volley from their muskets. This march continued in the same order until the.., parties came to close quarters when a brisk shooting of arrows and firing of muskets took place indiscrimi nately, when the Indiana retreated taking one captive with them and leaTing several dead and wounded upen the field. Tho scsne was one which conH not be view ed without a feeling of excitement. , The paint ed Indians bearing all tho , paraphrcnalia of savage war, and whooping .and yelling like demons, presented a most vivid picture of those terr.ble scenes upon the frontier so ofton dreadfully real.
