The disarmament cohference has convened in Geneva to discuss ways and means by which European diplo mats may induce the United States to scrap a few more ships, disband a few more soldiers, loan a few more millions to their respective countries with, which to build bigger and better ships and add more men to their armies. From past performances their efforts are going to be satisfactory to Europe and Asia, and to the pacific element of America. Silvery tongued diplomats have done with words what no nation has ever done with guns, they have sunk our navy and disband ed our army. It is true we have never had to fight a first class power in a stand up fight, but those we have fought haven’t been able to sink so many ships as have the diplomats. If they keep on they are going to have poor old Uncle Sam in a position whereby most any two by twice na tion can lick him, and won’t that be a sad day for most of us. TU~ *. i_ t. - i i --*^»*^*v wua uiese disarmament conferences is, the United States is the only nation than doesn’t attend with their fingers crossed, and is the only one that actually sinks any of her ships. The rest intend to when they get around to it, but the man in the street is beginning to wonder just when that will be. Some of our most efficient military and naval officers have taken retire ment before reaching the age limit, just to be able to tell the world in no uncertain terms what they think of the situation. We fear their telling will have no real effect, as the great Am erican people are so certain of their superiority over all the rest of the world that nothing short of a catas trophe will waken them from their dream of security and superiority. When that day comes it will probab ly be too late. Lessons so bitterly learned in 1898 and again in 1917-18 did not sink in, the war ended too quickly each time. But the sacrifice of those countless thousands of men who died of disease and ignorance seems a shameful waste. Why the Am erican people assume the attitude to wards the balance of the world that is apparent, we do not pretend to un derstand. It would seem that in the face of events now occurring in the Far East, where Japan attles despe rately against China’s aggression that ''' we would wake up. Poor Japan with her second largest army in the world r and her third largest navy, oppressed by that heartless country of China, her very life blood at stake, and at the mercy of China’s army of bandits.
