For some time past the firm of Kiefer & Co., the wholesale liquor dealers, have been missing wines and liquors from their store, No. 324 North Main street, but, strange to say, not the slightest clue to the thief or thieves could be ob tained, although all sorts of traps were laid for their detection. Yesterday morning, however, one of the clerks in their employ, named John Silvers, called at the store about 6 o'clock to get his duster, as he was going for a drive. On entering he was surprised to smell a strong odor of cognac. He discovered on investigation that a barrel of fine French brandy had been syphoned and that the brandy was overflowing from a demijohn upon the floor. At the same time he heard a noise as of some one running in the cellar below, and he at once raised an alarm. Officers Haw ley, Sanchez and Sergeant Jeffries were soon on the spot, but no trace of the burglars could be found and the chase was given up. Mr. Kiefer was informed of the mysterious affair and at nine o'clock he called upon Chief Glass, who accompanied him in person to the store. A thorough investigation was made of the premises, but the mystery still re mained unsolved. Finally the Chief wandered into the barl>er shop of H. Chanaron, an old Frenchman, next door, access being gained through the rear of the premises, and concealed be hind a number of cardboard signs, a door was discovered. This was unlocked and found to ojien into a roomy cupboard under the stairway of the Abbott block, and inside were , found a number of cigar boxes, demi jrjhna and an assortment of bottled ' liquids which Mr. Kiefer at once Iden tified as his. Chanaron and his assis tant, A. J. Falder, were questioned by the Chief, but both denied all knowl edge of the morning's burglary. The Chief then instructed Officer Hawley to keep the barbers under surveillance, and he and Mr. Kiefer drove up town to obtain search-warrants for the residences of the two barbers. Justices Austin. Lockwood and Savage were not to lie found, but finally Judge McKinley was found in church, and the documents were obtained. A Bearch of Chanaron's house, No. 290 Macy street, disclosed THE LOS ANGELES HERALD: MONDAY MORNING, MARCH 31, 1890. the fact that lie bad about $2,000 worth of i-iyrrtiM, wines and liquors concealed therein, in addition to the valuable in-I Btallment at the barber shop, and thin was taken up to the police station | as evidence, the patrol wagon being loaded up twice with the plunder. In the meantime Detectives Auble. Bowler and Bosqui were dispatched to arrest the barbers, who were locked up in the city jail. Nothing was found at Falder's residence, No. 117 North Olive street, but he is supposed to be an accessory after the fact. It was discovered that an old trap door in the rear hallway, which led to Kiefer's cellar, had been unscrewed and access obtained in this manner, and a screw-driver was found behind the door of Chanaron's shop, j still damp from the sweat of his hands. | When in the city jail Chanaron told a } long yarn about having received the j stuff 'from Max Fuerkanip, a former driver for Kiel'er, who committed suicide I in the San Francisco bay several months | ago, but it is stated that some of the i cigars recovered from his house have only been received as samples by Kie'fer Cc Co. within the past fifteen days. It has been ascertained that Chanaron recently sold 3,000 cigars to a dealer on Kuhrts street, near San Fer nando street. CHURCH NOTES. Topics Discussed in Various Pulpits Yesterday. Rev. G. H. Some Important Telegraphic Corres- : pondence on the Subject. At a meeting of the Board of Direct-! ore of the Chamber of Commerce held last week, the secretary of the chamber was instructed to telegraph to Uopre tentative Vandover the protest of that body against the tariff bill! recommended by the ways and means committee, and now pending before the House, in which the tariff on sugar is reduced. On Fri day Mr. Patton sent a telegram setting forth the opposition ol the peopleol this section to tlie measure. The next day he received in reply a message by wire from Representative Vandever in which he announced that he had already en tered a protest to the proposed reduc tion, basing it on the statement that the bill would practically destroy an infant industry of this section—the manufac ture of sugar from the beet. ! S. 0„ (Graduate of Medical Department Victoria College, Ontario, Canada, In 1807, and member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Canada, since 188 C.) By His Hot Air Medicated Inhalations nnd his COMPOUND OXYGEN TREATMENT. Probably no system of practice ever employed lias been so universally successful as that in troduced hy Dr. Williams for the cure of Catarrh, Throat Diseases, Bronchitis, Asthma and Con sumption. CATARRH. Catarrh is often regarded by the patient as a cold In the head, and he often expresses his astonishment at his remarkable tendency to contract fresh cold. Indeed he declares'that he is scarcely free from one cold before he takes another, and he is always exceedingly careful; it is also a matter of surprise to him that the cold always seems to settle in the head and throat. At times many of the symptoms of catarrh seem to abate, and the patient is led to hope that the disease is about to wear off; but an other class of symptoms soon appear and he learns to his horror, that instead of recovery from the disease, it is somewhat changed in its character and has extended to the throat. A sense of weariness is sometimes felt in reading, speaking or singing; hoarseness at times occurs, a sensation of dryness is felt in the throat, or it appears that some foreign substance, as, for instance, a hair, obstructed the throat; there becomes a sense of languor and fatigue; the breath lessens on a little exertion, a short, hacking cough, a peculiar sound in clearing the throat, a feeling as though there was not room enough in the chest to these and other symptoms occur after the disease hus made considerable progress. Then it is a time when consumption is about to begin its dreadful work. Up to this time the press of the disease may have been slow and the patient may, in expressing his confident hope that it will "wear off," declare that he has had the catarrh for years and has not seemed to become much worse, and trusts that he will "by and by" recover. Hut this delusion is the grand error which has peopled our cemeteries with con sumptive forms, as all forms of catarrh end finally in consumption. Every case of catarrh Is curable when prop erly treated Eastern visitors and invalids should avail themselves of the opportunity of being Cured before they return home. Those who desire to consult me in regard to their cases had better call at the office for an examination, but if impossible to visit the of&afi personally can write for list of questions and circular, both of which will be sent free of charge.
