NEW TORK, May 29.--I merely tried to do my duty as I saw it; first, to my ship: secondly, to Buffering humanity, I claim no credit that is not due as mt)ch to each and every mombcr of the Carpathla's crew." StandiriB erect in the main dining room of the Cunard lino steamer Car pathla, Capt, A. H, Rostron, hero of the Titanic disaster, blushing like a school girl, modestly Insisted today that he had done nothing unusual in risking his vessel and the lives of passengers and crev in sending the Carpathia full speed through the ice fields to the rescue of the Titanic refugees huddled In tho lifeboats afloat In the open sea. His statement was made In response to a eulogistic speech by Frederick K. Stewart, of this city. In presenting to the captain a silver loving cup to com memorate the rescue, and to the officers and crew medals for the same purpose. The entire affair was unique In the history of this port. Entering the harbor, the Carpathia was saluted by every vessel she passed on the run up from tho channel lightship. At the pier a committee of Tllanlo survivors nnd invited guests boarded the vessel, and at their request Captain Rostron mustered th- entire crew, from dcclt hand to stoker, in the main saloon, and after somo eulogistic speeches every ono of tho vessel's company re ceived a medal. A loving- cup given Captain Rostron bore the following Inscription: "Presented to Capt. A. H. Rostron, R. D. R, N. R commander R. M. P Carpathia, In grateful recognition and appreciation of his heroic and efficient services in tho rescue of the survivors of the Titanic, April 15. 1912. and of the genarous and sympathetic treat ment lie accorded us on his ship. Without warning the big icservolr of the Ameri can Brasn Company gave way yester day afternoon, causing damage which will amount to more than 1150.000. The reservoir Is half a mile long, nbout MO feet tlde and forty to fifty feet deep. Tons of water rushed through the copper milt, endangering the lives o' hundiMs of workmen, who sought refuge on the machinery Joists The surging river was five feet deep and carried boxes of copper, casks.' carboys, gates, fences, and almost anything that weighed less than 500 pounds. The Boston Store had eight feet o' water in It, and the clerks nnd cus tomers rushed to the roof. Tho base ment Is i complete wreck. Four buildings belonging to the brass company were toppled over and the foundations of he main building' lnun-datt-d The main street Is strewn wi'h wreckage and three feet of gravel covers the street for half a mile.
