An Old Story Which I 9 Unfortunately a Fact—An Attempt to Steal a Pocket book on a Pasadena Train. A youth named Charles Johnson ap peared before Judge Smith, in depart ment one of tliesuperiorcouit yesterday, |to receive sentence upon his conviction of the crime of grand larceny. On Jan i vary 24th, last, he was detected in the act of abstracting a pocketbook from the | dress of Mrs. R. B. Young, a passenger jon the 4 o'clock train of the Terminal railway company to Pasadena, at the I Downey-avenue depot. The lady's DOB j band promptly arrested the youth, and held him until the arrival of a police ' man, to whom he was turned over. In the meantime Johnson attempted to square matters with his captor by re turning the stolen pocketbook, but without success. The evidence against the youthful pickpocket was so strong as to leave j him without any defense, consequently | he entered his plea of guilty as charged, ! after being held to answer by Justice ! Owens, in the superior court." Yester day morning, on being asked tbe usual I question by the court if he had anything [to say before sentence was passed upon I him, Johnson stated that he was ren dered insaue by hunger, and stole the purse in desperation. He was going to Pasadena to see an old friend, and ask him for employment on his orange grove, spending his last cent for a ticket. While on board the train, he noticed [ the lady's pocket book protruding from her dress, and the temptation was too strong io resist. He appealed to the court fer mercy, as this was his first offense, and he would never so transgress ; again. Judge Smith, in passing sentence, said j that this was the old, old story retold. ' When a criminal is detected in" his evil ! work, he professes repentance and re ] solves to do better. But history teaches |us that in a majority of cases the reso lution does not Jast long. When at lib erty the old path is trod again. There is no excuse for a young man being I broke in this country, or any other J place, unless the misfortune is brought about by flood, fire or sickness. And when a person is hungry he can find food by calling at almost any house. Only a man with a bad heart and vicious habits will steal rather than beg. It I was thereupon ordered that the defend ant, Charles Johnson, be imprisoned in the penitentiary at Folsom for the period of one year. NEW SUITS. Legal Documents Which Were Filed on Yesterday.
