Health Commissioner William A. Evans declares that too llttlu money Is given tho health department an nually for carrying on Its work. His complaint Is directed against tho con tinual decrease of tho department's annual appropriation. This at pres ent Is about $200,000 less than it was In 1907. although tho work has great' ly Increased In tho past three years. In this statement Dr. Evans says: "There Is no way to get milk pro tected except by paying Inspectors and tho cost of Inspection. If milk Is not properly inspected pcoplo dlo from using It. What is truo of our work In regard to milk Is truo of every other duty of tho health depart ment. "The men ln tho health department get less pay than men doing tho samo character of work in other cities. They arc paid less than men comparable with them In national, stnto or county governments, or ln other arms of the city govornment. "Unless these men arc moro ade quately paid I am not going to ask them to do the amount of work which they liavo been doing. Money spent for tho prevention of dlseaso pays better returns than any other invest ment tho city can make." Reports that circulars asking for tho arrest of persons wanted for va rious crimes bavo been sent to other cities bearing tho namo of Chicago pollco olllclals, which wcro unauthor ized, caused Assistant Chief Schut tier to Issue an order Sunday to all members of tho pollco department, Instructing them to send out no more without llrst getting tho approval of Captain Wood of tho detective bu reau. Detective agencies which bavo been doing so have been warned not to uso tho name of tbo Chicago pollco department on circulars unless they aro sent out by Captain Wood.
