GENERAL LOCAL. An Important Session of the Park Commissioners. Meeting: of the United County Democracy. A Small Boy Sets Fire to the Curtains at His Residence. Unemployed Laborers To Be Assisted. A Verdict of One Per Cent. Rendered by a Jury. The Park Commissioners met last night in regular session, in the Mayor's office, Hon. H. T. Hazard in the chair and Messrs. Dr. Bryant and S. C. Hub bell present, (ieorge Fellers, who has been making an effort to procure work for the unemployed of the city in the parks, was in attendance. Mayor Hazard stated that Abbot Kin ney had offered to donate 00,000 valu able trees to the commission, including several thousand Monterey cypress, free on board the cars at Santa Monica, Twenty thousand of these trees, it was stated, are in boxes, ready for setting out. On motion, of Commissioner Hub bell, the offer was accepted with thanks, and the Superintendent will be sent j down to Santa Monica to select such i trees as can he utilized in the parks,, George Fellers made a lengthy plea for his scheme of furnishing the unem ployed With work in the parks, and stated that he had received 310 applica tions for work, 175 of which were from married, men, and recommended, among other things, the establishment of a free employment agency. After some discussion of the matter, Mr. Hubbell suggested that if the Park Commissioners would go out for a day or two they might perhaps do something toward raising money toward keeping deserving unemployed men at work in the parks, and he moved that a com mittee be appointed for that purpose. Dr. Bryant asked to he excused from serving on such a committee, saying his time is fully occupied. Mayor Hazard thought a public meet ing would be a good idea, but Mr. Hub bell insisted that there was nothing like personal application to bring out sub scriptions. . It waß Anally decided to authorize the Mayor to appoint a committee of promi nent citizens to meet with him at his office tonight, to perfect arrangement* for a thorough canvass of the city for subscriptions to the fund for furnishing work in the parks to the unemployed, and the newspapers were requested to give all the assistance in their power in the way of bringing the matter to the attention of the public. Mayor Hazard has appointed the follow ing as the committee, who are requested to meet promptly at his office this even ing at* o'clock: Ex-Mayor W. H. Work man, E. F. Spence, E. A. Forrester, J. B. Lankershim, Dr. M. Hagan, T. A. Lewis, M. S. Baker, Joseph Mesmer, William Lacy, .1. Frankentield, L. N. Breed, Tom Goss, J. F. Humphreys, George H*BonebraJAß,..J> M. Griffith,"T. E. Rowan, J. G. Estudillo, H. Jevne. J*. M. Meredith, A. H. Denker, J. C. Ellis, H. Jay Hanchette, William A. Spauld ing, Sheriff Aguirre, E. E. Bowles, C. H. Dunsmoor, E. C. Cleveland, F. P. Kelley, Freeman G. Teed and J. C. Rob inson. A communication waH read from W. H. Avery, offering to sell the city a site for a park, on East Second and Georgia streets, for $5,000, which was received and placed on file. Mayor Hazard stated that C. J.Ellis and others interested in St. James park were thinking about donating that park to the city, and Dr. Bryant stated that I ex-Mayor W. H. Workman would also I give four acres for park purposes on Boyle Heights. The pay-roll for the parks during the month, amounting to $1,811.10, was ap proved, as follows: Westlake park, $592.35; East Los Angeles park, $541.50; Prospect park, $170.50; nursery, $100; Sixth-street park, $110; Plaza, $38; Klysian park, $240.75. Aejoumed. COUNTY DEMOCRACY. Judge Dupuy Elected To the Presidency Last Night. A meeting of the "United County De mocracy" was held last evening at the rooms of the Iroquois Club on First street. Alxmt twenty-live members were present. The president, J. B. Lankershim, was not present, and Judge Clarke, of Pomona, was requested to oc cupy the chair. Martin Marsh acted as secretary. Several members of the organization expressed themselves as noc a little dis satisfied at the way its interests had been neglected by some of the officers and by those who had been most active in its original forming. It was stated by a member that Mr. Lankershim . was too busy to attend the meetings of the organization and wished to resign. The office of president was thereupon de clared vacant and the club proceeded to elect a new presiding officer in the per son of Judge J. R. Dupuy. On taking the chair the judge ex plained that he felt some embarrass ment at accepting the place under the circumstances, as Mr. Lankershim had not sent in a formal resignation, but he thought the matter could he satisfactorily explained to him. The reason why he was willing to accept the place was that he wanted to see something done and a decision reached promptly as to whether this club should live or not. If there was need for such an organization and work for it to do, he was ready to take hold, and he expected to see the others do the same. Mr. Collins moved that when the organization adjourned it should be till next Thursday evening, at which time they should assemble in the Iroquois hall, and listen to the reports of the various committees, especially that on constitution and by laws. The motion was carried. Judge Clarke, of Pomona, was called upon, and made a stirring speech, and the meeting then adjourned. HE GETS ONE PER CENT. That is the Way the Jury Measured His Reputation. The case of Francisco Montijo against Santiago Corrillojwas disposed of by a jury in Judge Clark's conrt yesterday. The plaintiff wanted $25,000 ,for slander because the defendant, as he alleged', THE LOS ANGELES HERALD: SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 29, 1890. had chargetl him with being one of a gang that had robbed the house of Corrillo. After hearing all the testi mony and deliberating for quit* a long time, the jury brought in a verdict of $250, not sufficient to carry the costs and just one per cent, of what he asked for. FOR THE ORPHANS. The Baseball Game Promises to be a Success. The sale of tickets for the baseball game between the police and constables tomorrow, of which the proceeds will be devoted to the cause of the orphaned children of the city, is exceeding the ex pectations of the most sanguine, and should it continue in the same ratio to day a considerable sum will be netted. The players have been practicing almost daily of late, and a very strong amateur game may be confidently expected. The services of Goldie, the Los Angeles' shortstop, have been secured as umpire, while the teams are as follows. CONSTABLES. rOI.ICE Dixon Catcher Dugan Rosers Pitcher: Fowlc Joney First Base Farmer saud5 aud Second Base., Craig lenlmore Third Base Gilbert Carlisle Shortstop Ingram I Hnt ; Left Field Henslev Roland Center Field Vignes dine Right Field Williams The above list is, however, subject to alteration, the police nine having an nounced that in all probability their team will be strengthened in one or two points. The cup which is to lie pre sented to the victorious team was on exhibition in Fred Linde's show-window yesterday, and was much admired. • i • . THE CURTAINS BURNED. A Little Boy Sets Them Afire With a Lighted Candle. At 6:45 o'clock yesterday evening an alarm was rung in from box 12 for a small blaze at the residence of J. B. Terry, the Main-street grocer, No. 1716 South Hill street. The department re sponded, but its services were fortun ately not required, as the tire was ex tinguished before its arrival on the scene. The little 4-year-old son of Mr. Terry, while carrying a lighted candle irt the front room, accidentally brushed against one of the lace window curtains, which became ignited from the flame of the candle and flared up in a startling manner.- Beyond the loss of the cur tains, however, no damage ensued. STOLEN GOODS. Two Men Arrested on Charges of Petit Larceny. Shortly after 8 o'clock last night Ar thur Seals was arrested by Detective Bosqui, on Commercial street, on a war rant charging him with petit larceny. He was taken to the city jail. Beals is alleged to have stolen a watch and some jewelry. Ramon Lopez, a Mexican, was arrested by Officers Levericii and Bosqui, last night, on Requena street, and when taken to the police station was booked for petit larceny. He had about 100 pounds of lead piping and sheets when arrested, for which he was unable to ac count. A few nights ago he was locked up on suspicion of having stolen two sacks full of glass bottles, but he swore to having dug them out of the sand in tjie river bed, when taken into court, airrt was discharged. ATHLETIC NOTES. A Ten-Round Sparring Contest—A Country Run. About three hundred members of the Los Angeles Athletic Club assembled in the gymnasium of that institution last night to witness a ten-round set-to be tween Billy Smith and Young Noble, a couple of clever local lightweights. Joe Soto refereed the bout, which was a very tame and bloodless affair. Neither of the men did any hard Jor effective hitting. Young Noble had much the best of the contest, and in the last two rounds put in some very lively hitting. A few members of the I.os Angeles Athletic Club will meet members from the East Side at the dub rooms on Sun day morning, and throw off at 7 o'clock sharp for the run to Santa Monica.
