Sensation followed sensation at the time of the close of the great Barnaby murder case, that has been on in th courts of Denver, Colo., for several weeks. "Within the space of 24 hours Dr. Graves lvas convicted, made a confession and at tempted suicide in jaiL His wife's reason ib dethroned, and his aged mother ia dying. Colonel Ballou, whom Graves in his confession says instigated the poisoning, has fled from Denver. In another day he would have been arrested, charged with being coconspirator in the death of tht late Mrs. Barnaby. The jury's verdict was murder in the first degree. It was out only two hours. When the clerk had finished reading the waled verdict a 6cream, which will for ever ring in the eara of the jury, broke the stillness, and Mrs. Graves seized hex husband about the neck, covering his face with kisses. Notice of a new trial was immediately given by the defendant's counsel. ,t Two deputy sheriffs escorted Graves to ij the jail, to whom they claim he made a ' full confession. Graves, however, de 5 nies this, and clings to his original story. During the night he was prevented from suiciding by a guard. A strong effort is to be made to get him a new trial. STORY OP THE CRIME. In March of last year a quart bottle of whisky was mailed from Boston to Mrs. J. B. Barnaby, Penver, Colo. The bottl was unsealed and passed through many nands, among others, the hostlers in Denver. Mrs. Barnaby was then in California with Mrs. "Worrell, but returned on April 9. The next day the package containing the bottle was secured by her, and that evening she and Mrs. Worrell drank quite freely. Both were soon taken vio lently ill, and, after six days of suffering, Mrs. Barnaby died. Mrs. Worrell is still a sufferer from the obnoxious dose. An examination of the whiskey showed that there was in it arsenite of potassium in considerable quantities. Dr. Graves had for years been a close professional and social friend of Mrs. Barnaby, who was very wealthy. At one time she made a will bequeathing him $25,000. He is a resident of Providence, R. I. Suspicion pointed to him as the sender of the fatal bottle, the motive alleged being that he wanted to secure the legacy of 25,000. However, the will had been changed. In the trial experts identified the writ ing on the package as that of Dr. Graves. Ths doctor had-a large medical practice. HIS OWN GRANDFATHER. VUr. Queer Cause a. Here is the singular letter that he left: "I married a widow who had a grown up daughter. My father visited our house Tery often, fell in love with my step daughter, and married her. So my father became my son in law, and my step daughter my mother because she was my father's wife. Soon afterward my wife had a son he was my father's brother in law and my uncle, for he wa the brother of my stepmother. My father's wife, i. e. my stepdaughter, had also a son; he was of course my brother and in the mean time my grandchild, for he was the son of my daughter. My wife was my grandmother, because she was my mother's mother. I was my wife's hus band and grandchild at the same time And as the husband of a person's grand mother ia his grandfather, I was my own grandfather. " The Pope and Brazil. it is stated in Rome that the relatio a between the Vatican and the Brazilian government are so strained that a rup ture is imminent. The pope has inti mated that he will excommunicate Pres ident Peixito, his cabinet, and the mem bers of congress, unless measures ar taken to renew the former relations be rween church and state in Brazil. Uranri Army Troubles. The white members decline to permit negroes to join their posts, according to an order promulgated at the last National encamp ment, and in preference will secede from the order. Cupid Defeats Science. Dr. Lucy M. Hall, the famous woman physician and surgeon, of Brooklyn, N. iY.f has just been wedded to Robert JGeorge Brown, of New York.
