A gentle man who has for several years been en gaged in the purchase of cotton and the procurement of bagging and ties gives us the following He.n of information that may prove a little bit of news to the parties most interested. He states that the planters of the county saved, or rather realized, a nett proit last year of sixty thousand dollars on their purchases of bagging and ties. In other words, that they sold with the cotton that amouut of bagging and ties more than they cost. It is very probable that the sum thus saved this year will not fall much below the figures of last season. This Is, by no means, an insignificant saving iu one county and should be some- wuat gratifying to those engaged in the cultivation of the crop. Dis'ORAf EKUL- He:etofore we have re frained from noticing in the Socthkrner a pi eminent negro politician of the coun ty, who, at the late State election, was elected to the House of Representatives fro' this county. This was done on purpose, as we did not intend to defile our columns with the name of a man bo utterly comtemptible aun low. But, there is a limit to all things, and the course of this man a few nights since was such that we feel it to be our duty in this public manner to give him a notifica tion that he must herefater be more cir cumpect in his bearing and language. On a certain night last week, instigated by his devilish propensities, be, in a pub lic place, applied the most approbrious ep- ihets to some of our most respectable and worthy young men, which has very natu rally excited amongst them feelings of the deepest indignation. It is foitunate, for h'm, that he made himself "scace" iinnie diately afterwards. "A word to the wise is sufficient." The largest assortment of Boots and Shoes for men, women and children at H. It will le seen by reference to the official vote of Edge combe, published elsewhere, that.the Re publican majority in the county is 2,215; making a Democratic loss of 237. These are aparently large figures, but it must be remembered that Edgecombe has a tre mendous negro vote, and, when compared with other counties, the loss is compara tively small. '' The Radicals did not poll their strength, as indicated by the August election, and, considering tn circufustances,it is remark able that we held Our own so well. Other Countfes. mnch smaller and better can vassed', and iu many instances thoroughly Democratic, lost from 400 to 600 each, while 'only about 200 of our people re mainea from the polls. Wc hope the-vote of Edgecombe in the State and Presidential elections 'will for ever silence tne cry made some tune ago that the County was doubtful. "People living in glass houses," &c. CAROLINA OUTLAWS. s One of t em Appears at Court, and Offers to Give Evidence- The Robesonian, of Wednesday, pubush ed at Lumberton. gives the latest intelli gence about the outlaws, as follows: We learn that Stephen Lowrey attended a Justice's Court at Union Chapel Chnrch, la Burnt Swamp Township, on Saturday last, and spent the day witnessing a trial in which two white citizens were concerned. There were. on the ground a largo number (50 or' 60, we learn,)" mulafloes apd half a dozen whites. Th oatlaw carried in his hauii a Spencer rifle and wore in his belt around him Beveral large pistols,-. We learn that he seemed entirely at ease, and during the progress of the trial manifested consider able interest in it. The trial was held la the Church, a close log building, from which it would have been impossible for him to es cape otherwise than by the door, yet he seemed to feel no apprehension,- and but for the fact that he constantly held his fine in his hands a stranger would not have seen anything in his manner to betray the pecu liar relation in which he stood to society. After the trial was over the outlaw invited some members of the bar and others who were present to join him in a glass of sweet cider, there -being a barrel on the ground. Subsequently he approached Col. "W. Foster French, of this town, who was present as at. torney for one of the parties to the trial, and requested private interview. The Colonel stepped a few paces aside with him, when the outlaw proposed to buy a smull tract of laud belonging to Col. French which lies in the ShufHetown region. The Colonel po litely informed him that he could have no transaction with an outlaw, when Stephen replkd very civilly that he suspected such to be the case, but thought there would be no harm in making the proposal. He was ready, he said, to pay cash for it, if he could have the privilege of buying. Thus the in terview ended. During the whole day the bold outlaw conducted himself, we ure informed, with the utmost freedom, but w ith marked civ ility aud politeness. Being asked whether ILnry Berry Lowrey was dead, he replied, that he was not "about here" that he (Stephen) had travelled over "these woods" pretty thoroughly within the past six months, and if Henry Berry were still pe rambulating 'hem he would ceitaiuly have met hiin. Before the trial commenced Stephen sug gested to the attoi ney fur the plaintiff that ho (Stephen) could be of service to his client, if permitted to testify , in his behalf. To this the attorney replied that Le would not be a competent witness when the out law u.uttered "I will. hi a witness against him soma d.iv." The Raleigh Hews gives the following lacts in regara to a dastardly outrage upon a Democratic col- ired man in Granville county. "A colored man by the name of John Davis voted for the Greeley electors. Soon after voting, he Davis, was taken by a negro and carried about two bundl e 1 yards from the house where the polls were kept, and was stripped, tied to a tree, and most cruelly whipped for voting against the Radical party. At the time the whipping was going on a circle of ne groes about fifty in number were around the poor creature, and appeared as if they were encouraging the wicked wretch who was then applying the lash to Davis with a heavy hand. And strange to say, there were two magistrates and two constables at the place whe refused to bring the of - fenders to justice, and. one of the Justices was heard to say, that he did not care if they killed Davis, and in that case he would not interfere in the matter." Watch out Farmers of Edgecombe. Mr. J. R. Moore, a Nash Couuty man states that he made this year seventy-five bales of cotton on seveuty-five acres of land. It will never do for Nash to be bragging in such a manner. Can't Edgecombe do oetter even than that ? Dr Mason of the Episcopal chnrch officiating The Temperance Question Key Note from Brother Mills - We copy the following forcible and racy article from the Biblical Recorder and cauuot refrain from folly endorsing its views. Pass the hat around among the church members. Temperance. Theo. N. Ramsay, Esq., the State lecturer for the Order of "Good Templars," telegraphs as follows: 1 'Eastern Carolina safe on the Temper C j question. Camden, Currituck and Pasquotank reconstructed. Dowu with the liquor traffic." Daily News. So Eastern Carolina was not "safe on the Temperance question' till the recent advent ! Alas for Eastern Carolina ! But "Camden, Currituck and Pasquotank" have been "reconstractcd," aud their new refrain, is "Down with the liquor trafic" What a wonderful rvolutioii ! We teel it our duty to say that we consider that telegram a small piece of impudence. The people mentioned have been for many years a temperance people on christian principles. It was well to organize lodges of Good Templars, if the people so desired, but tha formation of temperance societies is one thing, and the reconstruction of the people is another. How many grog-shops have been closed? How many barrels of brandy have been poured out. Do the dozen bar-rooms in Elizabeth City sell any less liquor th an they sold before? But this style of writing and speaking does harm in this way. Pastors and church: members have been for niauy years faith fully fighting the battles of temperance. Now comes, a temperance lecturer. He says the Church, iu this department, is a failure, aud his organization Is a complete success. He proceeds to reconstruct the couutry. The churchcr retire from the field, and depend on a human organiza tion to do work which God has ass'gned to his own people. We rejoice in the good accomplished by temperance societies; but we object to their impudence in claiming to monopo lize this depart men I of labor, and we in sist that churches ins ead of relaxing, ought to redouble their efforts, when tem perance societies are most successful. A temperance pledge, without the restraints which religion throws arennd it, is nit worth the millionth part of a last year's bird's nest. Would a lying Turk or a heat lieu Chinaman regard a temperance pledge ! Churches, whose members wiake life-long vows of total alstiuence, oughi to s';e that these vows w sacredly kept, and should withdraw fellowship from all who disgrace themselves and iheir reli gion.
