' - PI ° th ' 18C |- , , , ,pf Gallant Officer Fallen, y t,h more than ordinary pain wo an e death of Brig. Geo: Wm. E. Jones, mty, who fell in the engagement near Staunton on Sunday last. He. was a graduate ef West Poiht, and for several years a Lieuten ant hi the U. S. Army. Just before the break ing out of the war he was elected Captain of the volunteer company knuwn.ua the Washington Mounted Rifles, and led them to the field among the first that rallied under the Stars and Bars. From that day to the day of hie death, be was rarely absent from his post, and participated m some of the hardest fought battles of this great struggle. As his biography will doubtless begiven, we will not pretend to give more at present than the melancholy fact of his |eath. The ValLty Fight. We have bad but'mengre accounts from tbe fight near Stounton. The Lynchburg Virginian of the 7th says our disasters have been exagge rated. The death of Gen. Jones was the great est duster. We learn from * private source that he at firtft repulsed the enemy, and in the attempt to follow it up one Regt. gave way, when Jones was killed, and our forces repulsed in turn. The enemy doubtless have possession' of Staunton, and we have not sufficient force at pntsent to keep them back. Tbe Casualties. We copy from tbe Lynchburg Virginian the lists of casualties in the 48th and 50th Virginia Regiments, but they will be found very inaccurate. We have corrected the epeffing of many of the names, but many are I doubtless still wrong. I _ ♦ ♦ »—i ——— gts» The Board of Examining Surgeons closed its session in this place on Tuesday evening, and despatched a large number of cases- We have lived in the world a good while, but we neyer before saw at one time as many persons who woro halt or lame, or otherwise afflicted.— We doubt whether there wasever as big a-crow* of "impotent folk" around the pool of Siloam I at any one time. So many canes were out for | the occasion, that hoop-poles are bound to be scarce. > . -, i g9*Abo«t 500 Yankee cavalry came thro* Pound Gap a few days ago, a few of whom were killed, and a number of horses and equipments were taken atid appropriated by Morgan's men. Morgan and his command j aro now probably within the enemy's lines, but where, vre will leave the enemy to.find 1 out, as far as we are concerned.
