THE WASHINGTON TIMES,1 SUNDAY,. AUGTJSJ 8, 1915, 15 Jean Eliot's Letter. (Continued from Tenth Pa.) vllle, which they occupy at least every week-end during: the year, to that Dick can retain his vote in Maryland. Laurence Benet has Just returned to Paris from the front, where he visited the Held hospital In which ho Is so In terested and for which he' raised the funds, about $30,000, when he and Mrs. Benot were In this country In the spring. It ,ls the most complete thing of. its kind In Europe, so I am told. It has the most modern and complete sup ply of everything necessary for tending 'the sick and wounded and Is always close to the firing line. The main body of this hospital Is a very larjre tent, which can be erected and fully prepared for occupancy In sixteen minutes, and can be taken down and packed ready to be moved in about six minutes. - Warm was the welcome which greet ed Charles P. Nelll and his wife when they returned to Cleveland Park to live after about a year's absence, during which time .they made New Yk their home. Mrs. Nelll disliked living in New York m very much and longed so for her old home town, with its associations, that they made every effort to return here. Mr. Nelll Is still connected with some railroads, and has his office In the Woodward building. They were not abl to get possession of their home In Cleveland Park, but have a very pretty home near by on the same street1. The Charles R. Crane family Is spending the summer at Wood's Hole, on the Massachusetts north shore. I believe Mr. Crane recently became a cttlien of New York, because the taxa tion laws of Illinois would have confis cated most of the mlUlons with which he- Is anxious to carry on his charac teristic set of philanthropies. Anyhow, Washington has had these Interesting people with It a good deal In the last couple of years, and likes them. They are expected to be back here next win ter. The Crane millions were made by the general capability of the family, on the foundation laldny Richard T. Crane. In the plumbing supply business In Chi cago. Trie old gentleman had a pro found distaste for colleges, which he thought wore bad for young men; so he gave his sons excellent educations. I don't know a man with a bigger and broader store of generally useful and Interesting Information than that pos sessed by Charles Crane. There were no drones In the Crane hive; the sons learned business as well . as other things. It happened that the particular no tions of the elder Crane about making his fortune useful to the world, were fully understood and shared by Charles R. Crane; so the latter was made, at his father's death, a sort of trustee, charged with using the money In the way the founder of the house would nave wianoa. These Crane Ideas of philanthropy are unique; they embrace everything from profit-sharing by the employes of the Crane company, up to financing presidential campafgns and inspiring liberal political Ideas In Eu rope. - " Of course, you recollect the funny thing that happened when the Senate investigated campaign funds, after the 1912 campaign. There had been two candidates for Presidential nominations in that year that bad mustered unex pected financial strength; that of La Follette for the Republican, and that of Wilson for the Democratic nomina tion. It was reported that Mr. Crane had had a good deal to do with both cases, and he was summoned before the committee. To everybody's astonish ment, he admitted having given about ttO.OOQ each to La Follette's and Wil son's funds. "What do you think," asked a mem ber of the committee rather severely, "of tho propriety of a man contribut ing to the funds of two parties' candi dates?" "Well," replied Mr. Crane, very coolly, "I figured that If I picked one winner in two guesses I would be do ing pretty well." "Suppose they had both been nomi nated?" was the next poser. "In that case, both being the kind of men I favor, I could have gone fishing till after election." It's worth while to mention that when Mr. Crane was selected as ambassador to China, and started for the East, only to be recalled, ho firmly believed that China's independence was likely to be sacrificed to Japan's ambitions- That having now happened, I rather assume that Mr. Crane has the feeling of a reasonably vindicated person. $ The "three wise men of Lenox" Vera all at the luncheon, which Mr. and Mrs. Glraud Foster gave at the Bellefontalne. in Lcnx, last week, and nowhere can be found more vivacious dinner part ners. Tho oldest of the group, Rear Admiral John II. Upshur, who Is approaching the age of ninety-two, also enjoys the distinction of being the oldest living graduate of the United States Naval Academy, belonging to the class of '41. Joseph II. Choate has reached the age of eighty-three, and Chauncey M. De ptw, the baby of the group, 18 only eighty-one. The admiral could pass easily for six ty, but is not quite so vigorous as the ex-Senator, who takes long walks about Lnox every day and is intenrcly inter ested In all sports and affairs of the community. Mr. Choato no longer walks about Stockbrldge, where he re sides, for "he has acquired tho automo bile habit. However, he Is Interested in all affairs of the day, especially In tho European conflict, because of his , wide diplomatic experience. But flow ers are his particular hobby JuBt now, and many vaileties grow in profusion at his country place. Plantation, as he has named it, on Field Hill. Talking of flowers makes me long to get out to the country, where cery thlng Is looking so fresh and green tftcr the many rains of tho week, so I think that I shall Indulge tho fancy Mop chatting with you, and depart for tho woods and fields. I will write soon again, but hope to hear from you In the meantime. As over, JEAN ELIOT. She's One Girl in 66. LYERLY. da.. Aug. 8.
