Pugh, o2 the Pollco .Court, would like to know. Also young "Wannall. On Thursday Wannall took Miss Qus elo Sprusser, of 619 iJllot street north' east, down to Chesapeake Beach. They returned home about 11 o'clock. Wan nall said good night and walked away to go to his home In O street north east When about half a block from the house a man, without a word of warning, slipped over three long Jabs to the nose, breaking four bones. The case was reported to the police. Sumner Torrey, an uncle of the girl, who lives at 619 Eliot street, was ar rested, but he says he Is Innocent. 'Wannell asserts Torrey was on tho veranda when he reached tho house, and that he Is certain Torrey Is the man who assaulted him. Miss Sprusser alleges that the man on the porch was "Mr. William Hefflnor." Eha said she had had a date with him that night at 8 o'clock, but had broken H to go with Wannell. Now, Assistant District Attorney S. McComas Hawken would like to know did "Mr. Hefflner" sit on the porch of the Torrey homo from 8 o'clock, the time of the engagement, until 11, when the girl and other fellow returned, simply to get a chance to whin the man iwho went to the beach with her. The case came up in Police Court to day. Miss Sprusser admits Bhc went to the beach with Wannell, but does mot know what transpired after he left her. She says her uncle was Sot on the veranda, but that "Mr. :efflner" was. Mrs. Torrey, however, testified that there was no one on the porch that she knew of; that they all were In bed. Judge Pugh continued the case until officers of the Ninth precinct can And "Mr. Hefflner." SCOUTMASTER LAUDS CAMP AT RIVER VIEW T. R. Pirtle Highly Commends Arrangements At Outing Place. A letter full of praise for the way the boys' camp at River View Is being con ducted, has been received by Superin tendent of Playgrounds Martin, from T. R. Pirtle, scoutmaster No. 10. Mr. Pirtle has Just returned from a visit to the camp and declares that he was "more than pleased" with the entire arrangement. "If It had been half as good," he writes, "I should have been satisfied." "There was no bad language," the letter sayB, "and it was a pleasure to Bee the boys enjoy the freedom of the camp, as the discipline was such that they did not feel It, and still were re strained from doing things that would not add to the benefits to be derived from camp life." Mr. Pirtle declares that visitors stand in astonishment at the apparent free dom of the boys and their happiness, as well as at the accommodations that have been provided for the youngsters. He says he had some trouble in getting the boys In his squad to take the out ing, but now there is not a one of them who Is not enthusiastic over It. WAKES UP TO FIND BURGLAR IN ROOM Dr. Shaffer Causes Arrest of Youth On housebreaking Charge. Accused of entering the home of Dr. W. E. Shaffer, 1709 H Btreet northwest, Samuel Carter, an eighteen-year-old col ored youth, of 2043 L street northwest, wa arrested this morning by Policemen Mundle and 'Stroman, of the Third pre cinct, on a charge of housebreaking. Awakened shortly before daybreak. Dr. Shaffer discovered a colored man in his bedroom. Jumping out of bed Dr. Shaffer said: "I'll get my gun." The colored man fled from the room, ran downstairs, and out tho front door. Investigation showed that the house had been entered by climbing on the roof of a one-story addition to tho rear of the house and forcing open a window. Dr. Shaffer reported the matter to tne police and the two policemen arrested Carter on description. Later Dr. Shaffer called at the station house and identified the prisoner. Prosecutor Heard Shot Fired in Grace Home ATLANTA, Ga. Aug. 9 Solicitor General Hugh M. Dorsey, who prosecuted Mrs. Daisy Grace on the charge of shooting bar husband, declared today that he heard a shot fired in the Grace home not later than 6 o'clock on Ihe morning of March 6 while lying abed In his home across the street. Mrs. Grace told the Jury which acquitted her that the shoot ing occurred after 11 o'clock in the morning. Mr. Dorsey said he did not go on the wit ness stand and tell of hearing the shot because eminent lawyers had ad vised him that Inasmuch as he was prosecuting Mre. Grace such a course would be unwise. Besides he could not twear that it was on the morning of March 6, although he is cortaln in his own mind that It was. Grace was brought to Atlanta today from his homo In Newman to undergo an X-ray examination. After examining the plates his physicians will decide whether to operate in the hope of re moving the bullet, which Is pressing against the spinal cord and causing paralysis from tne waist down. Veterans to Meet. LINCOLN, Neb., Aug. 9. Elaborate preparations are under way for the en tertainment of the delegates to the re union of the army of the Philippines, which Is to meet in this city next week. It will be the thirteenth annual reunion of the national organization, and the attendance will Include dele gate! from many States.
