6 BARNITT AND SULLIVAN. AFTER SIX TEARS OF ENDURANCE THE MANAGER LEAVES. His Present Opinion of John—Thera Was a Little Difference a Week Ago, and Barnitt Decided That He Was Tired of the Big Man's Vagaries. Jack Barnitt gave his friends a sur prise Sunday night when he dropped down in San Francisco with the an nouncement that henceforth he would not travel with John L. Sullivan's the atrical show, says the San Francisco Ex aminer. Barnitt has been the manager of Sullivan for several years, and has watched over the noted pugilist in more ways than one during that time. "I've been John's friend," said Bar nitt last night, "'for many years. In fact, I met him first on a barge in the North river, when he came down from Boston to fight Flood. Matt Grace and Cleary and the others had fixed the thing so that Flood was to come out ahead, but when they saw John was in earnest they got excited, and Flood got knocked out before they knew it. They saw John was going to do the square thing by himselt, whatever they said, and you may be sure he did. "Well, after thst John had his other fights, and made an exhibition tour of the United States, and asked me to go over to England with him. Now you musn't think I'm going to say anything against John, because I won't. Some thing has occurred between us, and that's what you nor no other man would stand. It was all nonsense when the papers said he knocked two barkeepers in the head with my skull the other morning. The real facts are that there wae no violence displayed on either side. He uever raised his hand. "I asked john to come home because the hour was late, and we had words. But he never lifted a hand against me. I'll leave it to witnesses. But he said those things that no gentleman would stand. You wouldn't listen to them yourself. "VVell, I wailed two days and did my business just the same. But I was longing to be home. I've got a wife aud family in New York aud I'm tired of being on the road with this theatrical business. When I get home I shall etick to legitimate slugging and sports, because it pays me far better. "When 1 went up to Sacramento and met John, I simply called him into the Golden Eagle hotel and had a peaceful talk. I told him I couldn't stand the present circumstances any loneer, and after some parley we all signed a paper, by which John agreed to run the show himself and assume future responsibili ties. He paid me a bonus, and I shall start for tbe east in a few days, glad to be out of theatricals. "I don't want to talk about anything I may have endured iv the last few years, and I want the public to know that I am still the friend of John L. Sullivan. "If John will keep straight he's going to make his show a big success. There isn't a better manager in the world than John when he hasn't had whisky." DOES NOT LIKE AUSTRALIA. In the course of conversation Mr. Barnitt referred to Australia and said . '"Australia is a country that has suf fered from its bcom. I don't believe in a boom myself; I'd rather take things as they come. The people out there always say that they bet pounds where we bet dollars, but if they do, it means that we bet $1000 to every pound that they bet. They are sports in a small way. They will turn out to see a show, but they don't want to pay for it. Why. you can see a knockout three times a week in Sydney, if you want, at three or four different resorts, and all you have to pay is three crowns —sixty cents! — just think of it! And all the purse they put up is £25. When Choynski came over tor his international tight he could only raise $2000 for the purse. Why, that would make America sick. No; I tell you Australia is not in it, where we «re coucerned." YESTERDAY'S RAIN. It Extended as Far East as Indio—The Record. There was a slight ruin in the city yesterday afternoon, but later in the day the showers ceased and the sun shone brightly. During the downpour on Tuesday night, the City of Paris dry goods store was Hooded and the stock considerably damaged. Several other stores and private residences in the city were also damaged by the water, while the farmers, especially those iv the Ca hueuga, where the early vegetables are grown, reaped a rich benefit.
