News Notes from the Crown of the Val ley—The Wharf at Hedondo Kendy for Business—News from Various Points. Pasadena, Dec. 4.—The improvements which have been recently made in the arroyo near the foot of Colorado street are such that one who had not visited the spot for some time would scarcely recognize the place. Mr. J. Scoville, one of Pasadena's most progressive citizens, is the gentleman who has been carrying on these improvements. A large Btone dam and club house of the same material are among the additions that have been added. Upon tbe biuff across the arroyo ex tensive work has been carried on for the past two years. The top of the hill has been cut down and leveled, while sev eral wagon roads have been constructed at large expense. It is understood that it is Mr. Se ville's intention to erect upon this spot one of the finest residences in this sec tion of tbe state. w It is suggested that the proposed world's fair painting be taken from this elevation, and there certainly could not be a more desiiable view obtained. Hotel Arrivals., Redondo Beach, Dsc. -I.—The won derful change now going on in the as pect of the surrounding country is phenomenal and worthy of note. The outlook about Redondo Beach is sud denly changed from a view of dull, bar ren fields and uplands to a complete landscape of the brightest emerald; and the remarkable growth of plants and shrubbery, especially among the acacia and eucalyptus plantations, is quite remarkable. A number of acacia trees planted early in the year have been tested during the past 10 days, and a growth o! G inches in height during that period has been ascertained. The discharge of the schooner Hal cyon's cargo is proceeding iv good order over Redondo wharf today. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. ilracewell re turned from Pomona last evening with saddened hearts for the loss ol their Only Kight to Tell. The Rev. Marl; (Juy Pearse, the eminent Eng lish divine, writes; Bhdfobd PLACE, Russell Jquahk. j London, Dee. 10, I»BS.j "I think it only right that I should tell you of how much u«c I find Allcoek's Porous Plasters in my family aud amoung those to whom I have recommended them, I find them a very breaetplate against colds and coughs." young bady, Grover Cleveland Brace well, who died at Pomona Friday, December 2d, from a severe attack of pneumonia. Sakta Ana, Dec. 4.—Tie warm rays of tbe sun have been greatly enjoyed to day, for it hah been nearly a week eince Old Sol has deigned to snow his face. The rain appears to be over, and farm ers in this section are feeling in excel lent spirits, for plowing and sowing can now be commenced. The coining sea son bids fair to be o.ie of the best this section has ever enjoyed. Forty teams will tomorrow commence plowing on the great San Joaquin ranch, and 250, --000 acres will be sown to barley. The crop on this vast ranch was a light one this neason, but Mr. Irvine, the man ager, informed a Herald representative today that the prospects for this season were favorable to a heavy crop. A MISERABLE STREET, Fourth street is the business thor oughfare of this city, and in the sum mer time it is in a very creditable con dition. Just now it is an eyesore to every resident of this progressive town. It is v veritable mudbole, and the worst feature of all is, that there seems to be no way of remedying it. Our city trus tees, however, should take pity on the suffering mortals who are compelled to travel over it, aud have the street paved or tbe mud carted away. DEATH 01" .1. D. WALKER. Citizens of this city were shocked Saturday morning to learn of the death of J. D. Walker, who resides between Santa Ana and Tuetin. He has been troubled with stomach disease for some time, but nothing serious was thought of it until yesterday, when he returned from Los Angeles and was suddenly taken very ill. A physician was sum moned and everything possible done to relieve bis suffering, but without avail, aa he passed away this morning. Mr. Walker was one of the most influ ential citizens of Orange county and highly respected by all who knew him. He was one of the leaders of the De mocracy in the last campaign and won many friends. He leaves a wife aud two children to mourn his loss. The date for the funeral has not been an nounced. OUR NEW COUNTY OFFICERS. Nearly all of the newly-sleeted officers have filed their bonds, and are now ready to aesume their duties as cus todians of the interests of Orange county. In the county clerk's office, D. T. Brock has made" W. A. Beckett his chief deputy, and the appointment gives universal satifaction. Win. Bow ers, our county recorder, has appointed Mr. Adams as his chief aid, and also Ed. Alexander, Both men will make com petent assistants. Of tbe appointments made by the other county officers, we have as yet learned nothing, but it is safe to say all will be men of sterling worth, and also well qualified. brevities. Tom Morris is training every day now and feels confident that he can win the race againt Quirk on Saturday r ext. Mor ris is favorite here among betting men, but as yet few bets have been made. A lively interest is manifested in the event, and it is safe to say a large crowd will witness the go. Should Morris de feat Quirk lie will go to England, where lie will try and get a race with some fast man in the land of the heath. H. A. Peabody, the popular editor and managsr of the Daily Evening Blade, was severely burned iaet night about the head, face aud arms by the explo sion of a gasoline stove. The injury, though painful, is not serious, and we hope in a few days to see him again at his post of duty. Mrs. S. H. Purcell isvisiting friends in San Bernardino. The Santa Ana Gun club returned this morning from a two days' hunt in the marshes southwest of town. Ducks were what the hunters were after, but they report them as being scarce. J. H. Joueß, tbe proprietor of the Brunewick, came nearly going "out of sight" in the mud, and had to be extricated by his fellow Nimrodl. The Herald representative here is at a loss to understand why so many Los Angeles . couples come here to eecure marriage licenses. During last month there were five licenses issued to Lob Angeles county people, who wished to try mar ried life. The bachelors and benedicts intend to play a game of baseball on Christmas day in this city, using the new style dismond, having four bases and doing away with the short-stop. Two tramps who were wanted by the authorities at Anaheim were arrested in this city last night by Marshal Nich ols and sent ba(k to Anaheim. The board of supervisors meet tomor row and the city trustees meet tomor row night. The street cars now make regular trips to the Southern Pacific depot. Long Beacu, Dec. 4. —By the time this is published the wharf will abut in the sea about half its proposed length, and the Ist of February shouid usher in a completed structure. From different reports and rumors which have reached us here, our neighbors' wharves at Re dondo and Santa Monica canon hare suffered severely from the effectß of the late storm, whilst we of this favored place have been exempt, and practically know nothing about any storm except such bb we have read of in ttie daily papers. The blessed rain was about all that was needed to complete our happiness, for now we know that the magnificent surrounding country tributary to Long Beach will yield untold wealth. Lemons grown here are pronounced by experts to be of fine flavor and alto gether superior to those grown farther inland, while our lvelsey plums are the ouly ones thought to be worthy to rep resent this great county at the California exhibit now in Chicago. There is an important laud deal under consideration, which, if it comes to a head, means a beet sugar factory, a transfer of 10,000 acres on the Cerritos and Alamilas ranches, and a colony of Eeveral hundred families from Michigan.
