The water meter promoters have a regular corps of writers employed to urge water meters In every flat through the "letters from the people" columns of dally papers. The present City Council has a lot to answer for, Including the garbage muddle, water meter graft, gas shut off graft, and, last but not least, Tele phone Monopoly and high phone rates. Democrats all over are talking of John J, Coburn for Judgo of the Pro bate Court. His nomination would mean certain election. A better quali fied man for the position could not be found than Mr. Coburn. He Is an able and humane man and would make a courageous, fair-minded and painstak ing Judge. His record as a lawyer and a citizen commends him for the position. Telephone monopoly In Chicago; a water meter In every flat; a gas shut off for every story; a grab at the last nickel of every citizen, Is the program of the grafters' union. . Telephone competition in Chicago Is needed and needed badly. The people are sick and tired of be ing forced to submit to the demands of the 'phono trust They resent the gall of the trust in wanting the city to give It a monopoly and they are aot going to stand for any such actios by the city. ; For years they have suffered pa tiently the wrongs put upon them by the trust and they have corns to the position whore they are not going Is stand for It any longer. The one thing that will put stop to ths high rates and poor service, from which the people of Chicago have suffered for years, Is telephone competition. Chicago demands 'phone competi tion. The Democracy is rising for Roger C. Sullivan for Senator. You ean't stop it, and the people will nominate him beyond any doubt. It is possible to supply local tele phone service in .cities at one cent per call, plus a rental charge so low that every household could have serv ice. This would Increase long dis tance business and would not Impair the net earning fund of 9103,000,000 held by the Trust, according to Its annual report, just Issued.
