NEW YOnKt April 8. A man about
twenty-three, lather under 11 vo feet
six Inches nnd wearing a daik gray
check suit, a cap and no ovcicoat, en
tered the jewelry store of Charles Cclht
mllo Geist and his wlfo were there,
Tho man asked to see somo watches,
and Deist put a tray holding eleven
watches, worth $300, on the ounter,
Tho visitor picked out one valued at $12
and then begun to haggle about the
pi Ice.
Tho man suddenly ordered Gclst to
move to the rear of the storo and to
hold up his hands, and an Gclst did not
obey at once ho produced a revolver.
Geist then obeyed and tho man fired
two shots, both of which wont v. lid.
Geist droped down behind his counter
and, reaching underneath a showcase,
grabbed the man's logs, and tho thief
fired a third shot, aiming undor the
counter.
Mrs. Geist started to scream nnd tho
mon darted out of thq store, leaving
tho watches behind. Gclst followed,
blowing a police whistle. Tho man first
started north, but seeing a policeman
turned and ran west on Eighty-seventh
street, and Into tho basement of an
apattment house. The reserves of the
100th street police station surrounded
the block and searched the houses, but
failed to find the man.
