REDONDO.
A Bonanza for F'lithetinen—Notes—Hotel
Arrival*.
Redondo Beach, Aug. 24.—0f the
many really good things that have been
claimed for this particular segment of
the Pacific coast, tbe fishing interest is
iast gaining a well-merited popularity.
Various species of the finny tribe, from
tbe cavernous depths of the old Pacific,
seem to converge into tbe deep canons
existing under the sea, in this part of
Santa Monica bay, and the fishermen
have discovered that no place along tbe
coast so sorely warrants a rich haul as
along Redondo Beach. Many seine fish
ermen follow the business along tbe
sands hereabouts, while a good many
fishing emacka go out several miles,
with trolling lines and gill nets, coming
in with ample reward for their arduous
labor. Yesterday Messrs. Bennett and
Edwards made fine hauls of mackerel,
having landed over 4600 pounds of large,
plump specimens of that beautiful fish.

LONG BEACH.
The Ninth to Break Camp Today—Per
sonal Matters.
Long Beach, Ang. 24.—Camp Butler
will be a thing oi the past tomorrow
morning at 11 o'clock, when the tents
will be struck. The Ninth regiment has
not been here as long aa the citizens had
anticipated, and it is with mutual regret
the boys leave. As a whole, the mem
bers of the regiment have behaved in a
gentlemanly manner. The citizens have
few complaints to make, although a
number of harmless jokes were perpe
trated. The blanket tossing wae, bow
ever, ai Captain Barry said, uneoldierly,
and besides was carried a little too fax
in the cases of the Chinamen.
This morning the Chinaman whose
tent of fancy goods was partly burned tbe

by a man with a white stripe down his
pants. It is very probable that he thus
endeavored to fix up a job on tbe boys,
so as to make good his loss.
This morning the men and officers
had tbeir last drill under Captain Bar
ry. They were formed, and were to
capture a supposed fort, some distance
north of the camp. Scouts were first
thrown out, then the skirmish line was
formed. After a number of volleys had
been fired, the regiment was formed and
attacked the fort. A number of the offi
cers were mounted, and entered into
the practice with vim.
The party returned to camp as a force
marching in a strange country. A line
of sentinels was thrown oat, and two
flanking parties next followed, after
which came the proper provisions
against surprise.
Captain Barry left on tbe 11 o'clock
tiain, and was escorted to the depot by
all of the officers. The gentleman car
ries with him tbe respect and confi
dence of the entire camp. He spoke
very complimentary of the regiment
while he was here.
Some 68 of the new guns arrived this
morning. They were distributed as fol
lows: Company A, 30; Company B,
12; Company C. 3; Company D, 5;
Company E, 6 ; Company F, 12.
Lieut. C. I. Lorbeer has directed the
shooting for the trophies. Company C
won the Long Beacb prize.
There were 19 men on the sick list
this morning, none of tbem serious.
During the battle this morning Sergt.
James D. Faris, of Company E, San
Bernardino, had a narrow escape. The
piece of metal back of the cartridge in
the gun was thrown out by the recoil
and cat through Faris's hat, narrowly
grazing his forehead.
A banquet will be given tonight to the
regimental officers by the citizens of
Long Beach.
A party from this place spent the aft
ernoon at Terminal island. Everybody
went in bathing and an enjoyable time
was spent, the features of the bath be
ing the swim of Mrs. W. H. Holmes, ac
companied by Miss Klokke, to the raft
two times. Miss Taylor and Miss De
Frees also swam to that point. Mr. Felix
Notman started with the first two ladies,
but in returning suddenly began to sink,
yelling for help. He was saved with
some difficulty. Those composing the
party were: Mr. and Mrs. Geo. P. Tay
lor, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Notman and two
children, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. De Frees,
Mr. Robert Depuy, Miss Klokke and
Miss Goleta Workman.

SANTA ANA.
A Shooting Scrape—Political Moves— Lo
cal Happenings.
Santa Ana, Aug. 24 —An interesting
shooting scrape occurred here yesterday
evening. The facta in the case, briefly
told, are these: Then has, for a long
time, been a fend existing between
James Moulin and Sam Fmley, two old
residents of thi9 place. V eaterday the
men met in Laramie's sample room, on
Main street, and Finley ordered Moulin
to leave the room, which the latter re
fused to do. Finley then drew his re
volver, and putting it against Monlin'a
breast, snapped it. bnt it failed to dis
charge. Moulin, meanwhile, drew his
pistol, and taking aim fired, the ball en
tering Finley's right cheek, just below
the eye and passed under the skin to
the back of the head, inflicting a painful
but not dangerous wound. Finleyagain
leveled his revolver and fired, hitting
Moulin in the right arm. Both men
clinched and a struggle ensued, during
which Finley secured Moulin's pistol,
and aB he was about to aim at the latter
Geo. Wilton, who had then entered the
saloon, Btruck Finley on the head with
a croquet mallet, stunning him. At
this juncture City Marshal Nichols and
Night Watch Morgan entered and sep
arated the men and arrested them.
Moulin was taken to Dr. Ball's office and
Finley to a drug store, where their
wounds were dressed. Both men after
wards succeeded in securing bail. Mou
lin will appear for trial on Friday, and
Findley will appear in the same' court
on Saturday morning.

until the polls close on election day.

WILL SMITH'S STATEMENT.
The Southern Pacific Detective Va-
Justly Attacked.
Interest in the Collis train robbery
has not yet subsided, and centers now
in the coming preliminary examination
of George Sontag. The Vißalia Times
has the following interview in its Mon
day even-ng issue:
Detective Will Smith arrived in town
today at 11 o'clock:, after a long and
fruitless chase of two weeks among the
Sierras for Chris Evans and John Son
tag. Notwithstanding the numerous
derogatory allusions to Mr. Smith in the
press throughout the state, concerning
his first encounter with the outlaws, he
came in this morning smiling, and in as
dead earnest as ever. The activity he
has t-hown, and his willingness to un
dergo great hardship in trying to trace
the criminals, have satisfied the people
generally that, without doubt, Smith
has been unjustly attacked.
In an interview with him today a
Times reporter found Mr. Smith a very
pleasant, communicative gentleman,
ready to resent, of course, all blatant
insinuations as to hia bravery, but har
boring no malice against those who, not
knowing him, had been ignorantly mis
led into the hue and cry concerning him.
"I have not tried to defend myself,"
remarked the detective; "at least not
very much, for I have been too busy out
among the trees and rocks of the moun
tains. Besides, my real friends know me
well enough. This incident has shown
to me very plainly who my friends are.
I expect to make a statement at the pre
liminary examination of George Sontag
in Fresno next Saturday that will set me
right before those fellows that have been
maligning me."
Mr. Smith declares that Sheriff Cun
ningham never suggested that a posse
be sent to surround the Evans house
that Friday afternoon. Neither did any
other of the detectives or officers then
present make any mention of a posse,
so far as he ever heard. He went with
Deputy Witty to the home of Evans, he
said, solely for the purpose of getting
the trunk of George Sontag, who was
already in jail. He had never seen
either John Sontag or Chris Evanß be
fore he met them bo unexpectedly at his
house.
Detective Smith says be believes
Evans and Sontag will never part with
tbeir shotguns for any rifles. They have
carried them in all their robberies, and
they will cling to them on the ground of
good luck. He ia satisfied now tbat the
bandits have not crossed the range; that
they are hidden away among the rocks
and brush ; that the story of Seymour,
the sheriff of San Bernardino, cannot be
true.
