DAGWORTH DISCOURSES
ON A VARIETY OF INTERESTING
SPORTING MATTERS.
The Mess the Baseball Business Is In—A
Lot of Newsy Notes About Horses.
Other Interesting Gossip.
The winter series of baseball games are
just as far away as ever, as far as Los
Angeles is concerned. The necessary
teams are in Southern California, but as
yet no suitable ground has been ob
tained. The Temple-street grounds are
out of the question. They are not one
half large enough. It was folly to ever
construct such a ground. The
Los Angeles baseball enthusiasts
are clamoring for ball. The opening
game has been announced time after
time, only to be postponed from week to
week, until everybody has become dis
gusted. For some inexplicable reason
the baseball business has invariably
been mismanaged. The present out
look for the national game in this city is
very gloomy, indeed. It might also be
stated that the chance for Los Angeles
to be admitted into the California
League for the year 1891 is very slim.
It is not necessary to any longer mince
matters, and something will have to be
done at once by the admirers of the na
tional game in this city.

The carload of trotters that were
shipped from Abdallah park, Gynttai
ana, Kentucky, can now be scon at the
Agricultural park. They are a
choice lot. H. S. Schultz, a horse- j
man of prominence in Kentucky, i
came to Los Angeles in charge. Yester
day the writer made a hurried inspec
tion of the newcomers. Dr. K. D. Wise
owns four of them, viz: Bonnie June,
by Simmons-Bonnie Wilkes, 2:2%;
Adelaide Simmons, by Simmons-Ade
laide, 2:18; Adelaide McGregor, by
Bonny McGregor-Adelaide; and Nevada,
2:31)2, by Simmons, dam by Smuggler.
These are fashionably bred and no mis
take. Mr. Wilson will also winter sev
eral of his own horses in Los Angeles,
including Greenleaf, 2:22k'; West
Wilkes, 2:284; Blackfield, and a couple
of weanlings by Simmons. West Wilkes
is a symmetrical black stallion. He is a
grand looking son of Simmons, although
his size would prejudice him with some
breeders. Mr. Wilson is expected here
in a few weeks, and it is among the
probabilities that he will remove his
breeding farm from Kentucky to Los
Angeles county. The horse reporter
will describe the trotters at the park at
some future date.
Last Friday 1 attended the races at
Goronado. The track is a surprisingly
good one, and the location is not excelled
by any track in the United States.
Mr. Babeock displayed admirable
judgment in selecting such a beautiful
spot for a race track. The day's sport
was quite fair. Naicho B. won tho big
handicap hands down. Raindrop was
the favorite in the betting, but the son
of Wanderer-Flower Girl showed that he
was not a bad weight packer. By the
way, the old veteran, John Treat,
started in the race, but he was never in
the hunt after the half mile had been
negotiated. The old horse has seen his
best day. Gambo knocked out the talent
In the five-eighthsjmile heat race, beat
ing Ida Glenn rather handily in
straight heats. Gambo alsc ran in the
half-mile dash on the same afternoon.
He came under the wire first, but was
disqualified for fouling Triumph near
the finish. The decision of the judges
was questioned in many quarters. It
was rough on the Los Angeles contingent,
who had played Gambo to a man.
A writer in Clark's Horse Review has
prepared a table of celebrated trotters
who once upon a time sold for an insig
nificant sum. Here is the list:

Many valuable horses have been im
ported to California in the past year.
The Breeder and Sportsman says: " Mr.
E. F. Thayer of Riverside has been in
the neighborhood of San Francisco for
two weeks or more, looking for a couple
of stallions, and has finally purchased
from A. W. Foster of San Rafael the
standard horse Rafael !)215, by Fallis
4781, dam Stockton Maid, (dam of Old
Nick 2:23) by Chieftan 721. The gen
tleman has also bought from A. H. He
cox, the 4-year-old pacing stallion Harry
H., by John Sevenoaks (son of Nutwood
(100), dam Jane McLain (dam of Jim
Mulvenna 2:27 3 4) by Budd Doble 3704.
These two well-bred horses will be taken
south in the course of a few weeks, and
next year will make the season at River
side.
The Breeder and Sportsman, to hand,
contains a cut of the Pacific coast cham
pion stallion cup presented to Mr. Ho
bart in honor of Stamboul's record of
2:11. The San Joaquin valley as
sociation also intend to pre
sent to Mr. Hohart an elegant
gold medal set with diamonds. It
was over the track of this association
that Stamboul got his present mark.
The Breeder and Sportsman concludes
an highly eulogistic article as follows:
"It is to be regretted that the rain
prevented the further education of the
great stallion's record, as there can be
no question in the minds of any who
have seen him lower his record this
year, but what with more work he could
easily have beaten iS'elson's 2:10 3 4.
Whether Mr. Hobartwill send the stall
ion back east or not is still a query.
There has been a great deal of talk in
that direction, and many horsemen are
confidently predicting that Stamboul
will be seen on the eastern circuit next
year. Mr. Ilobart himself is very non
committal, and it maybe several months
before he ultimately determines whether
the horse will be trotted any more or
not. In an interview with Mr. llickok
shortly after the horse made his present
record, that, well known driver remarked
that theie was no horse on earth that
could beat Stamboul a race of
three heats in live, and that if he
could have had a trial on a kite-shaped
track with the stallion, that he feels
convinced he could have reduced the
present record of Maud S. Such posi
tive assurance, coming from a man oi
Mr. Hickok's experience, is surely
worthy of great consideration, and Mr.
Goldsmith is equally emphatic in stat
ing that the horse would have done
better if the rain had kept oft' for a week
longer. There is not a horseman on the
Pacific coast but what is not willing to
pin his faith to Stamboul as against any
of the great eastern cracks, and we sin
cerely trust that Mr. Hobart will allow
.Stamboul to be trotted next year, so

that the people of the eastern states
may see what a great horse he really is."
Staraboul was bred in Los Angeles
county,by L.J.Rose, and is one of many
celebrated horses bred in this county.

The Pacific Coast Field Trial club's
eighth annual held trials take place at
Bakersfieid on January 19th.
T. H. Williams has sold Rinfax and
Glenlivet to Palo Alto, and next season
will have only a small stable, which
will include Tycoon, Brownidle, a two
year old brother to Carmen, and a two
year old by Falsetto from Galanthis, a
sister to Falsetto.
Ab Stemler, who has been in town for
several days, says that be expects to get
several more well-bred mares for the
Shippee farm in a few weeks, and there
is a possibility of Mr. Shippee purchas
ing a stallion if he finds one to suit him.
Brock Hetiernan, whoso ably handled
Tycoon last season, was in "town last
week. He says that the chestnut geld
ing is shaping up better than ever, and
expects to' have him in better trim than
anyone has yet seen him. He is also
rather sweet on the yearling brother to
Carmen. Dagworth.
Mis. Geo. P. Smoote. a highly cultivated
"id estimable lady of Prcscott, Ark., writes
underdatcof April 22,89: "During the sum
mer of ISS7 my eyes became inflamed, and
my Ktomaph and liver hopelessly disordered.
Nothing I ate agreed with me. 1 tookchron
ii diarrhoea, and for some time my life was
despaired of by my family. Tho leading phy
sicians nf the country were consulted, hut
the modietnes administered by them never
did mo any permanent good, and I lingered
between life and death, the latter being pre
ferable to th -xgnnles I was enduring. In
May, 1888, I became disgusted with physi
cians and their medicines. I dropped them
all and depended solely on Swift's Speeilic
(S. 8. S.), a few bottles of which made me
perincntly well—well from then until now."
It Builds up Old People.
My mother who is a very old lady, was
physically broken down. The use of Swift's
Specific (9. S. S.) has entirely restored her to
health.
