The signal victory ofJack Johnson over Tom*
my Burns, the Heavyweight champion and the se*
curing of that title by a Negro9 for the first time in
the pugilistic ring has caused the publie to demand
that Jas. Jeffries, the retired heavy*xveight cham*
pion9 who has never suffered defeat since he won
the title9 shall meet the colored champion.
Despite the fact that he has declared that he
woutfd never enter the ring again and that he will
not fight a Negro9 he has been induced to give
sparring exhibitions on the stage.
The Mew York newspaper pictures his predic
ament as he appears before the footlights. He is
on record as having declared that he would not
fight Johnson or any one else for a million doilars.
Still the promoters have "hung up" a purse of
seventy-five thousand doilars and it may be in=
creased to one hundred thousand doilars. This
is the largest sum ever offered in a prize ring.
Johnson has already announced that he is willing.
He is now receiving one thousand seven hundred
and fifty doilars per week.
