SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON] j
(By Rev. Charles E. Dunn ;
The Council in Jerusalem l
Lesson for September 13 th. Acts
15:22-29. j
Golden Text: Galatians 5:13. \
Paul, as our last lesson made
clear, was inspired of God to rigist
er his chief success with the Gen
tiles. Although Jewish to the
core, and anxious to bring his own
people to a saving knowledge of
Christ, he became, through force
of circumstances, the organizer of
Gentiie Christianty.
But his persistent, energetic la
bors among non-Jewish folk met
with stern opposition on the part
of Christian Jews who came down
to Antioch from Jerusalem and
argued that these Christian Gen
tiles must be circumcised and com
pelled to obey the Mosaic law.
Paul vehemently objected. With
powerful argument he insisted
upon the freedom of the Gentiles
from these (Hebrew bonds. Read

Alka-Seltzer. Alka-Seltzer, when
dissolved in water, contains an
analgesic, (Sodium Acetyl-Salicyl
ate). In addition, the alkalizing
agents in Alka-Seltzer help to re
lieve those everyday disor
ders associated with hyper
the flaming letter to the Gala
tions. This passionate utterance,'
which may be considered the corn
erstone of Paul’s thought, was
written as the fruit of high emo
tional tension at a time when the
apostle felt that he was fighting
with his back against the wall. I
Here he argues with more emphasis
than in any other letter on behalf
of his favorite doctrine of justifica- i
tion by faith. We are saved, he!
insists, not by the Jewish law, buti
by wholehearted tru$f in the sav-j
ing grace of Christ. "You how
ever, brethern,” he cries, in the
words of our Golden Text, "were
called to freedom.”
Our lesson tells us of the fam
ous conference held in Jerusalem
where Paul begged that the Gen
tiles might be granted this ree
dom. Fortunately he had an able
ally in Peter who related how God
had bestowed His Spirit on the
Gentile Cornelius and his family.
When both sides of the controversy;
had been presented, James, the
brother of Jesus, proposed an hon
orable compromise. The Gentiles,
he said, should be asked to observe
only four prohibitions required by
the Mosaic Law (see Acts 15:20).
This proposal was adopted, and its
provisions were embodied in a
calm reassuring letter.

GAS PEACH TREE BORES
FOR EFFECTIVE CONTROL
A paradichlorbenzene gas attack
s the most effectve weapon to
lse in the war against peach tree
Jorers, said C. H. Brannon, exten
;ion entomologist at State College,
This chlorine compound, some
times called "P. D. B.” for short
suffocates the borers with its pois
onoous fumes when it is appliec
properly to the treet roots, Bran
non stated.
In North Carolina, best result:
will be obtained by applying th<
P. D. B. between September 2J anc
October 10.
Old trees with large trunks re
quire about an ounce and a quar
ter of the chemical, while youngei
trees should receive smaller doses
as too heavy an application wil
damage their roots.
Half an ounce is enough for twr
or three year old trees, Brannor
stated. Four to five year old treei
will stand three-quarters of at
ounce. .Six year old trees may bi
given an ounce without danger.
First remove all grass and weed
from around the tree trunk, thei
break the crust of the soil. Scrap!
off any gum that may be found or
the tree bark.
Level off the soil so that it wil
be above the borer hole.
Place thee rystals in a rinj
around the tree, about an inch fron
the trunk, but be careful not t<
let any of them touch the tree
Then throw a few shovelfuls oi
earth over the crystals and pad
the earth into a smooth mound.
The gas given off by the crystal'
is heavier than air and will not ris<
to fumigate any borer holes abovi
the level at which the crystals ar<
placed, but it will permeate al
crevices below this level.

Skeptics who claim there’s noth
ing new under the sun fail to reck
on with the ingenuity of shoe de
signers. It won’t be long before
glass heels flash on the trim slippers
of modern Cinderellas. Made of
opaque glass, they come in lovely
jewel colors to harmonize with the
rich satins and brocades of the new
evening shoes. Next in the proces
sion of novelties is the aerated rub
ber heel, a model which makes it
literally possible to walk on air. It
has an air chamber in the back
which collapses when a step is
taken, thus throwing the weight of
the body toward the front of the
heel where many orthopedic ex
perts say it belongs.
And while we’re on the subject
of shoes, here’s some timely advice
from a well-known orthopedic sur
geon. "No one should continue to
wear a spike heel at all times,” he
declares. "A dress shoe or sitting
shoe is not a walking shoe. If ladies
must indulge their fancy for high
heels, they should take a brisk walk
daily in bare feet or at least in low
heeled shoes.”
According to a home economist,
most women pound their heels over
hard floors for the equivalent of
three to eight miles a day in the
performance of their household
tasks. If they wear spike heels, she
says, their resistance will have sunk
to zero by the time the dinner hour
approaches. Well-fitting shoes with!
comfortable built-up heels are rc-j
commended by this expert for,
women who must stand on their'
feet for lengthy periods at business,!
in the home, or when engaged in!
outdoor activities.

Luxurious bathers can now add
bath oil to their list of tub acces
sories. A few drops is all you need
to a tub. And a trick to using bath
oil is to drop a little into the tub
before you run the water, right un
der where the water first hits. The
force of the water from the faucet
as it strikes the oil breaks it up
nicely into utter and sweet diffu
sion.

Beauty specialists advise that it
may be harmful to try to remove
freckles. Prevent them by staying
out of the sun. But if they do ap
pear, here is a simple and harmless
homemade recipe of a Frenchwo
man that is well worth trying and
may make the freckles less con
spicuous: Beat the white of an egg
and the juice of one lemon together
in a mixing bowl. When the mix
ture is frothy add one cup of water
and one talbesjjoonful of powdered
sugar. Beat it again, then spread
over the freckled area and leave on
all night. Naturally, you should
cleanse your skin well before you
start.

When broiiling ham for breakfast
or any other meal spread it first
with prepared mustard. That gives
the finishing savory touch to this
favorite meat. To bake a slice of
ham trin off border of fat, chop the
fat and mix with brown sugar and
prepared mustard. Spread this on
ham arid bake half an hour.

Household Hint: Save orange
peels and make use of them. Put
them through a chopper and then
cover with sugar and they can be
used as flavoring and added touches
in salads, puddings and cakes—or
even on tea biscuits wbkn. the latter
