GREY rain stabbed down on the great brown Missis
sippi, whipping its turbulent surface into a saffron
froth. The big river, writhing and twisting in its
narrow channel like a monstrous yellow snake, seemed to

flood-swept banks. ♦

houses, logs, and indescribable bits of debris floated along
sullenly, or danced madly in the grasp of the seething dark
flood.
From the far north raced the roaring Mississippi,
carrying with it mute evidences of its rapacious hunger, and
leaving in its wake thousands of acres of desolated, flooded
farm lands, and hundreds of small towns which were swept
abruptly from peaceful security by its terrible fury. Through
the very heart of the South it rushed, bringing with it death
