Si THE WASHINGTON TIMES. THURSDAY. APRIL 8, 1915. THE BEST Photoplay Department in WASHINGTON Fostering Spirit of Antagonism Toward Stage Will Not Help Films .Ti-erc seems to be a gcnoial mis understanding among the exhibitors of motion pictures as to the attitude they should adopt toward -the lsglt imate theater, and this mlsundor (anding Is leading to a widening or the breach between two Industries that should develop side by Bids. ,8ome time ago attention was called to the fact that prominent theatri cal managers were seriously consid ering the necessity of Inserting in the contracts they have with their actors a clauso prohibiting the ac tors appearing In motion pictures during the lilotlme of the contract. The cause for this Is found In the manner In which exhibitors ato util izing flints with famous actois as stars for advertising pin poses. There Is really no need for this. . TJlo stage and the film both have their missions to pjrform. It Is true that the one frequently over laps the other. But there Is no lea son why they should not oarrv on their work without Interfering with imic anothar. The film s especially adapted to do one thing and tho stage another. There Isn't any way the two conflict if they ate pioperly managed. But there seems to ha a deslio on the pait 01" some of the people of the stage, as well ns some of the people In the motion plctura busi ness, to bring about an antagonism which cannot but rventiinllv work out to the detriment of both. The motion picture editor of the Hia niatlc Mirror speaks rather plainly on this subject in the currant lsue of tint periodical. Itls comment H so timely ami po just that it is worth while to icpublish it foi tho benefit of motion nieture patrons: "Motion picture exhibitors who de light 'ii advertising. "Why pay JJ to see So-and-so, when ou can see her here for 10 cents" ate not aiding the motion pkturc any by the practice. "Thev aic creating an ill-will on the part o' the llicattle.il producers and managers that will find expres sion in a variety of forms, and very llkelv at times when friendly support Is more needed by the motion plctute than vengeful spite, l'urthei than that, this form of competition can not be expected to gain the good will of the stage stars who are mention ed. "This practice Is becoming Increas ingly popular with picture exhibitors. The manager of a theatrical attrac tion with a star who has recently appeared on the screen finds soon after he leave New Yark that his every stop is played In opposition to a feature plctuio that is using the logan already mentioned. . "It may bo good business, but It doesn't make frlonds. At its best the result achieved is only of tomporaiy benefit. It will be admitted that the theatrical Interests have ncvor been overklnd in their consideration of tho picture in the past, bnt'that phase Is oast. "And in the day that Is coming the battles of the stage and screen will be. the same, and harmony will not be hastened by competition built on sharp practices." Chinese Thought First Motion Pictures Ghosts According to a letter received by ffhomas II. Inco from a missionary, re cently, and published In the Photoplay Magazine, tho llrst display of moving pictures In the province of Szcehuen, China, 2,000 milc3 up the Yang-Tse, caused a mob dlstuibance of alarming proportions. When tho bodiless, ct vigorous shadows began to move silently acuws tho screen in the visible but Imma terial simulation of life murmurs arose, noon increasing to shouts and uproar, that foreign devils had possessed "the locality, and were in league with the cplrits of the dead. Actual destruction and perhaps blood Hhed was prevented only by the clubbed guns of tho native soldier. Later, when tho pictures were explained, thu natives becamo ardent fans. The first feature film shown In Szechuen were Ince pictures. These cuibcd tho out burst of superstitious lage. TODAY'S BEST FILMS By GARDNER MACK. Sirs.
