be pronounced is, that he has generally
kept his mouth closed some little evi

Who is he, and what claims has he

how such men permit themselves to be

"The editor of the Tarboro South
erner, in his paper of tho 2Gth iust.,
with the air of a man to the manor
born, and also of one who has perhaps
traveled outside of his native county,
makes the surprising assertion that
'nine-tenths of the immigrants who
come here are bankrupt in character
and pocket at home, have migrated
South for the express purpose of mend
ing their brokeu down fortunes,' &c.
lie also charges us with being a thor
oughgoing carpet-bagger. We are not
a proud or vain man, but if the writer
of that little, contemptible, short-sighted
slur upon immigrants, headed 'Carpet
bagism Defined,' will compare records
with us and show that he (a native
North Carolinian though he may be)
has done more for the State and people
than we have, or expendedhalf as much
money in improving the condition of
his fellow men as we havo, during our
eight years residence in th'13 State, we
will make him a handsome present.
lie evidently is of a jealous disposition.
His paper is the only one in tho South
that keeps the name of that unhung
traitor, JefTer.-on Davis, at ita head,
after that famous saying of Davis', 'I
am a Southern man, of Southern prins
ciples.' IIo wants Davis, and Davis
principles all around him, and he in
tends to guard them, for certainly no
Northern man will think of having
anything to do with a man or paper
that classes him as a broken down ad
venturer, and slanders nine out of ten
of his friends whom he is trying to get
interested aud to invest in the South.
We would advisa the gentleman (who
ever he may be) who wrote that 'Car
pet bngisra Defined,' to know who and
what he is writing about before he es
says to define carpet-bagism again."
Tho above extract is taken from a
"contempt-'a'-ble" Radical sheet pub
lished in the city of Newbern, and
known as tho Daily Times. It is really
" " .
so "contempt-'a'-ble" that we should
to notice it in any respect but
for the low-flung slur cast at the name

he had intimated that he wished to
converse with him in regard to the
politics of the county. That re.specta
tie citizen conversed with him fur a
few moments at the foot of the stairs,
and separating from Stephens he saw
him standing a short time afterwards
near the door of the grand jury room
in conversation with a colored man,
whom he did not know.
After night, Stephens failing to re
turn home, his wife become uneasy,
and sent up street to enquire concern
ing him. Between nine and ten o'.
clock at night, her uneasiness having
increased, she caused general enquiry
and search to made for him. especially
in the rooms of the Court House. Rut
ia the meantime, from an early hour
at night, a guard or wath of colored
persons had. hv whnsff n rpnrv J Irnnw.-

the late Clerk and Ma3tcr in Equity of

room, this key could not be found, nor
has it yet Veen found. Search was
made of all the other rooms, and of
this too, bo far as it could be done by
booking in through the windows ; and
nothing ot Stephens was discovered.
So the night passed leaving all in sus-
pense in regard to him. In the mean-
time, the watch of which T havo
1 1
spoken was kept up. Next morning
at an early hour, I do not know the
exact time, perhaps about 5 o'clock, a
colored man went to one of the win
dows of tho room referred to, and look
; : iii ,i . -
s amiouucuu mat no saw tne dead

lens in there. The door
was forced open by instruments and
behold! there was his body with a rope
tightly drawn around his neck and two
stabs upon his person, one in or near
the throat, the other immediately over
the region of the heart. There was
but little appearance of blood on the
floor. A pocket knife was found lying
near the body, but whether it was his
own or not, is, I think, not certainly
known. His pocket book was fouud
on his person .but on being opened it
wa-s found as I learn, to contain no
money. He was in the habit of wear
ing pistols none were fouud on him.
A jury of inquest was promptly
summoned consisting of seven white
and five colored men. They have
been diligently making inquisition ever
since an early hour on Sunday morn
ing last, but not the slightest trace of
a perpetrator of the deed has yet been
discovered by any evidenceyct laid &es
fore the jury.
There were some strangers seen
about the villageyalthough as there
was a public meeting on ttat day, this
was to be expected. On such occasion
generally, there are persons from ad
joining counties ; on this occasion
there were fewer than usual. It was
immediately suggested, on discovering
the dead body, that he had probably
been the victim of a well krown secret
association. Up tQ this time there is
not a slightest proof of this the jury
of inquest have noK been discharged,
and it is hoped thafethey nny yet be
able to discover something which will
lead to the detection of the jerpetrator
of the deed.
Stephens had become odious with
many of his own party, and smne prom
inent colored men Biad been endeavor
ing to enter into arf . arrangement with
the Conservatives to have him defeated.
He had also rendered himself intensely
odious to all good men amongthe white
population by his Mqiposcd cmueetion
with the recent barn burning! in the
county but I am coi fident from what
has transpired since his deatl that his
murder is quite as likely to lavo been
the act of his own political pa-tizans as
of any other men. I forbeir to be
more specific in my state men , s, as the
coroner's investigation is stillpending.
One thing I will add ; I havo no be
lief that he was killed by the Ku-KIuz,
nor has any other person wira whom
I have conversed. I omitted to men
tion, in the proper place, that the door
of the room in which his tody was
found, was found to be bolted on the
insido as well as locked. The "perpe
trators must have gone out at one of
tho windows, and these windows face
a house occupied by colored people
and situated very near to the Court
House. No white man could have
gono in or out of one of these windows
without being exposed to the almost
certain detection of th(S occupants of
the said house. It if , rumored, and
the rumor is believed! that he was
warned on Saturday horning ly Uco
colored persons to bewlre, that his life
was in danger.
It seems impossible that ha could
have been taken int i the room, in
w hich his body was foind, by violence,
without giviDg rise to in outcry on his
part that would certafaly havo been
heard in or near the 1ourt House.
He must have been decoyed into that
room, if he was murdered there, and
is it probable that any cf his embitter
ed enemies could have.so decoyed him?
Would he not have suspected them,
and have refused togowr.h (hem into
such a place of privacy ?

human stomach is to the human system what
that elastic piece oi metal is to a enronomotor.
It influences tho action of the other organs,
and controls, to a certain extent, the whole

the arcut tioiirishiiuj onaii whose office it is to

its duty. It requires renovating and regula

Stomach Bitters may be truly said to bo the one
tiring needful. The broken main spring of a
watch may be replaced by a new one, but tho
stomach can only be repaired and strengthened,
and this is one of the objects of the famous
vegetable restorative which for eighteen years
has been waging a successful contest with dys
pepsia in ail clinuites. As a spoeilic for indi
gestion it stands alone. When tho resources
of tho pharmacopoeia, have been exhausted
without, at best, doing more than mitigating
the complaint, a course of this wholesome and
palatable, yet powerful, btoinaelue effects a
perfect ; ami" permanent cure. In all cases of
dyspepsia thij liver is more or less disordered,
and upon this important gland, as well as upon
tho stomach and bowels, tho Bitters act with
singular distinctness, regulating and reinvigor

on which bodily and mental health depend.
