Captain Gaillard was In his seventy
fifth year He is survived by a widow
Captain Gaillard removed to this neigh ¬
borhood from South Carolina after the

Hon W V W Boyce who was dne of the
Representatives of South Carolina in

Mrs Martha Jenkins nee Arnold an
aged Alexandria lady well known and
respected died this morning 1 at an ad ¬
vanced age of seventyfive seventy five years at her
C Crooms rooms In the old Ramsay Ram5a house Her
first husband was William Jenkins a
soldier of the Mexican war and after
his death she became the wife of B H
Jenkins who died not long since
I Joseph Roberts died at the Alexandria
r Hospital of pneumonia this moining
Mr Roberts was mysteriously shot on
Christmas Day at the corner of Henry
and Duke streets and andno no one has yet
found out who his assailant was

present time is very unpopular Brok ¬
ers who are not altogether bullish and
who criticise the themarltet market on one ground
or another another always add But I wouldnt
sell them short The relative scarcity of
stocksreal stocks real stocks slockseither either on the ad ¬
vances or on price recessions Is calcu ¬
lated to make a short position on the
market feel very uncomfortable
There Is probably a larger short inter ¬
est in the Steel stocks especially espe b lly the
common than Is indicated ndie 1ted in the mar ¬
let lcd The common stock has been fa ¬
vored in short selling se1Hngbecause because the short
does not have to pay dividends on it
