12 NEW YORK FASHIONS I The Latest Modes in the Metropolis. I Fannie Field Writes of Fabrics r and Fashions. I |;Mews Which Will Be Fonnd Interest ing by the Women. m- Materials Which Are Now in Vogue. Novelties Seen at the Great Stores. Hints About Dresses and Trimmings. f ■ Special correspondence to the Herald. New York, July 11th. The monotony of the sheath skirt, although trimmed in a variety of ways, S has brought about a desire for change, n which finds expression in a skirt with v . some fullness in front and at the hips, | greatly to the delight of stout persons, ' t to whom the entire absence of gathers i?| jvaa extremely unbecoming. An at ; £ tempt has also been made to . revive the Princesse style, but judg ing from present indications, it will not prove very successful, as a large ' proportion of expensive costumes have been made sheath skirt; either with tbe long coat effect, round basques cut into squares, or short basques slightly pointed I back and front; edged with Frence lace ; or chiffon ruffles. These pointed basques are very much in favor for China and India silk dresses, and between two lace ruffles on tbe skirt, one of colored chiffon may be placed in harmony with the principle I color* in the material. The present fash ion of putting flounces or facings of col- L ored silk on half worn wool dresses, is \ an .economical one, and a ruffle around the skirt and basque, with new sleeves and collar, will change the whole ap pearance of a dress, if the combination is made with taste. Accordion plaited I frills of colored silk or chiffon, put un ■ der the tabs of a round basque (just showing from the outside), at the cuffs I and with a full plastron of the same, I will render even a plain black silk sty 1 | ish and effective. Dimities are more fashionable this season than ever; a leading Broadway house showing fifty-two different pat terns. Trimmed with white lace or col ored ribbon they make tbe daintiest and - freshest of morning toilets for Saratoga or Newport, and the very small doti or sprigs, are considered more recherche than larger designs. Stylish black nets show the whole surface' cov ered with small dots, resembling ordin ary veiling, and variety is given by nar row stripes a few inches apart. This material makes up beautifully over black or colored silk, and may be trimmed with ribbon or lace flounces; but the simplicity of the costume is best re tained by plain rows of ribbons. Nets, forty-eight inches wide and $5 per yard, and striped with gilt, are very hand some, every alternate stripe being of a different pattern, thus precluding any appearance of sameness. A beautiful novelty is a very sheer net in bow-knot designs scattered over a sparsely dotted surface, and made over a bright chame leon silk, the result is peculiarly charm jug. Blouse waists of dark blue polka dotted silk are very fashionable, both as an adjunct to outing costumes, and also for street wear. Plastrons, in dots and also in stripes, will be worn under light flannel or serge jackets, and no one but those well versed in fashionable decep tions would ever imagine but what the whole blouse was beneath. "Norfolk" waists greet us on all sides, and are in surah and changeable taffeta silk, linen, cambric or nainsook in great diversity of color, and look so cool and comfort able that their very utility renders them charming. The great popularity of these waists has given rise to an end less variety in belts, and adjustable clasps are also shown, in order that one may appear to possess a varied assort ment of this latest feminine van ity. Those of gilt with jeweled clasps, or of metal squares connected by delicate chains, are most expensive; but leather studded with nail heads, and black velvet ornamented with jet are also very popular. Long waists are still very fashionable, and in the suit department of Lord & Taylor, the new est costumes do not appear to indicate any change in this direction. m * * New tennis and yachting suits are in white, blue, pink or striped serge or flannel, generally made up with a very narrow skirt, and with or without a p jacket. A full blouse is indispensable, and Is usually of the same material with which the unit is trimmed, although it is not obligatory that, they should match. The prettiest tennis gaits are of white serge, with a deep facing of dark-blue polka dotted phalli, and sleeveless jacket with collar, . revers, pocket flap, cuffs and full blouse of cballi. These outfits are open to the I objection of being easily soiled, and : dark blue serge, trimmed with gut cord, I is much more serviceable, or a white aerge striped with blue, makes a pretty trimming on plain dark blue. In milli nery, the "Vaßßar-sailor" is about the -,■ only new departure, and in reality i is a variety of the sailor hat, having a ' crown an inch high and a broader brim. Here truly is a territory upon which even the young middle-aged dare not I* .intrude. Sometimes these hats are 'turned np at the back, but as a rule the f . trimming consists of a very large rosette f of white or colored chiffon, placed at the I aide, with an aigrette in the centre. A j, mixture of white and gilt is a beautiful garniture for evening, t Fannie Field. Bimmons Liver Regulator ia a most excellent aujetizing tonic—|Bam'l £. Pentz, Chap, to slßop of North Carolina. THE LOS ANGELES HERALD: SUNDAY MORNING, JULY 19, 1891. A Green Rose. A specimen of the natural cariosity, a green rose, is described in The American Garden as being in size equal to the La France or Bon Silene. It is very doable, being a rosette of fine leaflets of a faintly pinkish green hue, and consequently in conspicuous in appearance. The flower has a pleasant fragrance. Among so large and brilliantly colored a family as the rose this green member is hardly to be considered worthy of cultivation. It is, however, very interesting as a bo tanical specimen, for it is an excel lent example of the fact that our most prized flowers all depend upon their colors in being more than a mere mass of leaves, as this, besides a slight variation in shape and size, is the most that dis tinguished the petals of flowers.
