ADVERTISE.- times are tbo very best for advertisers. What little is going on, they get; while others are | grumbling, they pay their way, and with a news j paper for a life-preserver, swim on the top of the > water, while others around are sinking. "The Union as it Was" jß®~And wto is it that doea not wish it was, "as it waif—-aa it was in its palmy days—its • days of Peace, proaperity and purity—as it was when handed down to us by the heroes and sages | of "the times that tried men'* earls" We trust j it may yet be so,—and that this Union mag pr \ r n I a "political indistructibility," for wa love our ; * country and had high hopes of a blight lulure for it, but we must confess, that around these hopes j new cluster dsikiy our fears. Humiliating as it | may be, we already see tbo firger of royal ridi cule pointed at ua—tie boasted excellency of our iniuiu.w—, „.,a nur capacity for self govennent, doubted and derided, —and wunero I pair of those who built their hopes on our exam- j pit. It wiil not be deemed disloyal or amiss we hope, if we should enquiro from whence comes tho •ante of this threatened downfall of this, "the best government tbe world ever saw,"—of a na tion, which, though but jet in her teens, defiod the world in arms or in arts. Can wo wonder or want for a reason when wc observe tho fanaticism which for long years has run rampsnt through the land, lias not the Spiritualism, the Fjurior ism, the Millerism, tho Mormsniam, the Free" loveiiro, the bigher-Iswism, and the Black P.rpub canism of "glorious New Eog'and," been enough to damn any nation! Again, wo have a cause in tho elevation, so common, of men to high positions, who reject the arguments addressed to rca;on and tho moral ua. tare, and only appeal to acll interest and blind passion in their political connexion with the peo pit. The question of slavery, all must admit, has bad a prominent part in producing the sad re sults we now witness. Political parties—the churob—kindly feeling, haro all in turn been com pelled to auceomb to the intense sectional antago nism which the agitation of this question baa pro duced, and whose ultimate results no one msy predict. To whom is attributable the constant agitation of this vexed question, it would be fully to debate, for it is as plain as the noon-day sun, to ati who hare not criminally olosed their eyes to facts, from whence came the contional cry of "agitate,! agitate!!" and from whence camo the prayers and pleadings that the subject might bo "left alone." The confident hope iong entertained by many that tbc agencies ol steam, the railway and tbc tilegraph, would so bind together tha Union in commercial interests as to render its separation an impossibility, appears to be doomed to dissp- I pointmcnt, if wo are to judge from the indications around us. Esch successive dny appears bnt to produce something calculated to widen the breach j between the two sections, and shorten the life of the nation. There was a time when an idea con- j trary to the perpetuity of the Union was held as a heresy to be crashed in its first inception in the j mird, bnt now it bis become an ordinary subject of public discussion and private reflection, aje t its very existence is even now staked upon the ! arbitrament of the sword. The Rc-arrcst of R. 11. Alvey, Esq., j About eighteen months ago we were pained to witness the arrest of our fellow citizen whose ' nime beads tbis article, and to see him condactsd, I under a strong military guard, ovsr tbe Franklin and Cumberland Valley Rail Roads to some secure military port, where he languished a prisoner for more than eight months, when finally he was re- ! leased. Ou Tuesday morning the same gentleman was again arrested and, we learn, hnrriecly taken over the came route to some unknown destination.— j But on tbe latter occasion be was not under tbe earn illance of a military guard, but was in charge of bia lair btide, a prisoner for life. Death of Rev. R. 11. Drain. All of our citizens wbo recollect tbe Rev. H. H. Drane, formerly Rector of St. John's Pro- j tcatant Episcopal Chnrch, of this place, will bear j with profound regret, ofbiadeatb, which occurred at Wilmington If. C., of Yellow fever. Tbe Rev. j Mr. D., removed from this place aome twenty , years since, to Wilmington, where he has eonttn-! sed to resida, we balieve, up to the time of bia death. THE ELECTIONS '•TII2 SOBER SECOND THOU3HT OF THE P2O - give, as we supposed wg would be able 10 do, tbe probable results of the elections held on Tuesday in New York, New Jereey, Mss •acbusetD, As. It will be seen tbat tte march ot eoneervatiam ie onward—that radicalism is on tbe wane— bUck Republicanism on its last leys. "Tbe cober second thought of the people" has come at last, and is again placing tbe reins of government in the hands of the Democratic party, tbe Sbritkera baring been "weighed in tbe bal ance and found wanting." Let tbe returns to far as we bare tbem, speak for themselves: NEW YORK. Actual returns from twenty-five counties ted the city of New York give Seymour a msjority of SOG'JO. The twenty-nine counties to hetr from will reduce the above to 9,500. It is so ae tiimittd by tbe Albany Argus. The Albaby Juuacal concedes theelection of Seymour. The Congressional delegation will stand 18 or 19 Democrats to 12 or 13 Republicans—a Demo cratic gain of S or 9 members. Tbe Democrats, it is more tban probable, will have a iu>j irity oa joint ballot in tbe Legislature, and tbus secure the election of a U. S. Senator in place of Ficslon Kng, Radical Republican. NEW JERSEY. Talker, Dem., is elected Govornor of New Jersey by lO.UOO msjority, a Democratic gaiu ol 19,000 over last Governor's vote. The Democrats lave gained one member of Congress, have s majority on join', ballot in the Legislature and wiil consequently 'have the U. S. Senator to be elected. DELAWARE. This State still holds to the Republican faith as is evidenced by the re election ot Fisher to Congress by a mrj o ity ol atunt 100. MASiAUHUrfEI'TS. This Slate which onto voted herself out of the Union, also siili joined to her idols. She has provtd thoroughly Radical, re-electing Andrews, Governor aDd a fail delegation to Congress.— This is, however, no Democratic loss. WISCONSIN. The returns from this State are very meagre, i bat denote that the State has been hotly contes ted by both parties. MISSOURI. | Returns only from St. Louis—but the indica | tions are iu favor of the lltdicai Republicans. ILLINOIS. Returns thus far indicate the election of six Democrats nd five Republican to Congress with two districts doubtful. MICHIGAN. Scattering returns indicate that the State has gone Republican by a majority not less than 5,000 KENTUCKY. Geo. M. Ocatman has been elected to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. S. Jackson.. How it took and how it didn't Take! rocep iou of our first number was of a character far exceeding our moat sanguine ex pectations. Indeed, such was the demand; that the supply struck off was scon exhausted, and ma ny persons to whom we had intended sending copies wers, much to our regret, neglected.— Since then the sturdy farmers of the county bare been falling into lino at the rate of a score a day, and with words of encouragement and flush purses urge us on in the Independent path we bad mark ed out to pursue. Already, can we assure our friends that tbo "Free I'reu," is not only an established, but a paying institution. Let the good work go gayly on—let our friends pass the paper round for lamination by tboir neighbor*— send in their names—in company with the cash, when cunresien'—and we will make the promised mprorcmcnt in the size and appearance of the j paper in due season. O; course our reception was not very flittering ' from those whose conception of the term Indc ! pendent wea so obfuscated as to enable them to •so and amell "Treason" in tho very idea. Some were amM u.. , itle #f the piper a , ! to get their pouting apparatus out of shape, and i yet exhibit fresh signs oi the malady, whenever ; our countenance to tbcm Is made eieiolo. To others—the class that think "John Brown's soul is marching on"—an obsolete document on the first page, styled the Constitution of the Uni ted States, was "gall and worm-wood." It con victed on eight, and cansed them to shriek dis mally. And others jet there were—place seekers —on whom the "home troths" contained in its columns operated worse than "doctor's stuff. " They writhed and squirmed—blatantly and blood ily talked—talked malignantly of mobs and other modern inventions not consistent with "law and Older." To tbcm. wc would ray: "waJein,"the guillotine's in working order, and we shall take a fiendish delight in touching the springs. Ilurglars and a Remedy, residence of Mr. Joseph Wagoner, a farmer near tbis place, was entered on Friday night last, and robbed of nearly four hundred dollars over one hundred of which was in gold and silver. A very nice haul considering the premi um now to be cbtained for the precious metals. The burglara esc ped witbont any clue to their detection that wo are aware of. Tbe residence of Mr. Harrison Ilsgerman, in i tho same n igl,bur hood, was also entered on the same evening, but no plunder was obtained. A trucked battery prepared in every house for the reception of prowlers, is the beat remedy wo ean suggest to the community. "A Fire in the Reart" iKMt.WiU be seen by reading the letter of Ex President Buchanan in another colum, that tbe unfortunate old vetiran, Oei\ Scott, hae again snbjectcd himself to a terrible "fire in the rear.'' The Oencjai should quit tbe pen, and stick to tbe sword, for in tbe profession of tbe latter ho is perhaps unrq railed, bnt when he takes np the former bo generally "put bis foot in it." 'S'V Disease and Death among the Horses. THJ~A disease called tbe Black tongue is. we understand, very prevalent at this time among tbe horses hereabouts, causing a large number or deaths. A gentleman who appears to be posted on tbe subject informs ns that a dscoction of white oak bark, Alum and Saltpeter, with which to swab the month, is a very good remedy. Provost Regulating Matters. John R. Murphy, at present Provost Marshall of this place, with tbe Tiew of maintain ing quiet and good order in tbe town and vicinity, has prohibited the aelling or giving away of in toxicatinh drinks, and declares that permitting tbe lounging of soldiers and officers about where liquora are told, wilt be deemed evidence of sale, and snbject tbe aetlor to arrest, and the liqnori to confisication. Hagcrstown Hospitals. Hospitals in and aronnd thia place are now occupied by aome six or eight hundred sick and wounded soldiers, whose removal here daring the last week, was rendered necessary by tbe for ward movement of the Army of tbe Potomac.— Tbey are being, we understand, well cared for by the Ladies of the town. pc®~Trn valor is fire—boasting, is imeke.
