CREED HAYMOND NOT RETIRKD.
The report telegraphed to New York
some days since from this city, says the
San Francisco Call, to the effect that
Creed Haymond, of the Southern Pacific
law department, had been retired at the
request of C. P. Huntington, cannot be
confirmed at Fourth and Townsend
streets. While high officials of the com
pany are not willing to pronounce the
statement absolutely false, yet they seem
inclined to seriously doubt its authen
ticity. One thing is certain, the change
has not been officially announced, and
Vice-President Stubbs said yesterday
that if Mr. Haymond had left the service
of the company it was a matter of news
to him. "If he does not resume his
duties at the head of our law department
upon his return from Europe." contin
ued Mr. Stubbs, "it will be, in my opin
ion, a retirement at his own request,
and not due in any degree to outside
influence."
SOUTHERN PACIFIC MARCH EARNINGS,
The Southern Pacific company's state
ment of earnings and operating expenses
for March compares favorably with the
statement for the same month last year.
On the Pacific system the gross earnings
were $2,721,093, a%d on the Atlantic
$988,346, a total of $3,709,439, while for
March, 1890, the total earnings of the
two systems was $3,561,781. The oper
ating expenses for March of this year
were less on the Pacific system than for
the same month in 1890, the figures be
ing $1,717,375. as compared with $1,932,
--420. On the Atlantic system, doubtless
due to the washouts, the reverse was
the case. For March, 1891, they
amounted to $774,812, and for March,
1890, to $759,142. The total operating
expenses for the month this year were
$2,492,189 and last year $2,681,562.
For the first quarter of the current
year the gross earnings were $10,874,999,
and for the same quarter last year $9,
--693,543, a gain of $1,181,456. the oper
ating expenses for the first quarter this
year amounted to $7,375,167, and for
that period last year to $7,743,107, a re
duction amounting to $367,940. This
last sum added to the gain in gross earn
ings shows that the company is over
$1,500,000 ahead "on the first quarter of
1891 as compared with the first quarter
of 1890.
NOTES.
Gustav Lansing, secretary and con
troller of the Southern Pacific, has gone

In fuller explanation of the causes for
the employment of trainmen, A. N.
Towne has stated that it is not
only to prevent misappropriation of
cash receipts, but because on the heavy
trains now run it is found impossible
for one man to attend to the duties of
conductor and ticket collector too. The
train agents are to have entire charge of
the collection both of tickets and fares.
He denied that freight conductors were
to be placed under bonds. They do not
collect for freight at vray stations or
elsewhere, and only handle the trifling
sums paid by the few oassengers
who are permitted to ride on freight
trains. •

so is only a part of the total cost.

Sneak War Upon Women.
The silent, social revolution by which
women are entering into fields of labor
is heard from every now and 1 then in
some new quarter. The latest novelty
in the way of women's work has come
to the front in a curious way.
A large concern, manufacturers of
baking power, has the advantage over
powerful opposition from the fact that
the article it turns oat is actually pare
and free from drugs. The problem' was
how to impress this forcibly upon the
public mind. In the first place, a list
of all the ingredients iased was printed
upon every' package. This was very
well, but the company went a step fur
ther, and hit upon an original plan.
A number ot bright young women
were given a few lessons in chemistry,
and were taught a simple test which
wouldf reveal instantly and beyond
question the presence of ammonia and
alum (drugs commonly used in the
adulteration of baking powders). These
young women were then sent out
through the country, going from house
to house, instructing housewives how to
find out whether their baking powder
was pure or not.
It appears that a baking powder mas
querading as "absolutely pure" is really
adulterated with ammonia, (rather a
profitable business, by the way, yield
ing to the owners about $1,000,000 per
year profit.) and when the presence of
the "concealed ammonia" is clearly
shown by the tests of the lady canvass
ers, the good housewife is Btartled, for
no woman would use any article of food
containing ammonia if she knew it.
The vials of wrath of the "absolutely
pure" baking powder company are then
opened. They do not deny the use of
ammonia, but they attack the charact
ers of the young women. In the city
where they happen to be working the
press teems with paid reading notices
warning people against them, suggesting
that they are "sneak thieves," or
"tramps," or that "grocers are in
censed," etc., or that their tests are
"tricks," or they are "trying to de
fraud," or anything else to prevent
housekeepers from seeing them.
Now, this is the last country in the
world where a powerful corporation
even can hope to win in a sneak war on
women who are honestly working for an
honest living.
Instead of scaring them out of busi
ness by calling them bad names, they
have only roused tbe girls' grit, and
now they are in the fight to stay with
all the sympathy of the public solidly
with them.—[New York Recorder.

The old idea was that facial eruptions weie

of decreasing, actually creates moro erup

that the stomach, the blood creating power,

Joy's. Mrs. C. D. Stuart, of 400 Hayes BL,
