EARLY HANGING BEES. SOME RECOLLECTIONS OF DEPUTY SHERIFF O. W. ROBIMSON. Ad Octogenerlan Who I« BtlU Young and Vigorous — "Lynching* Which Occurred Here More Than Forty Year* Ago. One of the oldest citizens in Southern California, and likewise a pioneer in Los Angeles county, is G. W. Robin son. Mr. Robinson is 83 yeara of age, and he insists that be is still a young and vigorous man. In 1851 Mr. Robin son was a deputy sheriff of this county, George Burrill at the time being sheriff. Mr. Robinson read the other day of some of tbe early "hanging beeß" in this county, but as none of them went back to his time he has given the Her ald some interesting data some of the vigilance committees that be ran across in his experience as an officer of thia county, forty-one years ago. The first two men hungin this county, be states, were Albertus and Reys, who' were strung up in 1851. They had mur dered two naturalists, one a German and the other a man named McCoy, who lived at Portsmouth, O. They had sailed south from San Francisco in the Sea Bird, and had landed at San Diego, hey were making their way overland rom San Diego to Los Angeles. The two naturalists were gathering insects and journeying slowly toward this city. Albertus and Reys came across them. Murder and robbery was de termined upon. The two wretches cut clubs from a willow tree, and coming upon the two unsuspecting naturalists unexpectedly, they fell upon them and beat their brains out. They robbed the bodies of $270, and both murderers came to Los Angeles with the spoils. They got to boasting of what they had done while drunk, and Deputy Sheriff Robinson and a posse of ten men com menced to search for the bodies. The men had been murdered on the Jabon eria ranch. The bodies bad been ly ing uncovered for five days, and the coyotes had carried them off some dis tance. The two murderers having con fessed, were lynched. The next lynching occurred during the same year of 1851. An Indian killed a Yucaibe Indian in the vineyard of Don Augustine Machado. He was sent iuto eternity with the aid of a noose properly adjusted in the hands of a vigilance committee. Mr. Robinson caught tbe Indian a mile and a half from town, beastly drunk. The next party to hang was also an Indian. He killed a Mexican in 1851, and suffered in consequence at the hands of a vigilance committee. The next who was leading man at a hanging bee was Sijerano Sandevotjar, who in 1851 killed Gen. Bean at San Gabriel. The next killing that took place was in the same year on the west end of Court street. Alvitre killed Pickney, and was hung. He was sent into eter nity, though, according to the forms of law. On the same day the Spanish popula tion took a murderer named Dave Brown out of jail and strung him up. They thought that too much consideration was being shown American murderers, and they resented it by organizing a mob and lynching Brown. He had al ready been convicted of murder, but had appealed his case to the supreme court. The leader of the mob on that day is still alive, and lives here in Lob Angeles. These are a few of the little affairs that Deputy Sheriff Robinson noted during hia official existence here in Los Angelea back in '51. THE CIRCUS LICENSE MATTER. A Committee or Investigation Which Is Very Unlet. It ia just two weeks ago today that a committee of three waa appointed by the council to investigate the delin quencies of the city tax collector in fail ing to collect $500 from Sells Bros.' circua for the laat day it showed in thia city. The city lost $500 through thia failure, and, furthermore, no license was collected from the Bide show, as provided by law. Thia committee, which waa appointed with a great flash of trumpets and a loud call for investigation, has not made a single, eolitary move yet. It will pass into history aa a deliberative committee. If the councilmen and officials who are mixed up in thia job think that the people have forgotten about it they are mistaken. It ia still in their minds, and the fact that the city lost $500 by the job is to be recollected. If that investigation amounts to any thing, or if it ia going to amount to anything,' it ia about time the matter the committee waa appointed to look into, was opened up. By tbe way, the total amount the city ia out by that license business is $580. The $500 should have been charged for the second day's performance of tbe cir cus, and $20 a day each for the two aide shows.
