I It was In this building that Mabel Normand, Ford Sterling, Kred Mace, and Alice Davenport made the first Keystone comedy under Bennett's di rection as an experiment. Bennett wrote the plays, when they had one, worked out the plots for the scenery, etc., hunted the locations, and more often than not, played the leading part while directing the production of the films. Alice DaVenport tells entertaining ly of the early struggles. Likewise ' she gives away a lot of Interesting thlngB about how the original Key stone comedies were made. Some of 'em looked it. But she tells it. "Y.ou know we had one automobile," Miss Davenport relates, "and by the time we had Mr. Bennett, the camera- man. Fred Mace, Mabel Normand, and Ford Sterling In It, there was never any room for me. I have rid den home In the old days from lo cations on the street cars, and then vowed I never would work for Mack Bennett ngaln. It happened, when I joined Mr. 8ennett, that I had a couple of horses; so finally I began to drive to locations. Then Mabel Insisted that I have a place In the auto, and after that It was different. Only One Dressing Room. This little green bulldlngorshant'y or whatever you want to call It, was ' our dressing room. Mabel had ono corner, and the rest of the women dtfssed where we could find the room. When Mabel was ready and wanted to come out, we all had to go out so she could have a passage to the door. ... "Stories? We never had any. Mr Bennett would tell us all to meet nt some location at 8 o'clock the -ext morning. When we got there hla first question was usually, 'Wnnt Mini! we dor I can see him now, as lie ran his' hands through his hair, while we stood about and waited for him. Then hla face would brighten, the smjle we all loved woilld come, and we all knew ho nad the story part solved. " 'Now, Mabel, you are the rich hriress,' he would begin. 'Kred. you are the favored sweetheart; Ford, you are the heavy: Davy, you play the mother, and I'll be the awkward lever.' "Then wo would begin; , and whether or not the old one-reelers had the punch as well as the laugh In them. I'll leave to those who used to enjoy the seeing almost as much cs we did the making."
