THE WASHINGTON TIMES, SUNDAY, MAY 19, 1012: I CfAPITAL CLERGY, 'AS 01 MAN 0 FEWER SALOONS 1A11 Denominations Indorse The Times' Campaign for ; Sane Regulation. (Continued from First Pago.) referred to the needed readjustment of excise conditions In the District and lauded The Times for Its attitude. "I am heartily In favor of tho fight for better excise laws," said Dr. Wood row, "half of tho people of tho District at least, do not, Indulge In liquors of tho Intoxicating class. ,1 am sum that the women and children .of tho city should be reckoned with. They.are hot drinkers of intoxicants. Take "them Into con- iBfdcratlon and you have only the men, many ot-'whom also decry the practice of drinking. -Would not '300 saloons, ono for every owdrlnkers; bo a conservative Iquotd fortfhc city? "I am In favor of any measure to re Iduco the number of saloons." ' CorreVAbWs, He Thinks. "The Jones-Works exolso bill cor rects many flagrant abuses," said tho "flev. Wilbur Vincent Mallalleu. pastor of Itho Union Methodist Episcopal Church. "While It Is not as, far reaching aB many of us might wish, It neverthe less is-aTmlghty step in the right direc tion, and I urge ppon every man In this congregation that.he write to mem bers of tho District Committee, press ling upon them tho fact that the best element t In-Washington is back of the 'measure',"" At the Metropolitan Baptist Church the pulpit was filled by the Kov. Wll .Jard. tfalght. of Elizabeth City. N. C. 'The nev-.Mr. Haight formerly lived in ."Washington, and In his sermon made Vn Indirect reference to the excise law. The pastor, the Rev. John " Compton Ball, was present. He heartily Indorsed the fight The Times Is making, die said, pnd on several occasions has preached on tho question of fewer licenses for ItV'ashlngton. Should Demand Law. Tho Uev. pr. Earle Wilfley. pastor of the Vermont Avenuo Christian Church, In his sermon at the morning Ben Ice, declared Washington peoplo .Should demand more restrictions. "Congress owes the District of Colum bia more consideration," he said. "If the excise law as proposed Is not too severe, then It should be passed. If It is too sereve. It should be modified. That there are too many saloons In Washington thecr Is no doubt, and church-coins nebple of the city should 3ump In the" fight to have tho number oecreasea. While the Ilev Joseph T. Kell, pastor of tho fourth presoytenan vjnurch, made no direct allusion to the excise law In his sermon he expressed himself to a reported as being decidedly In favor .of the proposed legislation. At tho regular meeting of tho membership of the church Thursday night Mr. Kelly spoko In favor of the now law, urging the men of tho churc.li to write Bersonal letters to the members of tho Ustrlct Commltteo In Congress,' asking that tho bill bo passed. "Capital's Standing Curse." "The standing curse to the Capital city Is her number of saloons," said tho Rev. J. H. Du.iham, pastor of tho West ern PrcsbytcerUnt Church. "By all means .let us swing every energy Into, the fight to suppress tho present method of excise management. Every saloon less Is' that much for the general good." Many members of tho Washington Heights Presbyterian Church signed a petition today favoring tho pasago of the bill. Similar securing of signatures was carried on last Sunday and a long list Is now ready to be shown tho com mittee. The pastor of the Washington Heights Church, the Rov. W. D. Moss, made no comment on the bill In his ser mon. FLORIDAREPUBLICANS . .COME. BACK TO LIFE Roosevelt Indorsed, Taft Con demned, and State Ticket Prepared. POLITICAL FOES AIT LAST DAY OF OHIO BATTLE Taft at Brother's Home in Cincinnati; Colonel "Vis iting Garfield. (Continued from First Pago.) velt .has reacted to the Injury of both, for the peoplo In Ohio, where the po litical and social ferment Is perhaps deeper and more widespread than Id any other State, and whero tho doings of tho Taft Administration have been followed with unwontedly close Interest, in JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 19. As a result of a -convention held here last night, at which whites and blacks from all'ovor'the State congregated, tho'R6 ptibllcan party of Florida was brought back to life. Strict Instructions were given the national delegates that ThcQ dor;e RoQgqyclt was tho choice of pro gressive Republicans. Resolutions were passed denouncing President Taffs office-holding contingent. Melville G. Gibbons, of Tampa, was made permanent chairman and Mayqr M. J. de Coursey secretary. 'It Is In tended to perfect a thorough organiza tion with view to capturing several X"on gresslonal districts. A, State ticket will be put In tho fto'd with, William C. Hodges, of Tallahasaer for governor. Roosevelt is assured of. recovering the vote of at least three-fourths of the delegation to Chicago. , Federation Meeting ' Postponed Until June There. Wasno meeting of tho Federa tion of Citizens' Association last night as scheduled, because of the lack of a. quorum at the hour set for the begln Ing of the business session of the-organization. It was the object of tho members of the association to meet at the Chamber of Commerce lost night and make certain amendments to the constitution of tho association. Tho meeting has been postponed until the regular June meeting of the organization. pathv between Taft and La Follettet the only thing that could bring them together in such a crisis as this Is a common hatred of Roosevelt. This view has been adopted In tho last forty eight hours by a number of peoplo that Id now fast increasing, and tho poli ticians think that If the fight Is plainly going to be very close, La Follotto will get a much lower vote than he might expect had he not made his campaign here a sort of auxiliary to that of Taft. In his speeches at Cleveland last night. Colonel Roosevelt talked to 30,000 people. He paid especial attention for the first time in this State, to the record of the Taft administration In the Bal llnger affair. He placed emphasis on the fact that Taft suppressed the Law ler memorandum In order to leave the public Ignorant of the fact that It had been drawn In Balllnger's own office, for the express purpose of whitewash ing hlm Effective Speech. This discussion was one of tho most effective he has used, because Ohio peo ple have been kept Intimately Informed on tho Ballfnger capo for tho last two years. The fact that former Secretary Garfield Is an Ohloan and that he was one of the leading figures In tho fight against Balllnger, had sufficed to keep the public concerned and Informed; and when Colonel Roosevelt denounced the course of the Administration, It was re ceived with the most violent demonstra tions of approval. In summing up this affair, Colonel Roosevelt concluded: "Tne records of the Presidency may Be searched in vain for another cne of this character. If Instead of being President of tho people, who was be traying the people, and who was then covering his betrayal by suppressing and altering the facts, Mr. Taft had been president of a bank and had acted to ward the stockholders and depositors as he acted toward tho people In this case, he would hayo been In Imminent danger of having the matter laid before the district attorney. air. itoosevelt ror tho first time took detailed cognizance of Taft's repeated criticism of Dan Hanna's suport of Roosevelt.- This he did by reading from tho j-ceords of the United States Court documents over tho signatures of At torney General Wlckcrsham and Inter state Commissioner Lane, In which It was clearly shown that while Hanrtn was lndcted upon a technical violation of the law, tho Indictment was dis missed on tho recommendation of tho Attorney General. The letter of Com missioner Lane was cited to prove that the technical violation was committed In an. effort to observe the spirit of the law, nhd that th6re was not the slight est moral delinquency on the part of Mr. Hnnna' in connection with It. In summing up his opinion of Taft's attitude In tlits case, the colonel said: i "What shall wo think of a President who in a public speech accuses another man of having been Indicted, but omits to mention that thclndlctment has been dismissed, on tho recommendation of that President's own Attorney General? Mr, Taft knows theso facts but has de liberately! kept them from the public." Workers Busy Today. Whllo the candidates nro resting to day, tho calculators are working hard from county and precinct leaders' re ports, and other testimony, In the ef fort to determine accurately what may bo expected to happen on Tuesday. The Roosevelt manager, Walter F. Browp, .claims that tho, colonol will Carry' 18 of tho 21 Congress districts, while tho claim of Chairman Loyland, of tho Taft committee, Is that Taft will get 14 of tho 21 and tho State conven tion. Although for'publlo consumption the Taft people allege he will carry all districts, the best political Judgment .Is. that Roosevelt will get at least fifteen of the 21 dlstrlcs. which will give him absolute control of ,the State convention Sm) assure the 8lx'd61egatcs at targe. tT88awatvorteV,teaWkenCebT nft rWrrVeU8ntafe8 "SffiSKB &&s &&&$ 3,100 votes being taken, and the re sults were: NORS m OF FIGHT ON BRAZIL COFFEE COMBINE Nebraska Progressive Is Credited With Being Nem esis of Alleged Trust. ; Mr. Beveridge, 2; no choice, Democrats-For Mr Harmon. 712: Mr. Wlleon. 442: Mr. '? With tho filing of a suit by the De partment of Justlco to break up tho International combine and confiscate Its holdings In this country. Congressman Qeorgo W. Norrls, tho Nebraska pro gressive, qualifies today as tno Nemesis of tho Coffee trust. , More than a year ago Mr. Norrls de livered a speech In the Houso In which ho denounced tho Brazilian valorisation scheme, because of which tho price of coffee has steadily advanced through out the world within tho past five years, At New York lato yesterday tho De partment of Justlco filed a suit against tho "commltteo or seven," which Is holding millions of bags of coffco off tho market. For tho past twelve months, It Is learned, Mr. NorrlB has been iri cor respondence with the Denartment of Justlco and with coffee dealers through out ine country, ile insisted tho depart ment bilng tho suit now filed, taking this unqualified stand In Ilia dealing With the department. "If thn Sherman law Is defective and you cannot reach tho Coffee trust under It, point out whcerln It Is defective and an effort will be made to amend It. Otherwise, bring suit." The department at last determined to proceed and the suit now filed Is per haps the most radical step taken In the trust-busting program of the De partment of Justice. Tho suit not only seeks Ito cnloln Herman Slelcken and others ot tho valorization committee from carrying out tho pact with the Brazilian government, but the Govern ment seeks to confiscate and sell, that tho price of coffco may be reduced, some 950,000 bags of coffee now held in New York. Under Brazil's valorization scheme, mude possible by governmental sanc tion and a loan of J'5,000.000, part of which was placed In Wall Street, more than four million bngs of coffee are now held off the market In this and Kuro nean countries. Practically the entire coffee output of Brazil which raises 75 per cent of tho entlro supply of the world Is under tho domination of this valorization committee, of which Mr. Siclckott Isthe American member. Mr. Slelcken recently testified before the House Money Trust Investigating Commltteo that Biazll took over Its coffeo .Industry "to prevent overpro duction, reduced prices and probable avi lutlo i." Borrowed $75,000,000. As pointed out In tho Government's suit, tho stato of San Paulo, backed by tho republic of "Brazil, borrowed 175,000,000 In 100S to corner tho country's coffco suppl), and to doto It out as tho com mittee of seven thought best. Of this amount $10,000,000 wan loaned by the National 'City Hank. J. P. Morgan & Co., and the First National Bank, of NewTfoik. J. Ijcniv Schroeder & Co., of Lpndou, handled tho entlro loan, ap portioning It among American, British, French and German banks. By means of this loan the government-owned trust has been doing bus! noRfl for llvn vnnrs. whllo Interest, com missions, export taxes, laws limiting the planting of coffco trees, and other things have caused tho price of coffee to mount steadily, and the valoriza tion commltteo has been dictator of tho market. 1 Moving to restrain tho International "conspirators' from further Interference with interstate and foreign commerce, and demanding tho confiscation and sale of 930,000 bags of coffee now "held" by the .New Yprk Dock Company, tho Government brings suit ugalnst Herman Slelcken, of New York; Baron Bruno Schroeder. of J.
