SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RAILWAY yO/Los Angeles SANTA FE ROUTE. THE PEOPLE'S PARTY. Ratifying Weaver and Fields's Nomination. Marion Cannon, of Ventura, Makes a Speech. A Parade Followed by Speeches—Mr. Waldron on Free Coinage—The Would -Be Congressman Gives His Views. About three hundred voters of the People's party were in line laßt evening in the parade which preceded the ratifi cation of the nomination of Weaver and Field, 'ihe Btreets along the line of march were crowded with people, who greeted the paraders with considerable enthusiasm. The procession formed on North Main street, right resting on First atreet, pro ceeded aouth to Fifth street, Fifth to Spring, and on spring to the Plaza. It then countermarched down Main street to the old court house, where speeches were made from a large decorated float. FIRST DIVISION. W. L. Wolle, Grand Martha!. Aids—E. Carberry. George L. Monrovia, Comp ton, Norwalk, Clearwater and elsewhere. Tin no division. J. F. G-efnough, Assistant Marshal. Peoples' Pariy Clubs of Los Angeles City. FOURTH DIVISION. E. A. Reber. Assistant Martha]. Citizens. Among the features of the parade waa the float epoken of, which waß filled with men, women and children, who aang patriotic songe. Another float formed the pedestal for two figures of liberty, impersonated by two charming young girls. A broom brigade of young women attracted attention in the third division, gome of the bannera carried in the procession were aa follows I "Equal rights to all; special priviliges to none;" "The people aud not the dollar shall rule;" "Tax the incomee;" "Public ownership of telegraphs;" "Uncle Sam can build the canal himself;" "Evolu tion, not revolution;" "No Pinkertons in the People's party;" "We want the earth, for it is ours." At the old court house the first speak er was Chairman B. W. Batchelor o the county central committee. He said in part: "We met tonight to ratify the nomination of Weaver and Field. The firat ia an ex-federal and the eecond an ex-confederate. That means the union of the blue and gray. We demand the government of the country by the peo ple, not by the money powers. The re port of the fusion of the Democratic and People's parties by the lying dispatches of the Associated press ia falae. The Democrats in many places have en dorsed the People'a nominee. If that be fuaion we want it all over the United Statea. The next speech was by 8. A. Wal dron, who said that the only question in this campaign was how to regulate tbe purchasing power of the dollar, and the free coinage of eilver. "I want free and unlimited coinage of ailver aa a farmer, because England which cauaed a demonetization of ailver in the United Statee now buys our bullion for 90 centa on the dollar, coma it into rupees, and sella the dollar in India for 100 cents worth of wheat. Aa a result it has etimulated tbe growing of wheat in In dia, and our wheat liea mouldering in the warehouses of San Francisco. With unlimited coinage, England cannot buy her bullion here and will be compelled to buy her wheat and cotton from America." Marion Cannon of Ventura, the Peo ple'a party candidate for congreaa, said : "We are on the eve of the greateat rev olution ever witnessed. It may come through the ballot-box, but if it cornea not Boon through that medium, it will come through blood. Thia ia no idle talk It is the leaders' unanimous opin ion that reform mast be instituted now, or that the country will go to pieces. The storm is ready to burst, whenever congreßa shall refuse to give that relief for the reform of abuses and the repeal of bad lawß for which the nation craves. We are being robbed by trans portation companies every day, but I tell you that, in lees than three or four years the people shall own the Pacific railroad companies and ran them. [Cheera.] We that have built all those roada don't propose to be robbed much longer by the millionaire owners. Do not narrow thia fight down to a local issue and Bay that your congressman mnat come from Lob Angelea. Loa An gelea haa everything, and you ought to give the congressional seat to Ventura county." In reply to some questions about Weaver, Mr. Cannon said: "General Weaver will be here in Loa Angelea and will speak for himeelf." The meeting then dispersed. - What, Hoi Another Richmond. SOME CANDIDATES. Men Who Would like to Be Super- Since the people are getting on to the extravagant way the present board of supervisors have squandered nearly two million dollars yearly to run the county government, and that three of these gentlemen will step down and out this year, considerable speculation is going on as to whom their successors shall be. The courthouse gang feels aafe, as the late gerrymander has made it almost impossible to elect Democrats, conse quently there is a big rush from the g. o. p's camp for the Republican nom inatious. In the Fifth district the present in cumbent, Mr. Hubbard, would like to continue to serve the dear people. So would George L. Steams, of Garvanza, and W. W. Stockwell, of the east side. Oscar Macy, of the Eighth ward, is in the field, and in case of a split a pump kin roller oi Burbank would come in as a dark horse. On the Democratic side there ia the efficient councilman, Nickell, who haa hia eagle eye on the nomination; Mr. E. E. Burnett, of Pasadena, is spoken of; also that all-around good fellow, ex- Councilman Jim Hanley, of East Los Angelea. In the Fourth district, on the Repub lican side, the present incumbent, Mr. Davis, would sacrifice his time for four yeara longer at $5 a day. So would T. A. Fewis of Santa Monica. John A. Pyrtle, the genial real estate agent of thia city, is a possible candidate. On the Democratic side, Mr. H. L. Montgomery of Rivera is talked of, and the many friends of ex-Collector George Hinds of Wilmington are trying to get him to make the race. In the Second district, which is repre sented by Mr. Perry, and which was the only Democratic district in the county, was on the 2d day of last month gerry mandered by the board of supervisors in such a manner as to change the pol itical complexion from 100 Democratic majority to 425 Republican. They con eider the nomination in this district equivalent to an election, hence the many aspirants for the nomination, which are Dr. Kierulff of the board of education, C. E. Crowley of the board of education, ex-Councilman Schaffer, ex-Councilman R. E. Weirabing, A. W. Francieco and the present licenae col lector, Mr. Van Dorn. On the Democratic Bide thus far there ia only one aspirant; that ia ex-Coun cilman and Police Commissioner M. T. Collins. Mr. Collins ia not only an honeat and practical man, but a friend of public economy. The recent gerrymandering in thia district was done for a purpose, and the Herald will have more to say about it in tbe near future. In the First and Third districts there will be no election this year. THE DELEGATES. Men Who Will Nominate the Next Congrossman.
