"And also as to whether or not the minutes of the board, before you came into office, show any orders for the pay ment of moneys out of the treasury ex- I cept in cases where no written demand is presented. "And also as to whether the allow ance book as kept at that time shows any orders of the board for the payment of moneys." He also addressed a similar request to County Auditor Howe, asking him to furnish the association with "a full list of all books of accounts you fotind in the auditor's office when you went into office, the date when the first entry was made in them, the accounts that are kept in them, tbe conditionof Collectors Bullis' and Piatt's, as well as Collector Whitney's accounts." THE TROY DYE EPISODE. Some Reminiscences of a Notable Murder Case. G. A. McElfresh, during a call at the Herald offipe yesterday, in referring to the Dye killing, spoke circum stances of tbe detection and punish ment of Troy Dye for the murder of Tullis at Sacramento some years ago. Troy Dye, who was no relation to Joe Dye, took his two confederates to a point opposite the island upon which Tullis lived, and took them back to Sacramento. The detection of the crime was a fine piece of detective work. The murderers thought that they had left no trace of their work, as they went to the island in a new .boat, constructed for the purpose in the oasement under Troy Dye's house, and destroyed the boat immediately afterward ; but a piece of the boat was found, consisting of new, unpainted plank. One of the boards had a lot oi figures in pencil upon one side. This piece was taken to a lumber yard, where one of the men identified the figures as his own, and remembered selling the plank to Dye. This was the first clue discovered, and led to the ultimate conviction of Dye and Anderson, Lawson, the other ac complice, escaping. THE SUPERVISORS. Routine Business Done at the Meeting Yesterday. The board of supervisors met yester day and granted the petition of property owners interested in the vacating of streets in the Linden subdivision of the Childs' tract, rancho San Rafael. The report of the viewers of the new Tomlinson road was received and filed, a deed by Fred Bluemle, giving right of way to the county, being accepted and ordered recorded. The petition of property owners for the establishment of a road known as the Cheesbro private road, was granted, the same having been under considera tion for several weeks. The road overseer of El Monte district was instructed to'have removed all ob structions from the old Monterey pass road, that the same might be put in proper condition. Upon petition of residents of Chautau qua school and road district, the name of the district was changed to Redondo. In the matter of retaining a supervis ing architect for the new courthouse now in construction, a report was re ceived from the special committee re commending that the firm of Curlett & Eisen be retained at a cost of $200 per montb instead of the present architect, who receives an allowance of $20 per day. The report was adopted and the board adjourned to meet again at 10 a. m. today. Asphalt on Main Street. The Asphalt Paving company are now repairing Main street, between First and Third streets, under authorization by the council.' These blocks were laid, only a few. years ago, under the Scherer contract, which cannot now be enforced, for reasons heretofore discussed. The new work and patching is being laid with Kern county asphalt, and in ap pearance presents a strong contrast to the old work, which has gradually softened and run into the gutters to a depth in some places of over three inches. It is unfortunate the property owners could not arrive at some com promise with the city by which the whole street could be repaved under guarantees from some responsible com- Eany, instead of the unsightly patches ere and there. It would pay to have a fine, new and uniform pavement in the better business that follows such an im provement. The property owners from First to Court have for some time been considering the policy and profit of low ering the present granite blocks and covering them with an asphalt or bituminous surface. Owners of prop erty and tenants both understand and concede that the roughness and noise of the granite keeps people away who drive and sends trade to streets with smoother pavements. This is the com mon experience in other cities. . « ! Changing Defeat to Victory. The genius of Sheridan at Winchester changed defeat to victory. So when feeble adversaries in the shape of inefficient remedies fail to stay the progress of that obstinate and malignant foe, malaria, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters turns the tide—drives the enemy back. Nothing in materia medtca, or out of it, compares with this as an opponent of every form of malarial dis ease, chills and fever, dumb ague, bilious re mittent and ague cake—it matters not—one and all are extirpated by the Bitters. To take a course of tbe great preparative ln advance of the malarial season, is to buckle on, as it were, an armor of proof which defies attack. So forti fied, so protected, you shall be scatheless. Re member, too, that the Bitters is an eradicator of liver complaint, constipation, rheumatism, kid ney complaints and dyspepsia. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castoria. ONTARIO. The high school proposition is the principal issue now engaging tho atten tion of our citizens. Saturday's Ob server devotes considerable space to the matter, and adduces a list of apparently invincible arguments in its favor. Rich ard Gird and other landholders who own mud. of the taxable property in the proposed district, favor the scheme, and it is believed that, with the exception of those directly identified with the Chalfey college, the proposition will meet with general favor when submitted to a vote of the people. Chaffev college ia a de nominational institution, a branch of the University of Southern California, and is now doing preparatory or high school work. In such capacity this in stitution is justly reearded as an in fringement upon the American system of free education. Ontarions want a college in reality, and if the management persists in pursuing its present course tailure is inevitable. The editor of the Record having been engaged at various times as an instructor in Charley college, and being connected with the institution by a denominational link, has shown a disposition to oppose the high school movement, but so far has used enough discretion not to take a radical stand in opposition to popular sentiment. The proposed high school district includes the districts of Ontario, San Antonio, Mountain View, Chi.io, Cncamonga, Eti wanda and Hermosa. Dr. C. R. Sykes last week sold his ten acre tract on Sixth street and Campro avenue to a Mr. Hatch for $4500. The growers of Cucamonga are form ing a co-operative union for the purpose of handling their deciduous fruit crop. As the enterprise is based on sound economic principles, its success is as sured. Other districts should emulate their example. Bordwell & Fassett are doubling the capacity of their evaporating plant at North Ontario. When completed, the building will have a length of 120 feet. A mail route will be opened between Ontario and North Ontario July Ist. The fashionable ladies' corrective tonic is Aneostura Bitters, the world renowned tonic of Dr. J. G. B. Siegert & Sons. "CATARRH r Throat Diseases, Bronchitis, Asthma and Consumption, Are being successfully treated by M. HILTON WILLIAMS, M. D. M. O.i P. S. 0., 137 8. Broadway, l.os Angeles, Cal. By his Aerean system of practice, which con sists ot proper Medicated Inhalations and the COMPOUND OXYUEN TREATMENT. BRONCHITIS. CONSUMPTION. BRONCHITIS. Bronchitis is a disease of the mucous mem brane of the air passage, and is one of the most common of the pulmonary affections. Chronlo bronchitis more often appears later in vie. When a cold settles on the lungs the disease either ends in bronchitis or pneumonia. 11 U ends in bronchitis it usually passes off as a cola • on the chest, and still tho patient does not feel entirely well. He feels tired and languid, and is Incapable of taking his usual amount of exercise, and experiences a shortness of breath with more or less warmth in the pa.rns of the hands. Soon after this a cough appears, ac companied by an expectoration of thick mu cous, followed by a hectic flush, loss of flesh and Btrength, and night sweats continue, when the patient assumes all the appearance of hay ing a genuine case of consumption. But this is simply catarrh of thelungsor chronic bron- Cl The patient usually dies from exhaustion and suffocation, being unable to expectorate the mucous which accumulates in the passage leading to the lungs, which ln some cases is sticky and small ln quantity, but more com monly copious, of a light straw or yellowish green. Dry Bronchitis-This disease, the very oppo site of the above, 1b a very common affection. Very many people, who regard themselves aa quite healthy, are today under its influence, and are slowly but surely becoming the vic tims of this treacherous complaint. This la the most insidious of all pulmonary diseases. There may st first be a slight, hacking cough and an expectoration of a bluish white mu cous. And herein lies the danger. This mu cous, inhabiting the air cells of the lungs, be ing difficult to raise, after a time becomes solidified, permanently obstructing portions of the lungs, causing shortness of breath and a feeling of oppression on the chest, particularly after meals or on slight exertion. After a time the cough becomes more severe and comes on in paroxysms, and as the shortness of breath In creases it almost assumes the character of asthma The mucous membrane also be comes more and more thickened, whish arises from the frequent fresh oolds, and the patient at last becomes fully aware of the terrible changes that have taken place and the inevit able results that are to follow. Without courage and perseverance nothing ia curable, but with these, aided with our Medi cated Inhalations and Compound Oxygen Treatment, Bronchitis can be cured even after the lungs are extensively diseased.
