2 LETTER BAG. A Suggestion. 'Editors Herald: Lob Angeles has enjoyed each season some beautiful en tertainments given in that blessed name of charity. The beautiful flowers and Bweet odors of the flower festivals. The ■warm coloring and artistic groupings of the orange carnivals, the kirmesa and the literary carnival. This season is a mostjprooitious one for material to give a grand authors' and actors' carnival. There is plenty of talent iv this wonder ful city of ours and many fair women and brave men to take part iv an enter tainment with 6uch a commendable ob ject as charity. The pavilion could be artistically modeled into features pleas ing to the eye, including Shakespeare's Birthplace, Longfellow's Wayside lun, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Dickens' Old Curi osity Shop, George Eliot's Mill on the Floss, Mrs. Hosrner's Under the Hoilv, or Shristmas at Hopeton House, The Old Kentucky Home, Shaudon Hells, Holidays at tiie Grange, Mrs. Warden s House on the Marsh, Jules Verne's Underground City and many others might bo suggested equally familiar and inviting. A section could be devoted to an attractive exhibit showing the pro gress of printing aud bookmaking arts from primitive days down to the pres ent times. And the dear little children should not be missed, but extra pains taken to make them have a good time. Let the Brownies bo illustrated iv tableaux. -rEsops fables also, snd Alice in Wonder land, or Louise Alentt's Little Men and Little Women, and Kate TannattWood's Six Little Rebels, while Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tides, or Burnett's Gio ramie and Fauntleroy will furnish plenty of BUDjects to be thoroughly en joyed by tbem. Then in Ihe present yeat there are so many subjects which, if taken, would make magnificent tableaux; illustrate Irving'B Voyage of Columbus, Gen. Lew Wallace's Fair God, Balboa and the Pa cific, Ponce de Leon and the Mississippi. Then our amateur Thespians, how they could revel in character and per haps excel those marvelous actors in costumes of Joe Jefferson as Rip Van Winkle, Ellen Terry as Ophelia, Edwin Booth as IsgO, Henry Irviua; as Hamlet, Fanny Davenport as Cleopatra, Roland Reed in Cheek, Frank Daniels aa Little Pick Alexander Salvini as d'Arts.*.'n&n, Clara Morris ac Camille, Margaret Mather as Juliet, Julia Marlowe as Par thema, Fred Ward as Virginias, Francis Wilson as The Merry Monarch, Richard Mansfield as Bean Brummel, and so on through a list of a hundred famous characters played by as famous artists. A portion of these suggestions are taken from a statement made by some young authors nnd actors who have iv Charge an entertainment. Hypocrisy. Editors Herald: There ia now be ing bawke I about the city circulars purporting to be iaaued by the Gospel Temperance union and the Citiziins' Law and Order league, each signed by the same persons, advocating in the name of morality and religion tbe elec tion of Mr. Tufts for mayor. No one appears to know the said persons, or to have seen tLie evidence of their author ity to act for said organizations and tell them how to vote. Now if Hr,y one de- Bires to vote tor Mr. Tuits as a Republi can or aa a man, personally, I know of no reason for bis not doing so, nor do I Bee any objection to any poison advo cating his election aa a Republican or as a man, but when it is sought to enlist tbe Christian re ligion in a crusade under tiie leader ship of a dealer in playing cards and gambling paraphernalia and a pat.'on of Sunday baseball, lor one, I object. The election ot Mr. Tufts will hardly cause the "removal of perilous Sabbath temp tations" bo long as the Tufts-Lyons baseball team continue their Sabbath desecration. So far as the defenses al ready secured are concerned, Mr. Rowan has pledged his word that the existing lawa shall be maintained and enforced, and no one that knows him doubts for a moment but that his pledge will be kept. To advocate the election of Mr. Tufts in the nßine of Christianity or religion is rank hypocrisy, and, if allowed to go unrebuked, will bring reproach upon the church. Fourth Warder. SPANISH INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL. The Preshytery ■ > .11<•..:■ . the New Buildings. The dedication of the new building of the Spanish Industrial school, estab lished by tbe Southern California pres bytery of the Preibyterlan church, located on Macy street, Boyle Heights, took pLtee yesturda- afternoon. Rev. Mr. Merwyn, who was for miny years a missionary in South America, conducted the exercises and delivered the dedica tory address. There was quite a large number of Spanish people present, and the address w.;is int!;e Spanish language. Judge Minoi jiade a few earnest and ap propriate remarks. There was also present quite a large attendance of Americans interested in the Spanish school. The institution was started iv 1884 aa n day school, under the superin tendence ef Miss Ida M. Boone, and the scholars have increased from three to about 30. It is now turned into an ed ucational and industrial school. Tbe new building is fitted up with dormitory accommodations for 11 girls, and the accessories are ample for the comfort of the pupils. The school lias been and is to be supported by the volutary contii butions ol the members of tbe Presby terian church. They have bought the lot and put up the building. The main tenance of the school will he partly met by the proceeds of the yearly scholar ships, of which there are eleven to be taken by those interested in the work. Three of these have already been sub scribed, and the rest, will be distributed amongst the churches. A ITlhic ktecovom Mpeer.il Alphonce Hemphling, oi Summit township, Butler county, petin., made an affidavit that bis twelve-year-old son. wlo hid had st. Vitus: Dane; for twelve years, lost ins speech, was completely cured t.f cr using three bottles ol Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervine, and also re covered his speech. Thousands testify to Won derful cures from using if tor nervous diseases, arspepsta,n< rv»us debiiitv, dullness, eonfi sion of mind, headache, etc. Four doses ol this Nervine cured Mrs. W. In applying a match to some tobacco in a pipe, there waa a small explosion, when he inhaled the flames. A portion of his clothing caught on fire aud burned bim about the body.
