Some Reading (That Will Prove Inter esting to Young Mothers—How to 'Guard Against the Disease. Croup is the terror of young mothers, especially during the winter months, as it is then most prevalent. To post them concerning the cause, first symp toms, treatment and how to prevent it, is the object of this article. The origin of croup is a common cold. Children are subject to taking cold very easily, and croup is almost dure to fol low. The first symptom of croup is hoarseness; it is a peculiar hoarseness, easily recognized and once heard al ways remembered. Usually a day or two before the attack the child becomes hoarse, and gradually shows symptoms of having taken cold, and this is where the mistake is usually made. The mother thinking her child has just taken cold gives it no especial attention tintil awakened in the night by the vio lent coughing of the child, finds it has tbe croup, and remembers it has had a cold or been hoarse for a day or two. Such circumstances often occur, and in many cases the mother has nothing in the house that will relieve it, and may be several miles from a physician or drug store. You can well imagine the situation and her distress. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse or shows symptoms of having taken cold; if Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is freely given from that time on, all tendency to croup will disappear and all danger be avoided. The remedy prevents fully ten thousand cases of croup every year. It is the main reli ance with many mothers throughout the Western States and Territories; they have learned its value and how to use it, and in those families croup is seldom known because it is always prevented. During the coming week a deter mined effort will be made to pull the chamber of commerce out of its present difficulties. A committee on financial reorganization has been appointed, con sisting of Eugene Germain, W. E. Hughes and Victor Ponet, who will work with the acting secretary in bring ing about a better state of affairs. If the chamber could obtain 100 new mem bers it would be placed in a position to be entirely self-supporting, and could wipe out a great part of its present debt. These members, it is believed, are to be had for the asking, if the work of can vassing the city can be thoroughly and systematically performed. To bring the matter before the general public the committee has issued a con vincing statement in the form of a cir cular to be sent to all persons whose names are suggested as eligible candi dates for membership. The chamber has done excellent work for the advance ment of this city and county and de serves the heartiest support. It will be a discredit to the people of Los Angeles if a generous response is not made to its request for support. A Husband's Mistake.
