A Low Estimate.
Probably thla la an exceedingly low
estimate. Some eatlmatea place the an
nual amount at $15,000,000. This amount
tepreaonta about 100,000 Bpurned sky
Pieces, at least: nor does It take Into ac
count caps and other substitutes for
hats.
The average price paid for hata la be
lieved to be about $3. but that gives no
Idea of how extravagant soma men can
be on their hats. These include hard
and soft felts, silk hata. straws of every
kind, Including Panamas. There arc
men who order apeclally made Pana
maa, as many as half a dozen at a
time, to cost $150 each. Others can get
a modeat straw for S5 cents, and from
that up. Very good Panamas may be
had, it la stated, for $76, and soma as
law aa $4.
When it cornea to soft felt hats, $20
will buy the best, and for hard felt. $S,
while $10 will aecure tho beat French
Imported silk, high hat.
When a woman buya a new hat she
has it sent home In an elaborate box
covered with roaea Hko the old-fashioned
chintz or wallpaper patterns. It
fclves it a Parisian atmospnerc. even if
the creation never saw Paris, but when
k man buya a new hat he usually tells
ihe hatter to "chuck" the old one.
Sometimes, very seldom, ho has It sent
home. Intending to give It to the man
who cuts the lawn and taken out the
nshes. and then he forgets all about It,
and his wife gives It to the rubbish
man or the Salvation Army man at the
ilrst call.
As for the "cast-offs" that are "chuck
ed" by the hatter, the second-hand man
cornea around and takes them away.
He refurbishes the ones worth while,
and sella them at any price; the others
re stripped of the bands and bindings
and leather sweatbands for the ragbag,
and the remainder goes to the dump.
