MUCH FAMILY POLITICS The Gang is reported to bo fencing In the lake up in Edgewater, so that public access to the lako Bhoro is do tiled to citizens, rich and poor alike. These fences should be torn down by the city or the Lincoln Pa'rk board. Immediate adoption of the plan agreed upon by tho Chicago plan com mission and the city council's commit tee on harbors looking toward a com prehensive development of the lako front so It can be of use to everybody for bathing beaches and other pur poses is advocated in a statement is sued by Charles H. Ho urges tho peo WANT So-called Democrats havo nominated a ticket without a German by birth or descent on it A Connery ts on it of course, for one of the best Jobs. Not a man on the ticket had an American grandfather, the only out going county official who had an American grandfather, County Sur veyor George C. Waterman, was not renominated. No Germans were wanted. Some of the leaders were interviewed by The Tribune with the following re sults: Ross C. Hall, representing the country towns, said: CONNERY TAXES Items About Them; Gleaned from Printed Personal Property Assessments; Also, the Taxes Levied on tabor Unions. The public la naturally anxious to know what personal property taxes its office holders pay. So much has been said about the number of Con nerys holding public office in Chicago that many inquiries have been made as to what personal property assssa ments are laid against these patriotic: persons by tho Board of Assessors. The printed lists or personal proper ty assessments for 1916 show the fol lowing facta: Joseph F. connery, Recorder of Deeds, at a salary of f 9,000 a year; also said to be secretary of a grave yard company, salary not learned and real estate dealer at 134 South La Salle street. House, 2028 West Wash ington boulevard. Assessment on printed list for Dis trict 84, West Town, $400. Official salary. $36,000 for four years. Assessed on $400. Joseph F. Connery, Recorder of Deeds, at $9,000 per year; secretary of the Graceland Cemetery Improvement Association and real estate dealer, Is not listed on the assessors' printed list for district 16, South Town, at his office, 134 South La Salle street Henry T. Connery, Bank Examiner, House, 2028 West Washington boule vard. No assessment O. A. Connery, teacher. House, 2028 West Washington boulevard. No assessment. William J. Connery, clerk Board of Review. M, F. Connery, County building, tbrop avenuo. Chief Clerk, 120 House, 6234 Win- No assessment, Francis D. Connery, Comptroller of the Sanitary District of Cbtcago, at $6,000 per year. House, 2702 North Washtenaw avenue. No assessment on printed list for that district, Francis D. Connery, Comptroller of Sanitary District of Chicago, at $6,000 per year, moved since May 1 to 1128 Columbia avenue. No assessment at that number. The printed lists from which these statements aro'taken wero sent out by the Board of Assessors in July, 1916. This statement Is printed to antlcipnte auy alleged typographical error discoveries by the Assessors or Board of Rovlew. ' The Board of Assessors make ple of Chicago to learn a lesson from tho hot wave. Commenting upon these encroach ments on tho rights of tho people tho Dally News said editorially: "What a blessing to the people of Chicago these facilities for health-giving recreation would have proved if they had been In existence at the time of tho recent prolonged period of ox cesslvo heat. Surely It ought to bo possible to settle speedily tho differ ences that are productive of such seri ous loss to the people." Using Sheridan Road for a garage In tho vicinity of Balmoral avenue NO GERMAN "Our ticket will be unbeatable in November after we have slated a few Poles for the Municipal court. The city hall forces have put up a ticket of Swedes' and Germans. We've named a ticket, of Irish and Poles. How can we lose?" There isn't a single German on the entire Sullivan alate, the talk among the slatemakers being that no Ger man had a chance In Cook County this fall. Tho full slate' named follows: Recorder Joseph F. Connery. Circuit Court Clerk John W. Rat ney. Superior Court Clerk James C. Gavin. Coroner James B. Bowler. some very curious mistakes. It ap pears from the following received by The Chicago Eagle, August 7, 1910, and postmarked same date, that the official printed assessment roll for dis trict No. 4, Lake Vlow, which omitted Mr. John T. Connery's name and as sessment, was at fault, as witness this letter: BOARD OF ASSESSORS. July 28, 1916. Mr. John T. Connery, Care Edgewater Beach Hotel. Dear Sir! Through a typographical error the Printed List tor District No. 4, Lako View, failod to Include your name for personal property. Our books show that you are assessed on a Full Value of $2,100. Respectfully yours, BOARD OF ASSESSORS, By CHARLES KRUTCKOFF. People know enough about this Board of Assessors to believe that It would stop at nothing. But no one suspected It of being so hardened ob to commit a "typo graphical error." J. T. Connery's name does not ap pear on the printed assessment list which Includes the territory In which his business office at 332 South Mich igan avonue is located, in District 20, town of South Chicago. The Miami Coal Company at 332 8. Michigan avenue, of which Mr. Cou nery Is president, and Reviewer Blockl is vice president, la assessed on a Full Value of $3,000. Labor organisations do not appear to escape the vigilance of the Asses sors. The Chicago Federation f Labor on Its desk at 166 West Washington street, Is assessed at $800. Tho Brotherhood of AH Railroad Men at 320 West Madison street, ('assessed at $400. Bakery Drivers' Union, desk in room 600, 176 West Washington street, as sessed at $900, Chauffeurs' Union, desk in room 506, 175 West Washington street, as sessed at $900. Laundry Drivers' Union, desk in room 506, 175 West Washington streot, assessed at $900. Milk Drivers' Union, desk in room 506, 175 West Washington street & seised at $900. Tea and Coffee Drivers' Union, desk in room 606, 175 West Washington street, assessed at $600. BUI Posters' Union, desk In room 400, 176 West Washington street, as sessed at $459. A large number of other assess ments against labor organisations might be quoted, causes Edgewater residents to be rightfully Indignant at the Auto Gang's antics. Lake Michigan belongs to the peo ple. Edgewater residents nra not includ ed, however. Tho waters of the lake aro being barred from all, rich and poor alike. No wonder there is a feeling of in dignation over the matter. Great Indignation is felt In Edge water over the action of certain peo ple In shutting the public off from tho lake shore. Tho park board Is blamed. Assossor (six year term) Martin J. O'Brien. Assessor (to All vacancy) Joseph Cepak. Board of Review Thos. J. Webb. County Surveyor William P. Fee ney. President Sanitary District Thom as M. Sullivan. Sanitary Trustees Joseph Rushke wlcz and James A. Long. State's Attorney Maclay Hoyne. Superior Court Judge (to fill va cancy)Joseph Sabath. Circuit Judge (to fill vacancy) Jacob H. Hopkins. "We will nominate Hoyne and cut the guts out of him at the polls like we did In 1912," said ono leader. But what's the use? Theso from one district, District 9, South Town, are enough. People looking for the Edgewater Beach Hotel, 6325 Sheridan Road, said to be owned In part by tho Connerys would look In vain for it if they searched the 1916 printed assessment roll of District No. 4, town of Lako View for it. Harry R. Gibbons, tho well known box manufacturer, Is assessed on $2,000 at his residence, 6402 Sheridan road. M, H. McGovern, the well known contractor, lives at 6459 Sheridan Road and is assessed on $2,100. M. M. Magasarlan, at 6115 Sheridan Road, is listed at $2,700. Thomas J. Adolphus WoU, 5564 Sheridan road, is listed at $2,250. How the assossors could go north and south of 5325 Sheridan road, where the Edgewater Beach Hotel is located, and assess all of the above named cltlzenB and not list the Edgewater Beach Hotel la a problem that faces every reader of the printed list Issued by the assessors for District No. 4, Town of Lake View.
