A little waif, supposed to be the child Lou Baxter, a drunken woman of ill- Tepnte, which waa found a few weeks ago in <t vacant room, almost famished, -while the woman was in jail for drunk ennep?, was cared for by the proprietreee of the Pi tenix hotel till John Field, a farmer near the city, took it to bring up. Low. Baxter refused to have the child adopted. Today, a woman from San Bernardino, Cal., arrived and claimed the child. She ia a widow (Mrs. Gable), aud gave the child to Lou Baxter, who was tuen a eervant girl, to bring to relatives in Phoenix, as she wbb poor and sick. She is now barely able to walk around. The little boy, a year and a half old, recognized his mother immediately. HAWAIIAN SUGAR. No Front iv Raising; It at the Present Prices. San Fbancisco, Sept. 15.—The stock holders of the Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar company held a meeting to day to discuss the financial affaire of the corporation. Claus Spreckles addressed the meeting, and in response to queries said it would not pay the company to raise a big crop of sugar at the present market rates. Some oi the plantations, he said, would have saved money had they burned their mills a year ago. He stated that the outlook at tbe islands wae not favorable. Nonaction was taken on the matter of levying an assessment, and tbetaeeting adjourned, leaving af fairs in the hands of the directors. SIDNEY BELL'S CRIMES. He Now Stands Convicted of Four Grave Offenses. San Fhancihco, Sept. 15.—Sidney Bell, convicted of the murder of Samuel Jacobeou, and also awaiting Eentence ior robbing John Curley. a tailor,' had a trial before Judge Murphy, today, on the charges of stabbing and wounding Edward Crome, <lter having held up and robbed the latter, on November 2d. No defense was made, and the jury found Bell guilty, after a trial lasting but half an hour. Following this, Bell was tried for holding up and robbing Peter Robeon, November IC, 1890, and was found guilty in less time than on the preceding charge. He will be sentenced on Saturday. # Fire at Prescott. PBEScoir, Ariz , Sept. 15. —Fire started this afternoon, from an explosion ol gas oline, in F. B. Jacob's assay office, Mon tezuma street, and before it could be gotten under control destroyed $15,000 to $20,000 worth oi property. There was'uo water ia the mains, and the engineer was absent from the engine house, so that it was half an hour before water could be obtained, and the fire then threatened an entire block ot fine residences, but the city pumps were i started just in time to save them. The ' principal losses are B. S. Weaver and John Riibee, $5000 each. The residences of Mayor Howard and Patrick Banett were destroyed; aleo several smaller buildings. A man, name not known, was pretty badly burned. Locomotive Engineers. Cincinnati, Sept. 15.—The locomotive firemen at their sessiou this morning, discussed the question of the federation of all railway employee. The general feeling among tbe delegates appears to be in favor of putting the federation into effective practice, but no vote was reached today. The question was re ferred to a committee of five with in structions to report to the convention. Another topic of discussion was the pro ject to build a house for permanent headquarters. This was defeated. Chinese Notified to Register. San Francisco, Sept. 15.— J. C. Quinn, collector of internal revenue and ex-of ficio Chinese registration officer, yester day issued notice to the entire Chinese quarter of San Francisco, that all Chi ninese residents must comply with the requirements of the iegistration law be fore May sth, next, under penalty of ar rest and subsequent deportation from the United States.
