Ancient portrait busts nro full of ex pression, nml, In this connection, It Is a singular fact that there Is compara tively little difference In the typo of countenance between the women of the time of the Caesars and the women of our own age. When they were repre senting In marble or bronze the f2.v tures of living women, the nncleiit sculptors wore true to life, but the mo ment they departed from the copy set before them and attempted to Idealize they became meaningless. There la not nn atom of expression In the face of Venus us It has come down to us In In numerable statues and busts; the fea tures nre Irreproachable, but the face Is that of a doll, mid the same lack of ex pression Is observable In the Junos, the Mlncrvas, the Muses, the Graces, mid other Ideal female faces which the Greek mid Itomnu sculptors preserved for us In bronze mid marble. In seek ing to avoid posltlvcness of expression, as la portraits, they lost nil, mid pre sented regular features, but nothing more. While the ancient portrait busts nre. therefore, ndmlrable, the ancient Ideal statues arc largely destitute of character. Of Uie truthfulness of the busts we know nothing, mid, indeed, It Is remarkable to notice how greatly tho portrait busts of the same man differ from each other. There nro ten or twelve bust of Julius Caesar, for In stance, each so different from all tho others that I't would be Impossible to Identify them ns leIonglng to the samo man, and tho same peculiarity may 1m noticed In tho case of several other celebrities of that age. The sculptors of our own day nre still, to flonio extent, fettered by the tradi tions of tho ancient art canons, but tho painters havo burst their bonds mid Fires Klovcn Shots n Hrcnttit. Ex periments made thus fur show that on the occasion of a brief, sharp attack the gun can actually be ninde to Hie eleven shots In n single second. A very Interesting foatuie of this new gun Is that the explosive power results from tin u-'C of cordite. The whole of this substance Is expended 111 pressure, whereas black powder Is only useful for pressure to the extent of r,0 per cent. The experiments wllli cordite and with the gun referred to show conclusively that eordlto Is not affected by wnter. as Is gunpowder, nnd will stand gteat variation In temperature. Tho saylug Is Just as truo now as when ho stolo It from Georgo gauds' novel and mado It us much his own as he could by putting It lu rhyme and motor. Artistically, tho paluters of tho present day stand on tho shoulders of thoso wno nuvo gone ueioro uioui, mm aro able to create models of their own. Particularly Is this Uie case in tno matter of femalo beauty. Every ago and country has Its own stondurds or Ideals In this inntter, aud what would bo considered a perfect typo in ono might bo regarded as deficient In an other, so that a dogmatic ruling on tho mibject, while It might bo satisfactory to some, mlirht also bo extremely dis tasteful to others. The belle of Pa homey would hnrdly shlno In Turin, while tho most beautiful CWneso worn mi would not como up to European Ideas, yet thoso ladles nro doubtless very beautiful In tho eyes of tho gal Jams of their respective countries, how ever much tholr charms might lack of eatlsfylng tho aesthetic tastes of tho focnux of other lands. Hut nniong the Caucasian races tliero lhis been a gen eral consensus of artistic opinion ns to whnt constitutes fomalo beauty, nog- ntiiritv of features, without unduo established Ideals of their own. In so doing, they havo freed themselves, not only from tho thrnlldom of tho undent art rules, but also from tho almost equally rigorous bondage of the Ho unbMiMico art The present age, In art ns lu almost everything else, has brok en away, to no Inconsiderable extent, from the domination of IU predecessors. mul tho artists havo created for thorn selves now Ideals, which appeal moro strongly than those of former times to the public taste, becauso they nre moro truthful to nature than their predeces sors. Ono touch of nature In art, as In poetry or Uctlon, makes the whole world kin, nnd In this fact may bo found an explanation of the popularity of such paintings as "The Angolus." Where the wholo modern nrt Is tic world has taken tho same course, com parisons would be Invidious, but Illus trations of tho peculiarly modem stylo may easily bo observed, not only In such pictures as thoso left by Millet, but also In "Now Aro tho Days of Itoses," by Ilernnrd; "At tho Feast," by Leon I'ortunskli "Tmumerel" nnd "Song." by Konrnd Klofel: "The Water Carrier," by Dlnns; nnd "Tho Flower Girl." by Edmund do Pury. There nro hundreds of others, but tho striking In dividuality of tho art of the present day may be ns well exhibited by one ex ample ns by n dozen or a hundred, and theso Illustrations nro typical of the whole. The causo of tho remarkable differ ence Is not dltllcult to llnd. The artists of our time have a vivid apprehension of the fact that the closer tho approxi mation of nrt to nature, tho truer be comes the plcturo as an art work, and also as a gllmpso of one phase of life. In "Tniiinierol," for instance, there Is tho suggestion, not only of n charming face mm ilgure, but nlso of n train of reflection and reminiscence. It Is a beautiful picture, also suggestive, and the b:holdur feels certain that behind It lies a wholo romance, a three-volumo novel, with plot, Incidents and denoue ment complete. So also round thi?
