MAY ESTABLISH INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL AT FORT LEE, VA. New Educational Movement Encour aged by Northern Philanthropists. Unless the present plans of the pro moters miscarry the people of Rich mond. Va.. and vicinity will have n great Industrial school at Fort Lee. Va.. just out from the city limits of Richmond in the near future. It is understood that northern philan thropists have promised to contribute the sum of S’jri.OOO for the erection of the first building, and a like sum will be contributed annually for the main tenance of the school. The Hou. Giles B. Jackson, president of the commission having charge of the arrangements for the big exposi tion to be held in Richmond In July and Mr. William Miller, secretary of the Negro Historical association while In New York recently visited several philanthropists. The proposed school was heartily indorsed as a splendid plan for the Industrial education of colored boys and for tbe domestic training of girls. It is plunned to op erate an experimental farm In connec tion with the school, where farmers of the south will be taught scientific fnrmiug. Wjiile in New York President .tack son and Secretary Miller conferred with heads of the American To bacco company and secured their prom- I ise to aid In Installing a big tobacco exhibit at the exposition In order to i encourage the cultivation of tobacco. Other tobacco companies will be Invit ed to aid in putting on, this exhibit. They also had an interview with the authorities of the Cotton Exchange of New York and asked them to put on a cotton exhibit. President Jackson stated that lie re ceived much encouragement. Edward K. Cone, president of tbe exchange, promised to take the matter up with members of the exchange to see what could be done. Mr. Cone said he thor oughly indorsed Mr. Jackson’s plans for both the school and tbe exposition. Mr. Jackson says it was found nec essary to secure the state fair grounds because doubt was expressed as to • whether the trolley line would be ex tended to Fort Lee before the opening date for the exposition. July 4. The association owns 100 acres of land at Fort Lee. which is well adapted for use ss «n\exposltion ground, but on ac count of inadequate railway facilities and other hindrances ft was thought I test to make other arrangements.
