I Burly Policemen at the Polls? The Contention Meets. There is om- ward in this city hope lesslv Republican. It is the shoe string district, better known as the l?luek ix'lt. It was extendedAbv th? Democrats to get all o? the colored voters as far as possible into thia ward and tims have five Democratic wards and one Republican. The col? ored vote is as about 6 to <s in theeitv. Jackson Ward as it is called 1ms figured prom inently in city, state and na? tional polities. It WOS the vote of this ward thal elected ex-Judge Ed? mund Waddill, Jr., to the 51s1 (Con? gress and caused rion. Geo. D. Wise to come marching home. The polls were opened for registration of vo? ters on the 13th inst. From 4 to <> burly policemen were stationed nt each precinct in the ward doing nothing;. They were there simply to overawe voters and to make them submit to any outrage the registrar ami challenger saw fit to impose upon them. The registrars in many cases assisted in t he delny. As ninny eol ored men hail to register after they came from work this method was resorted t o. MSHONRST TACTICS at Tin: POLLS. Editor Mitchell saw a colored man who had Leen given n transfer to the 3d precinct, Jackson Ward, simply because his middle name was not given, although lie lind never regis? tered under it. he was not allowed to register. Aaron Harrison, a col? ored man who resides at SIS ,\. Inf street, enquired whether or not his linnie was on the hook, lt was found that it had been stricken off, possibly as dead. This man had liv ?h! in that precinct four years and yet would have been disfranchised. The following; conversation took pint* between the Democratic registrar, R. IL Taylor, and Mr. Harrison: Mr. Harrison.) "1 want to see if Hiv name is on the book." Registrar Taylor, after leisurely Mo, il's stricken off. How ,:e; there'.'" Harrison.J "Four years." REGISTRAR. J "Where were yon ai the last election '.'" Harrison.] "In line looking af yon all keeping; us from voting." Registrar.] "Where did yon live before?" Harrison.] ?"In Richmond." Registrar.] "How long have yon Leen living here?" Harrison.] "Eversince tbs second year of the war." Registrar, apparently thinking.] "When was t hat ?" Harrison, after being posted by ed? itor Mitchell.] "1862. Registrar.] "How old are you?" Harrison.] "I don't know. Registrar.] "Well.you ought to know vow age.'1 Editor Mitchell.) "All the law in? tends is that you are over 21 yearn of sge, tell him 45." Harrison.) "About45or 50,say 45. Registrar.) "1 don't know that man lives there, ls your name Har? ris?" Harrison.) "No. sir. Harrison." Robt. Bullock, Republican challen? ger.) "1 know him. he lias lived there e\ ci- sines I've known him." Democratic canvasser.) "He don't live t here." Mr. Mitchell to Harrison.) "Ask him if he'll register you, if not inst take an appeal to the Judge of the Hustings Court and come away." Harrison.) "Will you register me?" Registrar.) "I'm trying to timi that ont now." Mr. Mitchell to registrar.) "I know that Mr. Harrison lives there. I've been sending him the Planet there four years. There hi no need for all this delay." Registrar.) "I don't kino, yon. Who are you?" Editor Mitchell.) "Mitchell of the City Council." A. li. Qnigon, Esq.) "There may may he some mistake in his name." Democratic Canvasser.) "Yes, there may have been some mistake." Registrar]?"We all make mis? takes, [to Mr. Harrison] How do you spell your name? " Harrison]?** You konw that l>et ter than I d?). " Editor. Mitchell]!?" II a-r-r-i fi-o-n.?" Registrar, to Editor Mitchell]? "How does President Harrison spell his name? " lauron Mitchell]" I presume he spells it the same way. " Registrar]?"You arejwrong. He spells it with one'r'. You nie not a good Republican." He t hen went on to tell something about a girl. Aaron Harrison was then registered. lt seems that the Democrats lum puta very illiterate registrar in th* lld Precinct, Jackson ward for Har? rison is spelled just as Mr. Mitchell said it was and not as Registrai Taylor would have himself believe He was a white man; but there wai a practical demonstration that t Negro could spell better flinn In could.
