I 317 Lackawanna Ave, WHEAT RECOVERS LOST GROUND The Bull Pool Made lis Strength Ap parent in September. CORN HAS BEEN EVEN MORE ACTIVE December Advances 3 Cents Partly on Account of the Upward Hush of September--Provisions Unusunlly Strongs-Liverpool Shows a Decline nt the Beginning. ChicnKO, Auff. 23. Nearly all of yes terday's decline In the grain pits was recovered today. The bull pool made Its strength npparent In September wheat and advanced that option live cents per bushel, while December ad vanced three cents, partly on account of tho upward rush of September, but principally on account of the bullish ness of the day's news. Corn was even more active than wheat nnd closed at a l'fcaUc. advance. Oats advanced "fcc. Provisions were unusually strong and showed advances ranking from 12V6 to 30 cents at the close. How strong a hold the bull clique had on September wheat was shown soon nfter the opening today. The opening was decidedly strong, though this was due more to the bullish nature of the early news than to "squeezing." Sep tember was quoted at the opening at from 93' to 93, compared with yes terday's closing price of 91 and touched 91 almost Immediately after. It dropped back to 92V& and then It was that the spurs were put In. Offerings of September ceased almost altogether, the bull crowd apparently sure of their position, "standing pat" and the price jumped and kept jumping until about 11 o'clock It had reached 97 cents. Traders In December had not been Idle In the meantime. That option started at 91a91',i, an advance of a',4 from yesteiday, touched 92 cents, went back to 90, then went on the run to 94. There was a slight interval of weak ness about an hour from the opening, when tho New York market yielded, but the slight decline occasioned was quickly recovered. Liverpool showed a decline to' begin with, from 3d. to 3d., but recovered part of that later. The market was extremely nervous to the end. Fluc tuations of Mc per bushel In Septem ber between trades were frequent, and December made jumps and plunges of Uc. without apparent reason beyond attempts of brokers to buy or sell more than 10,000 bushels at a time. The con tinental markets were weak. Paris closed at a decline in wheat of from 1 to 2 per bushel and Antwerp was 1 franc down, or the equivalent of EVi per bushel. Liverpool closed 2d. per cental lower for the day on spot, and from 2 to 2 down on futures. Clos ing prices here were: September, 96; December, 93U. m INSANE MAN WITH A RAZOR. Attacked nnd Almost Killed u Civil Kngiiiccr in His Ollicc. nurllngton, N. J., Aug. 2.7. Charles Wallace, colored, made a murderous as sault on Harry Haines, a popular young civil enslncer of this city, tonlsht. Wal lace walked Into the ofllce where Haines was nt woik and, grabbing the young man, pinioned him In the chair In which he was Bitting and drew a razor across his throat Seeing the flashing steel Haines instinctively drew his head away from tho man. and thus saved his life, the razor Inflicting a deep though not serious wound. Wallaco ran from tho offlco and up Broad street with a crowd In close pur suit. Ho was captured at High street and locked up. Wallnce is about BO years old and was liberated from the State Insane Asylum somo eighteen months ago, and has since then been running at large In the city, much to tho people's discomfort. Tho Insane man Is a veteran of the lato war, where exposure to the sun unbal anced his mind. While incarcerated In the asylum a movement war. started to securo his wife a pension, and the Jury Inquired into his In&anlty. This, together with tho legal papers associated with the proceedings, gave tho man's dlsor dftcd brain a grievance ugainst anyone tdtling nt a desk In an open office. He lng nttracted by the legal aspect of Blr Hnlnes no doubt precipitated the at tack. THREATENED WITH BLINDNESS. Jinx .llnrotzek's Widow to Undergo nn Opcrntion for Cntnrnct. New York, Aug. 25.-Mme. Maretzek, widow of Max Slarotzek, the pianist, who died a few months ago, is threatened with total blindness. She is living at the Jlar etzek homestead In Pleasant Plains, a. I., and Is upward of 70 years of age. Tho slgfat of ono of her cys has al ready failed and she will undergo an operation next week with the hope of scvlrtg tho sight of tho other. Remember we are closing out our Wall Paper stock at less thau half price. J. SCOTT INGLIS. 419 LACKA. AVE. THE MARKETS. Wall Stroot Hcviow Now York, Auk. 25. The weekly crop report of tho agricultural department at Washington was tho depressing lnllurnco In tho stock market today, us it was a stimulating lnflucnco upon tho prices ot wheat and corn. Tho opinion expressed In tho government report of unfavorable condition of the corn crop and of lmpatrad yield from the spring wheat crop was of too serious Import to tho grain carrying railroads not to have a marked effect on tho value. There were various times dur ing the day when a struggle wa made against the prevalent depression and; when pricej seemed embarked upon an upward course, but the fact would re cur tha,t a large part of the long ad vanco In tho price of tho grain carrying roads has been predicted upon tho abund ant grain crop which It was expocted was to be moved and prices would turn down wards again. Tho cases where prices were aboyo yesterday's closing, at any time during tho day are exceptional, and thoso whero they remained above at tho cloto are still fewer. Tho fact that set tlement day on tho London exchange de veloped no short Interest or covering de mand was to somo extent disappointing to tho bulls. The heaviness In all depart ments of tho London exchange, growing out of the evidence of serious disaffection on tho northwest frontier of tho Indian emplro exercised somo sympathetic Influ ence In the local market. Commission house buying was on a much reduced scalo and there wero a lull of the activity on tho part of tho large moneyed Inter ests whlcih have been prominent In mar ket recently. The sales fell to a total of llttlo moro than one-third of that shown by tho dealing on some days of re cent period of activity. Tho extreme dullness at tho decline Indicated a healthy tone of the market, the liquidation at no time being "heavy and tho resistance at a given point being very firm. Tho mar ket enjoyed an occasional rally under tho leadership of somo individual Mock which was Influenced by a development especially affecting It. The total sales were 292,250 shares.
